Skynyrd and NASCAR and Zakk Wylde and Mojo Nixon and James Van Eaton

According to a book I just snagged from the libarry, Ronnie Van Skynryd once opened for Black Sabbath and tried to kill his own guitarist while Sabbath guitarist ZAKK WYLDE looked on in horror. Yes you read that correctly.  Also I found out today that Mojo Nixon died on a day not far from the day the drummer he portrayed in "Great Balls of Fire" also died. Sounds like a good reason to go back to the earliest episodes of this podcast and relive my "Great Balls of Fire" review with copious amounts of Nick Toshces history of Jerry Lee, eh? What ELSE you got going on, anyway? CHRIST!  Anyone who listens to this episode tacitly endorses my purchase of a $60 3-channel mixer pedal I used to record some music with over the weekend.  The old but still active Rock History bonus feed here https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock Choose your preferred method of supporting the show for no money or maybe some money: PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/whatsamatta Shirt designs with defeatist messaging delivered via bright colors and childish graphics: https://www.bonfire.com/store/justtheworstshirtsever/ Subscribe to me on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV4Up7xGgjioEC07bjwu4mQ Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justtheworstever/ Send me an email with show suggestions: Justtheworstever@gmail.com Suicide Prevention, Text/Call: 988 https://afsp.org/ National Sexual Assault Hotline 1-800-656-4673 https://www.rainn.org/resources

You Might Also Like: Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang

Introducing "The Mayor" (w/ Laura Dern) from Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. Follow the show: Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang Um, is this thing on? Because a pink corduroy-clad Laura Dern bursts like the sun into the Las Cultch studio to speak with Matt & Bowen at length and... that's OUR world! That's the world that WE're livin' in. Dern whips out a Reese impression, discusses channeling anger better than anyone in the biz, talks creating Amy Jellicoe alongside Mike White in Enlightened, and gets into both the comedic and dramatic brutality of Big Little Lies. Also, defining wonder whilst looking up at CGI Brachiosaurii, starring as Ellen's gay love interest in The Puppy Episode of her sitcom, and even more on Jeff Goldblum's chest, if you can believe it. All this, growing up in Hollywood in a different era, reflections on the current status of the entertainment industry, going punk rock at 12 years old, David Lynch as niche yet mainstream culture, and Laura's real life interaction with a Real Housewife. See one of Laura's thousands of current projects (Is This Thing On?, Jay Kelly, Palm Royale on Apple TV+), as well as her millions of indelible ones you probably already love. I SAID THANK YOU! "Raging Angels" (1995) | Sean Patrick Flannery, Michael Pare, Diane Ladd, Mone Mazure, Alan Smithee

Hiya Hiya Hiya! We're back with a new film commentary, just the same kinda thing that started this whole podcast, Me and my pal Dan Teisan reacting in real time to a rock n' roll film from the mid 1990s. I was originally clued into the existence of this movie on either reddit or facebook in an "Old newspaper ads for films" group(because my life is a non stop action sensation of sensational action and adventurous sexual encounterings with wild people I'm constantly encountering and adventuring all up and over). And I have to say I was shocked that I'd never heard of this film made with my dude from Eddie and the Cruisers and one of the Boondock Saints and Diane Ladd so what's the deal here? Oh wait, who's on the soundtrack...STRYPER? Oh THAT's why. It's a film about mid 90s L.A. rock and somehow there's STRYPER songs in it? Well then it's a Christian film isn't it? Yep, it is.  The source we watched: https://archive.org/details/raging-angels_202312 Official website: https://millennium-media.net/mf-films/raging-angels/ Currently not-updated but still open to download bonus feed here https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock Choose your preferred method of supporting the show for no money or maybe some money: PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/whatsamatta Shirt designs with defeatist messaging delivered via bright colors and childish graphics: https://www.bonfire.com/store/justtheworstshirtsever/ Subscribe to me on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV4Up7xGgjioEC07bjwu4mQ Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justtheworstever/ Send me an email with show suggestions: Justtheworstever@gmail.com Suicide Prevention, Text/Call: 988 https://afsp.org/ National Sexual Assault Hotline 1-800-656-4673 https://www.rainn.org/resources

#3 on White Zombie (1932) AND WHITE ZOMBIE: Sean Yseult, Rob Zombie, Jay Yuenger, Ivan DePrume

Today is the IVAN DEPRUME INTERVIEW EPISODE! WOOOO! Also featuring more retrospective on the 1932 White Zombie film and narratives provided by Rob Zombie, Sean Yseult and Jay Yuenger from old interviews and blogs and books. The fine people at Radish Mattress and I will cover, among other topics: Ivan's upbringing in Brooklyn, his drum heros, and how he fit into the band over the years Rebuilding the engine on the White Zombie van for their early tours The elements of his 1992 drum kit that he still owns and uses in his recent projects How his mother got to America to escape Nazi occupation and death camps in Ukraine and Poland The Boundless Joy album and tour last year His best times in the gym with Rob Zombie His impression of every White Zombie guitarist over the years His view of Sean and Rob's separation and how it led to the splintering of the band's family vibe How he ate on the first European tour after blowing all his per diem money on a bitchin pair of leather pants The scary encounters on the road to places like revolution-wracked Yugoslavia and the Berlin Wall when it was torn down The bogus story Rob made up about why Ivan left White Zombie and the audio of Rob making b******t up onstage on Phil's first night behind the kit Ivan's views on how to best live life and take care of the people and communities around us My breakdown of Victor Halperin's techniques in the film "White Zombie" and the way the movie made me feel all these years after first seeing it in 1996 An exploration of Jay Yuenger's studio notes on "La Sexorcisto" and "Astro Creep" including the Phaser trick on "Blur the Technicolor" A dip back into Rob Zombie's history starting after his "PeeWee's Playhouse" experience and the indie NYC noise band scene White Zombie was entrenched in at the time. Also his time doing layout and typesetting for little known porno mags A wrap up of Sean Yseult's narrative on her years in the band and the noble modesty she displays by not using it to air any dirty laundry and simply highlight all the fun times and great people she experienced when the band got big. I mean, lots of other people would make an entire book about what it was like in the 80s and 90s if they were involved romantically with Rob Zombie, Dave Wyndorf and Al Jourgensen, right? But instead you get drawings and handwritten sheet music and cool electric basses and homemade costumes and cocktail party themes. And through it all there's plenty of helpful input from our sponsor representative brand officer CEO of Radish Mattress/Bootleg Ayhueasca of Canton, Ohio Inc. We praise and thank them for their partnership, and all heads must bow and each tongue shall confess and every knee shall bend for Radish Mattress. From the Patreon collection #3

From time to time, I will populate the main feed with a Patreon episode that's at least a year old so casual listeners might get a taste of all the extra scholarship that does occur, but lands nowhere near a published episode:  Original description for this episode:  Shaboom! Two hours of hotness for you today in the wake of my recent 3-parter on The Crow via the main feed. This was a nice slice of all-over-the-place pie, as the whole Patreon endeavor will surely continue to be.  So Today we gots: A quick look at a (post)90s rock book A Spin Reader's Poll Go Head in the Rain  Sun Records stories - Roscoe Jordan on Ike Turner, Then Nick Tosches on Jackie Brentston, Two onstage deaths in Rock Gilbert on where the love grows The history of Altamont continued, featuring Monterey Pop and Bill Graham + the establishment of both Fillmores East and West  Monthly exclusive Rock History bonus feed here https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock Choose your preferred method of supporting the show for no money or maybe some money: PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/whatsamatta Shirt designs with defeatist messaging delivered via bright colors and childish graphics: https://www.bonfire.com/store/justtheworstshirtsever/ Subscribe to me on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV4Up7xGgjioEC07bjwu4mQ Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justtheworstever/ Send me an email with show suggestions: Justtheworstever@gmail.com Suicide Prevention, Text/Call: 988 https://afsp.org/ National Sexual Assault Hotline 1-800-656-4673 https://www.rainn.org/resources

La Bamba! (1987) #2 | Ritchie Valens & Luis Valdez

Today we finish up Ritchie's story with some more background on the filmmaker and the movie I've come to love even more and apparently get goddamn defensive about. Reviewing the legacy of the film via a look back with Valdez and Lou Diamond Phillips TV Tropes about "La Bamba!"  My takeaways about the making of the film in 3 parts A look back at Luis Valdez's career and activism featuring a note about his cousin ("that vato?") Caesar Chavez and the work of Teatro Campesino  A brief look at the historical significance of American Pauchocos with a detour into some James Ellroy because I wanted to and it's my show, dammit More of Ritchie Valens' life story and rock n' roll legacy continued from last episode  Me getting REAL cranky about a douchey Pitchfork article I read while conducting research for this one An update on the show's ongoing relationship with Radish Mattress, Inc   Monthly exclusive Rock History bonus feed here https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock Choose your preferred method of supporting the show for no money or maybe some money: PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/whatsamatta Shirt designs with defeatist messaging delivered via bright colors and childish graphics: https://www.bonfire.com/store/justtheworstshirtsever/ Subscribe to me on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV4Up7xGgjioEC07bjwu4mQ Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justtheworstever/ Send me an email with show suggestions: Justtheworstever@gmail.com Suicide Prevention, Text/Call: 988 https://afsp.org/ National Sexual Assault Hotline 1-800-656-4673 https://www.rainn.org/resources
