    275 - Please Help Her

Romans 8:26-27 (NASB) In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. When I looked for an illustration of the word “intercedes” in verse 26, I found this sentence as part of an example (I’ll share the rest in the episode): “Please help her. She doesn’t even know how to explain what she’s feeling.”  This painted a funny and all-too-realistic image in my mind, which helped me in real time.  I will also read Romans 8:26-39, where we are reminded that He intercedes for us, He is for us, and nothing—not suffering, hardship, fear, nor even death—can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. If your heart has been heavy, you’ve felt inadequate, or you’ve struggled to find the words, I hope this episode is an encouragement to you.  If you would like to support this podcast with a monthly or one-time gift, thank you! https://www.sherriyoungward.com/support To find out about upcoming gatherings and new projects, please join my email list at www.sherriyoungward.com

    274 - The Answer

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. -Romans 8:1 Have you ever reached the end of the day discouraged because you lost your patience… again? After talking with a close friend about her struggle to be patient with her kids (who, by the way, have a wonderful mom), I found my own patience being tested after two frustrating hours on the phone with my insurance company. As I was transferred from one department to another, I could feel my impatience thermometer rising. Whether it’s driving, a certain co-worker, “customer service,” or grape jelly on your new carpet, we can lose patience and say, or even think, things we wish we hadn’t. Even the apostle Paul wrestled with this. We will look at Romans 7, where Paul wrote of his struggle and, more importantly, his answer. Spoiler alert: his answer is the same as ours. I’ll end the episode with my song, "Because You First Loved Me." 273 - Mercy Giver

Jeremiah 38:10–11 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.” So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe in the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern by ropes. In an earlier episode called "Bricks, Rags, and Mercy" (episode 217), I shared how Ebed-melech showed mercy by using old rags and worn-out clothes to make Jeremiah’s rescue much less harsh than ropes alone. Mercy softens the rough edges of life in this world—whether through rags, old clothes, casseroles, songs, a cold cup of water, or a brick on a step. You’ll have to listen to discover how two bricks on the top step of a community pool, a family of fuzzy little ducklings, and a year-long question became another reminder of God’s mercy. Then, one year later, eight new ducklings arrived… and the story wasn’t over. 270 - Nourishing Words

Proverbs 15:4 (NKJV) A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. I was struck by the picture in Proverbs 15:4. A wholesome, soothing, gentle tongue is compared to a tree of life. One commentary described it this way: "a properly nourished tree grows and provides shade and refreshment for all who seek its shelter." What a contrast to words that are reckless, deceitful, or harsh. Proverbs says they can break or crush the spirit. Most of us have experienced the sting of careless words, but hopefully we have also been strengthened by words that brought comfort, wisdom, and healing at just the right time. We probably all would like to get better with our words (even the ones we think). The good news is that we can learn to speak differently as we follow the example of Jesus. Isaiah describes Him as One Who listened to His Father morning by morning so that He would know “the word that sustains the weary.” As we receive His wisdom, comfort, and instruction, we learn to give the same away. May our words become a tree of life, offering shade, refreshment, healing, and hope to those around us. 268 - The Fuel of Perseverance (The Restore Project - Part 9 Encore)

We are currently revisiting The Restore Project series. We hope you enjoy going back with us. Welcome to The Restore Project — a series centered around Psalm 23.  Here is Session 9.   (Feel free to listen in any order.)  Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. This is the last episode of The Restore Project. I will go over some themes we’ve looked at in this series, kind of like when you skip a rock and it leaves rings where it’s been. Just a skim over. Maybe you’ll hear something you want to revisit, or missed altogether. (Fun fact, I love skipping rocks.) I will end with the song, "The Lord is My Shepherd," which is Psalm 23 in its entirety and is the third song I’ve written inspired by this Psalm. Well, I only wrote the music, David wrote the words. Thank you for following along.  If you would like to support this podcast with a monthly or one-time gift, thank you! https://www.sherriyoungward.com/support To find out about upcoming gatherings and new projects, please join my email list at www.sherriyoungward.com
