Kimmy never planned on being an electrician in construction, but after seeing what electrician installers were earning at the business she worked at.. she decided she wanted a slice of that rather lucrative pie! After being allowed to shadow the installers, she enrolled at College to obtain her electrician qualification, but realised she'd need an apprenticeship. Unable to find one locally, she thought of a way to not only get one, but make good money in the process. Kimmy goes on to describe her career as an electrician in the trades, including what really happens when working in Social Housing, how she was awarded the On The Tools 'Electrician of the Year' 2024 award, and how she is able to comfortably work only 2 days a week due to her social media earnings. In our first episode of 2025, Mark sits down with exhibitions builder/carpenter Greg of 'buildandbesceneuk' to chat about all things construction, building exhibitions stands, music, social media and deadlines. Initially, Greg studied Forensic Psychology at university, but his real passion was building things and beinf hands on. He found himself building sets and stages for major sporting events around the globe, such as the Fifa World Cup, The UEFA Championship, and the Olympics. Greg goes into detail about what it takes to survive in such a demanding industry, including 20 hour work days, early morning starts, and emergency call-outs in the middle of the night.     E92 | In this week's episode of the Trade Legends podcast, Mark @MJTiffPlumbing sat down with plumber Nathan @NNPlumber to discuss his ongoing battle against Cancer (Non-Hodgkin lymphoma) whilst working as a tradesman within the construction industry. Chemotherapy and Construction. My Non-Hodgkin lymphoma battle as a PLUMBER. In the UK, the lifetime risk of developing cancer is approximately 1 in 2, according to Cancer Research UK. Nathan is a young plumber in the construction industry, and in early 2024 he noticed a little pain in his lower back. He thought little of it, as every tradesman in the construction industry gets a bad back from time to time. The pain failed to subside, and after many weeks of debilitating pain and endless doctors appointments, Nathan finally discovered what was causing him so much discomfort. He was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (a cancer of the blood) and Nathan now knew that he had a real battle on his hands. He would have to stop working as a plumber, undergo 6 months of chemotherapy, and finally undergo an intense course of radiotherapy to destroy the tumours that had built up on his spine. Nathan now wants to educate people in the trades on a topic that he himself knew nothing about. As the earlier statement read, cancer will affect 1 in 2 people, so educating ourselves on the topic is paramount. In this week's episode, Alex and Mark sit down with gas engineer Kieran, and plumber Pete from @OffTheJobpodcastuk Kieran initially planned on being an electrician, but after working as a labourer with a plumber, he decided to pursue a career as a plumber and gas engineer, and after completing his apprenticeship he decided to set up his own business. We spoke to Pete back in Episode 43, where he discussed how he became a plumber in the construction industry, but also how he knew that he wouldn't be able to stay working in the trades forever. Pete now knows that within 2 years, he will be off the tools completely. The guys started their podcast around 1 year ago, after a chance meeting at a trades event where Kieran was speaking. "Who's this f**kin' wally..." Pete thought to himself.
