The Cost of Solving the Wrong Problem

One of the most expensive mistakes you can make... is solving the wrong problem... really well. Think about that. You can work hard. Build a plan. Hire good people. Spend money. Execute brilliantly. And still end up... somewhere you shouldn't be. Because execution cannot rescue... a faulty diagnosis. I see versions of this with people and organisations. A professional thinks: "I need another qualification." But perhaps capability isn't the real problem. Positioning is. A business thinks: "We need more marketing." But perhaps visibility isn't the problem. The offer no longer fits what the market values. An organisation launches another transformation programme. New systems. New structures. More investment. But what if the underlying problem... has been misread? This is where opportunity cost matters. Because every pound... every hour... every year... every strategic decision... committed to the wrong problem... cannot be invested somewhere else. And that cost is often invisible. We see what we spent. We don't always see... what we could have built instead. That's why Orientation should come before acceleration. Before asking: "How do we solve this?" ask: "Are we solving the right problem?" Look at the evidence. Challenge the assumptions. Read the terrain. Locate the real constraint. Then move. Because sometimes... the greatest saving isn't doing something more efficiently. It's discovering... that you shouldn't have been doing it at all. Before you allocate more... orient. This is Martins Toluhi. And this is Orientation Notes™. Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. People do not primarily act their way into a new life. They enact the future permitted by their dominant state. As you go into the rest of your year, resist the urge to rush into more activity. Instead, pause and ask yourself one honest question: How am I showing up and what needs to shift? Let me know what you think in the comment session. Enjoy

Stop calling every difficult season a setback

Not every difficult season is a setback. Sometimes difficulty is information. When progress slows, opportunities disappear or something that once worked no longer seems to work, our instinct is often to conclude that something has gone wrong. But repeated resistance may be telling us something about our fit, timing, terrain, capability or position. In this episode of Orientation Notes™, Martins Toluhi explores a simple principle: before you label the season, read the season. The objective is not to romanticise difficulty or assume every obstacle should be overcome. Sometimes the right response is to persevere. Sometimes it is to adjust. And sometimes it is to stop. Orientation is learning to examine the evidence well enough to tell the difference. If you are at an inflection point and trying to understand what your current season may be telling you, begin with the Orientation Diagnostic™ and use it to examine your present position before deciding your next move. Read the season. Then move. Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. People do not primarily act their way into a new life. They enact the future permitted by their dominant state. As you go into the rest of your year, resist the urge to rush into more activity. Your Life Is Producing Data

Your life is producing data. Every day. The question is... are you reading it? Think about the last few years of your life. The opportunities that keep finding you. The problems people repeatedly ask you to solve. The work that seems to bring out your best. And the situations... where you keep getting stuck. We often treat these as separate events. I don't think they always are. Sometimes... they are clues. And when the same kind of clue keeps appearing... pay attention. Because clues repeated over time... can reveal a pattern. I have been seeing this in my work with people. Someone comes in believing they need something new. A new direction. A new capability. Perhaps even a completely new beginning. But when we slow down... and examine their actual history... something interesting happens. We begin to see evidence. Capabilities they have repeatedly demonstrated. Problems they consistently solve. Environments where they perform unusually well. Value that has been there... sometimes for years... but has never been properly recognised. The answer wasn't hiding somewhere in the future. Some of the evidence... was already sitting in their life. That is an important Orientation principle: Events are clues. Repeated clues become patterns. And patterns... can become decision intelligence. So here's something you can do. Take one sheet of paper. Look back over the last five years. And ask: What keeps happening? What keeps working? What keeps finding me? What keeps frustrating me? Don't judge it. Just observe. Because your past is not only something that happened to you. It may also contain intelligence... for what you should do next. Learn to read the clues. This is Martins Toluhi. And this is Orientation Notes™. Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. People do not primarily act their way into a new life. Emotional Distortion Changes the Terrain

Emotional Distortion Changes the Terrain Here is something many leaders miss. The terrain is not always the problem. Sometimes your perception of the terrain is. Fear distorts reality. Shame distorts reality. Urgency distorts reality. Comparison distorts reality. And when your perception is distorted, your decisions become distorted too. That’s dangerous. Because decisions made from emotional fog often create structural consequences. I have seen again and again how brilliant professionals make poor decisions not necessarily for lacked intelligence, Often times it is due to lack of emotional clarity. It is the reason we pay close attention to emotional distortion in Orientation Mastery. Because if the lens is distorted, the reading of the map will be inaccurate. And if the reading of the map is inaccurate, movement becomes dangerous. So before making major decisions, ask yourself: What emotion is influencing how I’m reading this? That question alone can save you years. This is why I say clarity is not just intellectual. It does have emotional implications. And emotional accuracy improves terrain accuracy. This is Martins Toluhi. This is Orientation Notes™. Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. People do not primarily act their way into a new life. They enact the future permitted by their dominant state. As you go into the rest of your year, resist the urge to rush into more activity. Misalignment Is Expensive

Misalignment Is Expensive Most people underestimate the cost of misalignment. They think the cost is frustration. In reality, It’s much bigger than that. Misalignment costs years. It costs opportunities. It costs confidence. It costs momentum. And perhaps the greatest cost is this: Effort without return. That painful experience of giving so much and seeing so little. Not because you lack value. But because your value is not properly positioned. This happens often with professionals. Highly capable. Highly intelligent. Deeply committed. But still stuck. Why? Because capability without correct orientation creates waste. And here’s the danger. When results don’t come, most people increase effort. But if the position is wrong, more effort only increases the loss. That’s why in Orientation work, one of the first things we do is assess: Where are you really standing? Because sometimes the solution is not more work. It is repositioning. And repositioning can recover years. Remember this: A wrong position can make the right person look ineffective. That’s why orientation matters.
