    Storyteller Owen Staton Just Rambles Really Every now and then, I put the ghosts, legends, strange creatures and stories to one side and talk about something rather more frightening… Myself. In this episode of Time Between Times, I thought I’d do something I don’t often do. I thought I’d tell you a little bit about the person behind the stories. Where I came from.How I got here.The things that have shaped me.The places I’ve been.The mistakes I’ve made.The things I’ve learned along the way.And perhaps most importantly, where I find myself today. It isn't really an autobiography. I haven't suddenly become terribly important and started referring to myself in the third person. There’s no great structure to it either. I haven't sat down with a clipboard and carefully planned out my life in chronological order. I just started talking. So this is me, rambling my way through my own story. A few memories, a few reflections, some things I’ve never really talked about before, and perhaps a few things I’m still trying to make sense of myself. There are stories about the storyteller. There are funny moments. There are darker moments. There are things I’m proud of. Things I’m less proud of. People and places that have left their mark on me. And perhaps a glimpse of the man who exists behind the voice you hear telling you stories week after week. But I should warn you… I don't tell you everything. Some stories belong to other people. Some memories are mine alone. So, if you've ever wondered who the slightly rumpled bloke is who spends his evenings wandering around Wales looking for ghosts, talking to trees and frightening himself with stories… this is probably your chance to find out. Make yourself a cup of tea. Get comfortable. Come and sit with me for a while. This isn't really an episode about ghosts. It's not about folklore. It's not even particularly about storytelling.     Time between Times Storytelling with Owen Staton. Ghost stories from the Tower of London

    THE TOWER — WHERE THE DEAD HAVE LEARNED TO WAIT There are places where history is remembered. And then there are places where it feels as though history is still happening. The Tower of London is one of those places. For almost a thousand years, its ancient stones have witnessed coronations, imprisonments, betrayal, torture and death. Kings and queens have passed through its gates. Prisoners have climbed its staircases knowing they would never return. Children have disappeared into its darkness. And countless lives have ended beneath its shadow. And perhaps some of those stories never truly ended. In this very special episode of Time Between Times, I take you into the darkness of the Tower of London and explore some of its most chilling ghost stories. The restless spirit of Anne Boleyn. The mysterious ghosts of the Princes in the Tower. The tragic apparition of Lady Jane Grey. The terrifying phantom bear said to have appeared near the Jewel House. And the extraordinary account of a Yeoman Warder who felt something touch the back of his neck inside the ancient Salt Tower. But there is another reason this episode is particularly personal to me. Because while visiting the White Tower, I experienced something I still cannot explain. Walking upon one of its ancient staircases, I suddenly felt someone breathing directly beside my ear. I turned. There was nobody there. Perhaps it was nothing. Perhaps there was a perfectly ordinary explanation. But standing inside a building with almost a thousand years of history behind it, surrounded by stories of people who supposedly never quite left... it was difficult not to wonder. What if some places remember? What if certain moments become so deeply embedded within the stones that they refuse to disappear? And what if, every now and then... the living happen to walk through them? So tonight, my friends, draw your chair a little closer to the fire. Let the lights grow dim. Listen carefully to the silence. And come with me into the ancient darkness of the Tower of London. Because perhaps the ghosts of the Tower aren't waiting for us to find them.     The Eagles beneath the earth There are some places where the darkness seems to begin long before the sun has gone down… And beneath the beautiful towers of Castell Coch, high above the Taff Valley, there is said to be a darkness that has been waiting for centuries. An ancient passage. A forgotten treasure. A great iron chest filled with gold and precious things. And guarding it… Two enormous eagles. In this new episode of Time Between Times, I take you beneath the mountain and into one of the strangest legends associated with Castell Coch. It is a story of buried treasure, secret tunnels, a ghostly Cavalier who walks through the walls, and two supernatural guardians whose eyes burn in the darkness. Men have supposedly entered the passage in search of the treasure. Some carried weapons. Others carried silver bullets blessed by a priest. None, according to the old tale, were prepared for what they found waiting in the darkness. Because perhaps the treasure was never meant to be found. Perhaps something was placed there to make certain that it never would be. So tonight, draw your chair a little closer to the fire. Let the wind move through the trees. Let the shadows gather around you. And listen carefully… Because somewhere beneath Castell Coch, in a passage that may or may not exist, an ancient iron chest may still be waiting.     There are some places where the past feels very close. Places where the stories seem to have settled into the landscape itself… where an old name, a lonely field or a strange tale passed down through generations can make us wonder what might have happened there long ago. In this episode of Time Between Times, I take you to a field near Mold in North Wales once known as Cae Ellyllon — The Field of the Goblins or Fairies. For generations, local people spoke of a mysterious golden figure seen standing upon an ancient burial mound. A strange, glittering apparition appearing in the darkness… And then, in 1833, workmen digging in that very field uncovered something extraordinary. Beneath the earth lay an ancient Bronze Age burial — and with it one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries ever made in Wales. A magnificent ceremonial cape made almost entirely from gold. The Mold Gold Cape. But what makes this story so fascinating is the question that sits between folklore and history. Why was this particular place associated with a golden apparition long before the ancient burial was uncovered? Was the ghost simply a story that grew around an ancient mound? Or was something much older somehow remembered in the folklore of the people who lived there? Tonight, draw your chair a little closer to the fire and come with me into the darkness of Cae Ellyllon.     The Beast of Pontrhydyfen Welcome back to the firepit at the heart of the forest, my friends. Tonight’s story is a little different. Because this is not simply a tale I found in an old book or discovered in some forgotten newspaper. This is a story that takes me back to my own childhood, to the village of Pontrhydyfen in the Afan Valley in the early 1980s. I was at school there when rumours began to spread about something strange moving through the hills around Tonmawr and Pontrhydyfen. A great cat. Something wild. Something that, according to the stories, had no business being there. For us children, the creature quickly became the talk of the playground. We whispered about sightings, footprints and enormous cats hiding in the woods. And at times, we were even told not to play outside. I remember the feeling of looking towards those dark Welsh hills and wondering what might be hiding amongst the trees. Decades later, reports from the period would tell of large cats seen around Tonmawr, including a remarkable series of alleged photographs. Some witnesses believed they had seen a leopard or puma. Others suggested more ordinary explanations. But perhaps the truth isn’t quite the point. Because when you are a child, a mystery can become part of the landscape itself. And sometimes, long after the story has faded from the playground, you can still look towards those hills and remember… What if it really was there? So tonight, draw a little closer to the fire. Let the mist settle over the Afan Valley. Listen for the river beneath the old bridge. But history is only the beginning… For when the battle was over and Gwenllian fell upon the fields of Kidwelly, the people of Wales believed her story had not ended.
