Season 4 Episode 134 Better Plants Ireland ( Audio )

About Better Plants https://betterplants.ie/ We source all our seaweed from Irish suppliers and ensure they are a 100% natural product. We have been using seaweed products in our garden for years and found that there were a lot of products that didn’t really do what they claimed to do. They contained chemicals and some were so watered down that the goodness was gone out of the seaweed. A lot of plant food out there is exactly that, food for the plant. They do nothing for the soil. We set about looking for a product that was not only natural and feed the plant, but also feed the soil. Over-use of the same soil will result in poor crops resulting in the need to use chemical plant foods more often.  We have some really great suppliers around the west coast of Ireland who hand harvested seaweed called Ascophyllum Nodosum. This is a particular brown algae species living in “extreme” conditions. It had to adapt to 2 periods of emersion of 6 hours in any 24 hours of a full year which explains part of its specific natural composition. Better Plants is traceable right to the exact location and seaweed date of harvesting along the eastern Atlantic Irish shoreline. This cold water shoreline is particularly rich in minerals and remains unpolluted by heavy metalsMany commercial extracts contain a low amount of processed seaweeds but high levels of additives. Better Plants is based purely on 100% fresh seaweed. You can therefore properly assess the real benefits of the seaweed after regular applications based on low concentrations. The purity and the integrity are obvious by the characteristic odour of the fresh seaweed and the green-olive colour identical to raw seaweed. In addition, low temperatures do not alternate the general composition of the seaweed polysaccharides. We also supply a range of natural and organic animal feed. These products are made from 100% organic seaweed. We use this milled seaweed to feed the animals on our farm. We find that all of our animals are a lot healthier as a result. We find that more and more people are using Better Plants products because they are 100% natural, organic and have all the vitamins and minerals to keep your animals healthy. Season 4 Episode 131 Kate Henning ( Audio )

www.katehenningplantingdesign.co.uk My background I was awarded full Membership of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists in 1994 and worked in private practice for 15 years on projects including railway station refurbishments for London Underground and the construction of  properties in London and the Home Counties for prestigious house builders and private clients.  In 2008 I took a career break and for a couple of years was a Foster Carer and had a great time introducing children to gardening, especially growing edibles. I was amazed to discover that some children are completely unaware of where and how fruit and vegetables grow. In 2014 I started my own garden maintenance business which was very successful and then decided to use my design and drawing skills from my days in architecture and train to become a garden designer. After much consideration I studied for a Diploma in Planting Design with the London College of Garden Design at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. I loved every moment and was awarded the Diploma with Distinction. I then went on to take their Certificate in Plantsmanship, and passed with Distinction. In 2026 I exhibited a show garden in the Balcony & Container Garden section of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in collaboration with my friend and fellow designer Susie Kennedy. The garden was called 'Tales from the Riverbank' and was our first dive into the deep waters of show gardens. We were awarded a Gold Medal. My Planting Design Studio is the result of all my knowledge of construction, planting design, botany and technical drawing, converging to create something really special to me. I love every minute of what I do and consider it a pleasure and a privilege to create beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces. I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture and I have an allotment where I love to spend stolen moments and grow for pure pleasure. I look forward to meeting you. Kate
