Marriage Puzzle

Juli and Thomas Hobby

Marriage is a lot like putting together a brand new puzzle. You see the picture on the box and think "I can do that!" or "That would be fun to put together." But once you open the box you realize how much work is involved in turning over all the pieces, finding the edges and what fits in the middle. In marriage, you are constantly turning over new pieces to find out where they go. We'll be talking about our marriage in an attempt to pass along any wisdom we can to others. We hope you'll join us on the journey where together we'll work on marriage, one puzzle piece at a time.

Attachment Styles in Marriage: Connection vs. Space

When your spouse gets home after work, what do they need most: connection or space? One of the most common marriage conflicts doesn't happen during a major disagreement—it happens during the first few minutes after one spouse walks through the door. In episode 104 of the Marriage Puzzle podcast, we're discussing attachment styles, emotional needs, and why some people recharge through connection while others recharge through solitude. We'll explore how these differences can create misunderstandings, feelings of rejection, and unnecessary conflict when couples assume the worst about each other's needs. You'll learn how to interpret your spouse's behavior through grace instead of fear, create healthy "coming home" rhythms, and build a plan that helps both spouses feel loved and understood. Key Takeaways: • Why some people need connection while others need space after a long day • How attachment styles impact marriage communication • Common assumptions that create unnecessary conflict • How to stop interpreting your spouse's needs as rejection • Practical ways to create a healthy after-work routine • Simple conversations that help both spouses feel valued This Week's Challenge:Talk with your spouse about what helps each of you transition from work mode to home mode. Create a simple plan that honors both of your needs and commit to following through. "Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."— Philippians 2:4 If this episode helped you, share it with another couple and be sure to follow Marriage Puzzle wherever you listen to podcasts.
