    SPFL weekend 14 review!

    Hibernian booked themselves in their first League Cup final since 2016 by ridding themselves of the Hampden Park hoodoo against Heart of Midlothian a day after Halloween, and will now face Rangers for the trophy in mid-December. In the Premiership, Falkirk beat Celtic for the first time since 2007, and Motherwell got their first win in 60 days. Down in the Championship, the bubble appears to have burst for Stenhousemuir, Arbroath are sick of the sight of George Oakley and Raith Rovers, while Partick Thistle’s 25-Championship game unbeaten run at home is snapped by *checks notes* Greenock Morton. In League One, Ross County now have a slender advantage at the top of the table, with the gap being more than it is between fifth and ninth thanks to East Fife’s win over Queen of the South and Airdrieonians losing to *checks notes again* Cove Rangers. And finally, League Two where the top two drew 0-0 at Stair Park, with Clyde being the happier of the two you would assume, the Spartans laying down their play-off credentials with a victory over struggling Annan Athletic and Stirling Albion somehow becoming the form side in the division with their dismantling of Forfar Athletic.     SPFL weekend 13 review!

    Storm Boleo has been and gone with Jamie and Mike picking up on the remnants of what was left of this weekend’s action across the Premiership, Championship, League One and Scottish Cup. In the top-flight we had Motherwell matching an unwanted record that goes back to 2003; Falkirk playing to the conditions and Kilmarnock not so much; as well as customary on this show…talking about another Aberdeen defeat. Scotland’s second-tier had decisive winners in every game with Dunfermline winning at Hampden (Lesser) and Inverness Caledonian Thistle winning in Fife. There was also the little matter of first versus second in the first of Stenhousemuir’s three games in six days against the pre-season promotion favourites. Down in League One, Hamilton and Ross County won to the surprise of no-one, but there is a special mention for Brian Graham and his penalty-box instincts. We also wonder just how Queen of the South can be so Jekyll and Hyde. And another win for Montrose as the Mighty Mo’ keep motoring on. In the Scottish Cup we see the League Two scalps of Forfar Athletic and Stirling Albion taken in shock results, with Annan Athletic needing penalties to see themselves past Huntly.     SPFL Weekend 12 Review!

    The managerial merry-go-round commences as not one, but two SPFL managers lost their jobs this week. We bid adieu to ‘the bunneted one’ Dick Campbell for maybe the final time as East Fife moved on from the 72-year-old, and Dumbarton dispensed with Frank McKeown after a humbling in the Challenge Cup against rivals Clydebank. Elsewhere Marink Reedijk already feels the hotseat as Hibernian slipped to the bottom of the table with successive defeats under the Dutchman. Celtic ran out rampant winners against Hearts, who had the most calamitous defending you'll ever see. And why having an unfashionable and stuffy Scottish manager still has a place at the top table when Steven Pressley took on Derek McInnes.  In the Championship, we talk about erroneous refereeing decisions as Matthew MacDiarmid actually made the Partick Thistle victory newsworthy. Stenhousemuir were held by Raith for the second time this season and Greenock Morton sent Queen’s Park to the foot of the table with a 2-0 victory at Cappielow, their second win in successive weeks. Peterhead won the battle of the bottom of League One as Cove Rangers lost 2-0, life after Dick is hard as under-pressure Andy Graham and his Alloa Athletic side emerged triumphant from Methil. And there was Hamilton keeping pace with Ross County as they won the televised affair with Airdrieonians in one of the many Lanarkshire derbies in the division. League Two was not the most noteworthy this week, but we have the first game of James Craigan's official reign in charge of the Spartans, Danny Lennon’s return to the dugout as his interim spell began with a draw against a stabilising Stirling Albion. And Edinburgh City drew with Elgin and kept a clean sheet, no easy feat for visiting sides.     SPFL Weekend 11 Review!

    Normal service resumes as we have action from the Premiership, Championship, League One and Two. After three weeks off, Jamie was hoping for another hiatus as his Aberdeen side were beaten at Pittodrie against St Johnstone. Elsewhere there was an excellent performance by Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle, whereas capital rivals Hibernian failed to win under their new boss Marink Reedijk. In the Championship: sporting director David Martindale may need to chat with David Martindale the interim manager about Livingston’s form; Stenhousemuir finally lose, and Greenock Morton finally win.  Down in the third tier: Hamilton Academical and Ross County win to the surprise of nobody, and Lanarkshire rivals Airdrieoanins and East Kilbride draw to go four unbeaten.  And finally in League Two: Stefan Laird plays the ‘heel’ as Elgin beat Forfar for a rare home defeat at Station Park; Stranraer pile misery on Annan Athletic, and Stirling lift themselves off the foot of the table.     SPFL Weekend 10 review and Scotland!

    More Scotland chat this week as we cover both of the national team’s outings this week. We don’t belabour the Championship this week after our extensive coverage of the division last time out, but we are across the three games and the dismissal of Ian Murray from Greenock Morton. In League One, there was a crazy game between ninth and tenth as Queen of the South just edged out Cove Rangers; East Kilbride kept the top two honest with a comprehensive win in Methil; and we have the televised game, allowing us to see Hamilton Academical for the full 90 for the first time this season. League Two was also back after the Challenge Cup last weekend and we had Elgin handing out a hammering to league-leading Clyde, meaning there has been 25 goals in five league games at Borough Briggs so far. Stirling got their first win since their opening day outing against Dumbarton, and speaking of the Sons, they made it back-to-back wins to solidify themselves in the middle of the pack. And finally a peak at the Scottish Cup which commenced on Friday with a local Ayrshire derby, but sadly the spectacle was not becoming of the occasion.     Scotland and Championship special!

    With no Premiership, League One and Two, it was as good a time as any to give the main focus of the show to the Championship after discussing Sébastien Pocognoli’s first game in charge as Scotland manager. And we had enough time to have a brief look at the Challenge Cup, especially that 14-0 win by Ross County over a depleted Heart of Midlothian B.     SPFL weekend 8 review with Fraser MacLeod of The 30!

    Hello and welcome to the Late Kick Off Scottish Football Podcast episode 223! Joining Jamie and Michael this week is podcast debutant Fraser MacLeod from ‘The 30’ on X and Instagram (@the_thirty_). In typical Sportsound fashion, we begin in the Premiership with Rangers as they visited Celtic Park in the second Old Firm in the space of a week. Elsewhere in the division, Dundee United dismantled a St Mirren side who have now lost three on the spin and we talk about the various incomings and outgoings at both Aberdeen and Hibernian. To the Championship: Stenhousemuir have had an excellent week with two wins and two clean sheets; Ayr United win at Hampden (Lesser) to put pressure on the bottom two clubs in the division; and why can’t anyone score as we examine a 0-0 between Partick Thistle and Raith Rovers, who failed to even had a shot on target at Firhill. Our descent down the league takes us to League One, where Montrose won their seventh game on the bounce, inflicting East Fife to their first league defeat at home in six months. A mention for Hamilton, knocked off the summit, but keeping pace with Ross County thanks to Andy Ryan’s first-half hat-trick against hapless QoS. And the marquee game featured a pod favourite, Kyle Glasgow scoring for Alloa Athletic, who stung, but were ultimately swatted away by visiting East Kilbride – who ironically play at the Bumblebee Stadium. And, finally, in the fourth tier, Stranraer visited Elgin in the longest journey between two SPFL clubs and battered their hosts and went to a point behind league-leading Clyde. In the village of Kelty, the Jambos lost their perfect home record and are now one of four teams sat on nine points, and Forfar get back to winning ways as they stop the bleeding of six winless outings by seeing off Annan Athletic.     SPFL weekend 7 review!

    Hello and welcome to the Late Kick Off Football Podcast episode 222! A hat-trick heavy episode as we feature not one, but two trebles in the lower leagues this weekend. Not only that, but we have one team not registering a single shot in a 4-0 scudding, and ‘Sir’ David Gray will return to the venue which made him a legend, this time as a manager. Facing city rivals Heart of Midlothian, who beat fellow Maroon outfit Stenhousemuir. In the marquee matchups, we talk Rangers-Celtic, Montrose winning six on the spin, Elgin coming away empty-handed after a long-trek down to Dumfriesshire, and the return of David Martindale as his Livingston side demolished hapless Greenock Morton. And there was mentions of a couple of teams getting their first league victories of the season, leaving Falkirk and Kilmarnock as the last of the 42 to get off the mark.
