    Patrick Gale

Over the past four decades Patrick Gale has built an international reputation for writing beautifully crafted literary fiction that combines intimate character studies with broader social themes. His novels and short stories explore family relationships, forbidden love, identity, and the long-term impact of secrets. His latest novel, Love Lane, picks up where 2015’s A Place Called Winter left off. It continues the fictionalised story of Patrick’s great-grandfather, Harry Kane, who was exiled from a privileged life in Edwardian England to eke out an existence as a homesteader on the newly colonized Western prairies of Canada. Using boxes of letters that he inherited decades later, Patrick explores the impact of Harry’s long absence and eventual return to England in the 1950s, to piece together what his family left unsaid. Join Patrick and Red as they explore the history of the homesteaders, prison life for those outside the bars, and double standards around sex and sexuality. Chris Bridges

Chris Bridges is a British author and former palliative care nurse with a hidden disability. Both his experience as a healthcare worker, and his diagnosis, have inspired him to write thrillers featuring protagonists with chronic illnesses, turning the trope of passive suffering on its head.  His latest novel, The Death Bed, ramps up the suspense to Hitchcockian levels.   When nurse Laura arrives at her old friend’s death bed, it’s not out of compassion, it’s out of fear. Sixteen years’ ago, tragedy tore their group of nursing students apart and, knowing that the dying don’t always go quietly, Laura is there to ensure that the truth of what happened remains in the past.                                                                                         Join Chris and Red as they explore the psychological effects of illness on both patients and caregivers; and hear Chris reveal his unique path to publication.  About AMI AMI is a media company that entertains, informs and empowers Canadians with disabilities through three broadcast services — AMI-tv and AMI-audio in English and AMI-télé in French — and streaming platform AMI+. Robert Macfarlane

To celebrate the 100th edition of the show Red is joined by an author whose books on landscape, nature, place, people and language have won international acclaim, and helped bring the conversation about man’s relationship with the natural world into our everyday lives. Regarded by many as the outstanding nature writer of his generation, Robert Macfarlane continues that conversation in his latest book, Is a River Alive? Through its pages he invites us to reframe our view of rivers, to see them as living entities with intrinsic value and rights that should be protected, rather than merely natural resources to be exploited. Guided by this idea, he journeys from the cloud forests of Ecuador to the polluted waterways of south India, and the wild waters of Quebec’s Mutehekau Shipu, or Magpie River, examining how different cultures and movements are redefining rivers as entities with life, history, and legal rights, and arguing that our fate is bound up with the health and recognition of rivers. Join Robert and Red as they explore rivers, mountains and the evolving relationship between Man and Nature. Julie M. Green

A decade after learning that her son is autistic, writer Julie M. Green received her own diagnosis, shedding light on a lifetime of feeling othered and misunderstood. In Motherness: A Memoir of Generational Autism, Parenthood, and Radical Acceptance, Julie offers an unflinchingly honest and profoundly compassionate account of raising a neuro-diverse child while processing her own presence "on the spectrum". With more girls and women being diagnosed, many of them later in life, Julie argues that the face of autism is changing – and not before time. Join Julie and Red as they debunk some stereotypes and explore the psychology behind Autistic Spectrum Disorder and its presentation in different groups of people. J Randy Taraborrelli

J Randy Taraborrelli is a best-selling biographer and one of the most highly acclaimed historians of the Kennedys. His latest book, JFK: Public, Private, Secret, gives a richly detailed portrait of John F. Kennedy that explores beyond the iconic “Camelot” myth, to examine the man in three dimensions: his public life as Senator and President; his private life as husband, son, and brother; and his secret life of inner conflicts, personal flaws and hidden relationships. Drawing on decades of archival research, oral histories, Secret Service and intelligence files, he paints Kennedy as a great man with great flaws. Join Randy and Red as they side-step the mythology and conspiracy theories to examine the underlying character of the 35th President of The United States, and who he might have become had he lived to win another term in office.
