    Keith Secola: “What’s the coolest sound you’ve heard recently...?”

    Keith Secola is an Anishinabe (Ojibwe) artist, garnering awards and accolades as a musician, a singer, a songwriter, a composer and a producer. He is highly skilled with the guitar, flute, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, and piano, and has played in venues from the halls of the Chicago Urban Indian Centre, to the walls of the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Blending Anishinabe roots with blues, rock, and world music into something entirely his own, Keith Secola is known around the world. He has spent a lifetime bringing Native Americana to the people. His song NDN Kars has been the number one requested song on tribal radio since 1992; a contemporary Native anthem that earned him a devoted following and legendary status.     Michael Yellow Bird is a Professor at the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Manitoba, Canada. He is an enrolled member of the Mandan Hidatsa Arikara Nation in North Dakota, USA.     Bridging the gap # 67: between Lucy Smith, creator and musician, and Byron Graves, author...

    Lucy Smith is a Chicago-based musician and singer-songwriter who likes to explore and present jazz, folk, gospel, blues, and more. At the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence, Lucy Smith performs a special repertoire of traditional and original compositions and classics for ‘America: Songs and Stories of Protest and Freedom’, a multi-genre concert of spoken word and music written and narrated by award-winning journalist, Cheryl Corley. The concert chronicles America’s story from its founding years to the 21st century and takes place in various parks and venues in Chicago throughout the summer of 2026. It includes Emma Lazarus’ poem ‘The New Colossus’ and Langston Hughes’ ‘Backlash Blues’ along with the words of other American authors. Songs include Thomas Paine’s ‘Liberty Tree’, Woody Guthrie’s ‘This Land is Your Land’, and Marvin Gaye's ‘Mercy Mercy Me’. In 2025, Lucy received the Black Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music from the Black Arts and Culture Alliance of Chicago.     Byron Graves is Ojibwe and Lakota and was born and raised on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota, where they played high school basketball.     National Geographic Photographer Kiliii Yüyan is a visual storyteller, and Nat Geo Explorer, whose work has brought him to some of the world’s harshest environments. Chinese-American and Nanai/Hèzhé (indigenous East Asian), he has traveled across the polar regions working with indigenous cultures, wildlife, and underwater environments. Kiliii was a traditional dsai (kayak) builder until he became a photographer. He has photographed the cover of National Geographic Magazine three times.
