    Sermon: The Rest He Gives

What if the rest you're longing for isn't something you have to earn by clearing your schedule? In this sermon on the Third Commandment, Pastor David Balla asks what it really means to keep the Sabbath holy — not as a rule about a day off, but as an invitation into a rest only Jesus Christ can give. Many of us live as if everything depends on our own unceasing effort, and this message names that restlessness honestly before turning to the good news: Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, has already finished the work that matters most. Through his cross and empty tomb, he offers grace, forgiveness, and redemption to everyone who is weary and heavy laden. You'll hear how this rest connects to the Kingdom of Heaven, and how Christ continues to give it today — through his Word and through the Lord's Supper, where believers receive his true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. This is a message about salvation resting not on our striving, but on what Christ has already accomplished for us. Preached at Peace Lutheran Church in Plainfield, Illinois, for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost. Sermon: The Name Above Every Name

The Name Above Every Name | Exodus 20:7 | Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost | LCMS Sermon What does it really mean to take God's name in vain — and why would a holy God ever hand sinners the right to call Him by name at all? Most of us assume the Second Commandment is only about crude language, and quietly consider ourselves innocent. But Scripture reveals something deeper: God's name is His own personal gift, disclosed to Moses at the burning bush, and every prayerless day we leave that gift unused is a quiet guilt we rarely name. This sermon traces that same holy name into the New Testament, where it rests on Jesus Christ — "the name above every name" — the one name through which grace, forgiveness, and salvation are freely given. Discover how the Kingdom of Heaven opens to sinners through Christ's work of redemption on the cross, how that name was placed on you in Baptism, and how you meet the risen Lord in the Lord's Supper. Sermon: The Idol Factory

The Idol Factory | Romans 1:21–25 | Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 19A) | LCMS Sermon What does your heart turn to first when life feels unsafe — money, relationships, control, or reputation? In this sermon on Romans 1:21–25, Pastor David Balla opens a new preaching series through the Ten Commandments, asking a question every generation avoids: what has quietly replaced God at the center of your heart? Saint Paul shows how easily the human heart trades the Creator for something it can see, manage, and control — turning good gifts into false gods that promise safety but never deliver. This message names that exchange honestly and calls us to repentance, then points to far greater news: God did not stay distant from a broken world. He came in the flesh, in Jesus Christ, to win forgiveness, redemption, and salvation for sinners, and He still gives Himself to His people today in the Lord's Supper. This is a message about grace, real and freely given, and an invitation into the Kingdom of Heaven that no manufactured idol could ever offer. Sermon: The Shepherd Who Bears the Millstone

The Shepherd Who Bears the Millstone | Matthew 18:1–20 | Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 18A) | LCMS Sermon Who is truly the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven — and what happens when we lead one of Christ's little ones to stumble? In this sermon on Matthew 18:1-20 for the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 18A), Pastor David Balla explores Jesus' surprising answer: true greatness means becoming like a child, trusting entirely in the Father's care. Jesus doesn't stop at correcting ambition. He warns that causing a fellow believer to sin brings real and lasting consequences — a warning that exposes how our careless words, broken trust, and even our silence wound the people around us. None of us stands innocent before this warning. But this sermon doesn't leave you under judgment. It follows Jesus into the parable of the lost sheep, showing a Shepherd who goes out searching for the one who has wandered — a picture of grace fulfilled at the cross, where Christ bore the punishment our sins deserved and won redemption and salvation for sinners. That forgiveness comes to you today in the Lord's Supper, where Christ gives His true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins, and in the assurance that no sin is too great to be forgiven. Sermon: Get Behind Me

Get Behind Me: The Cross We Cannot Avoid — Matthew 16:21-28 — Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 17) — LCMS Sermon Have you ever wanted Jesus to be your Savior, but only on your own terms? In this sermon on Matthew 16:21-28, Pastor David Balla examines Peter's stunned reaction when Jesus announces His coming suffering, death, and resurrection in Jerusalem, a reaction that exposes the same instinct hiding in every human heart: wanting God's blessings without God's cross. This message names that resistance honestly. We all, like Peter, want the crown without the cost. But Jesus walked the road to Calvary anyway, bearing our sin so that forgiveness, grace, and salvation could be freely given to sinners like us. His death opens the Kingdom of Heaven to all who believe, and that same redeeming work is still delivered to us today in the Lord's Supper, where Christ gives His true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. Whether you are wrestling with suffering, doubt, or what it means to follow Jesus faithfully, this sermon points you to the Savior who turns the cross into the doorway of eternal life. Sermon: The Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail

The Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail | Matthew 16:13–20 | Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost | LCMS Sermon Who do you say that Jesus is — and does your answer actually change anything when life feels uncertain? In this sermon on Matthew 16:13–20, we travel with Jesus and His disciples to Caesarea Philippi, where He asks Peter the question every person must eventually answer for themselves. Peter's confession — "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" — becomes the rock on which Christ promises to build His Church, a Kingdom of Heaven that no power of darkness can overthrow. We're honest about the doubt and anxiety so many of us feel when we measure faith by numbers, attendance, or outward success instead of resting in God's promises. But this message points beyond ourselves to the good news: Christ has already won the victory over sin and death. Through His cross and empty tomb, He offers grace, redemption, forgiveness, and salvation freely to all who trust in Him — gifts He continues to deliver through His Word and in the Lord's Supper. Sermon: The Faith that Cries Out

What do you do when you cry out to God and heaven seems silent? In this sermon on Matthew 15:21–28, we meet a Canaanite mother pleading for her demon-oppressed daughter — met at first with silence, and then a hard word, from Jesus Himself. Her story confronts a truth every person must face: none of us are born with a natural claim on God's mercy. We come empty-handed, in need of grace, not because of birth, nationality, or good works, but because Christ Himself throws open the door. This message traces her desperate, persistent faith — a faith that would not let go, even when the answer seemed to be no — and shows how that faith belongs to us today. We'll see how the Kingdom of Heaven welcomes outsiders, how redemption and forgiveness flow from Christ's cross, and how salvation is a free gift received by faith alone. We'll also see how Christ still feeds His Church in the Lord's Supper, giving His true Body and Blood for our forgiveness. If you've wondered whether God hears you in the silence, this sermon is for you. Sermon: Where Were You When I Laid the Foundations?

What do you do when God doesn’t answer your “why” questions? In this LCMS sermon on Job 38:1–11, Pastor David Balla explores God’s powerful response to Job’s suffering and reveals how our deepest need is not an explanation, but the presence of Jesus Christ. When life brings grief, loss, illness, or unanswered questions, God calls us to trust His promises rather than our own understanding. This Christ-centered sermon connects Job’s encounter with the Lord to Jesus walking on the stormy sea, His saving death and resurrection, and His continued presence in the Lord’s Supper. Discover how God’s grace, forgiveness, redemption, and salvation are found in Christ alone, who entered our suffering and gives eternal hope. Whether you’re searching for biblical encouragement, Christian teaching on suffering, or a sermon about trusting God through trials, this message points to the comfort and certainty found in Jesus and the Kingdom of Heaven. Sermon: The Bread That Satisfies the Hungry

What do you do when you're standing before a hungry crowd with nothing in your hands but five loaves and two fish? In this sermon on Matthew 14:19–20, we look at how Jesus took what little the disciples had, blessed it, broke it, and gave it—and the crowd ate and was satisfied. But this miracle points to something greater than a full stomach. It points to the deeper hunger every person carries: a hunger for forgiveness, for peace with God, for a love that doesn't run out. We're honest about the two ways we come to this hunger wrong—either numb to it, having drowned it out with a thousand lesser things, or crushed by guilt, certain we're not worthy to be fed at all. Then we turn to the good news: the same Jesus who fed the five thousand still takes bread and wine today and gives His true body and blood at the Lord's Supper, for the forgiveness of sins. This is grace—not earned, not measured out by our worthiness, but given freely, the way into the Kingdom of Heaven opened by Christ's own redemption and salvation won for you. Come hungry. He still satisfies. Subscribe for weekly sermons and devotions. Sermon: The Treasure Worth Everything

What do the Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl of Great Price really teach? In this Christ-centered Lutheran sermon, Pastor David Balla proclaims the biblical distinction between Law and Gospel, revealing that these parables are not primarily about what we sacrifice for God, but about what Christ gave to redeem us. Jesus is the One who sold everything to purchase His treasured possession—His Church. Drawing from Matthew 13:44–46 (ESV), this expository sermon explores God’s grace, salvation by faith alone, Christ’s atoning death, redemption, the Kingdom of Heaven, and the priceless gift of forgiveness. Discover how your worth is not found in possessions, success, reputation, or achievements, but in Christ, who gave His life on the cross and continues to deliver His saving gifts through Word and Sacrament, including the Lord’s Supper. This sermon is rooted in Confessional Lutheran theology (LCMS) and is ideal for Christians seeking faithful biblical preaching, verse-by-verse exposition, Gospel-centered teaching, and deeper understanding of Jesus’ parables. Sermon: Wheat/Weeds The Church in the World

In this Lutheran sermon on the Parable of the Wheat and the Weeds (Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43), we explore why the visible Church on earth is always a mixed field of wheat and weeds, and why Christ calls us to patience rather than premature judgment. Preached in the confessional, Law-and-Gospel tradition of C.F.W. Walther and the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), this message unpacks the Eighth Sunday after Pentecost, Proper 11A Gospel reading, showing how the Householder's patience protects the wheat until the final harvest at the Last Day. Drawing on Isaiah 44:8, Romans 8:18, 1 Corinthians 4:5, 2 Timothy 2:19, and Colossians 3:3, this sermon proclaims both the Law's warning against impatience and self-righteous judgment, and the Gospel's comfort that Christ alone knows and keeps His own. We also connect this parable to the Third Article of the Apostles' Creed, the holiness of the Church, and the Real Presence of Christ's body and blood in the Lord's Supper.
