Fadl Hassan Abbas

Fadl Hassan Abbas was a prominent Quran reciter and Islamic scholar from Palestine, born in 1932 in Saffuriyya. He passed away on February 9, 2011, in Jordan. He was known for his recitations, particularly in the Hafs ‘an Asim narration. Digital Qur’anic archives feature numerous recordings of his recitations, and he famously recorded 400 radio episodes of Quran recitation and interpretation for Jordanian Radio, marking the beginning of his extensive scholarly career. He was recognized as a master in the sciences of interpretation, linguistics, and rhetoric, beyond just recitation. Fadl Hassan Abbas memorized the Holy Quran in his hometown by the age of ten and further memorized several scholarly texts. He pursued his higher education in Egypt, graduating from the Faculty of Fundamentals of Religion at Al-Azhar University in 1952, and later obtaining a doctorate from Al-Azhar in 1972. He studied under esteemed scholars such as Sheikh Muhammad Suleiman Al-Shandawili, Sheikh of the readers of Al-Hussein Mosque in Cairo. Throughout his life, he held various academic and religious positions. He worked in endowments in Lebanon, served as a preacher in Amman, Jordan, and was appointed as a teacher at the College of Sharia in Jordan in 1966, teaching interpretation, Hadith, monotheism, Arabic language, and Quranic recitation. He also taught in the UAE before returning to the University of Jordan, where he headed the Department of Fundamentals of Religion for a long period. He authored significant works in Quranic sciences, including “Itqan al-Burhan fi ‘Ulum al-Qur’an.” He continued to give lessons at his home and on the radio until his passing.
