Teaching Kids Good Habits Using Growth Mindset

In this episode Saleema talks to Ginny Chiu, an educator and parent who teaches young people to set goals, create routines, be organized and be independent and motivated learners...not to mention have fun! They talk about Growth Mindset, which is the foundation of Ginny’s teaching, and how parents can model this for their kids. Ginny outlines the 4 principles that guide her work with young people, and urges parents to get in the habit of using a word that only has three letters but can make all the difference in how our kids frame their abilities. My preteen has developmental disabilities. How can I talk to them about sexual health? (Part 2)

In this episode (Part 2 of 2), Saleema talks to Jessica Wollen, a sexual health educator specializing in teaching kids (and their adults) with disabilities. How can I talk to my preteen about gender identity and sexual attraction?

How we express our gender is part of our identity. There are so many words we can use to describe our gender identity. For example, people may identify as cisgender, transgender, non-binary, gender fluid or agender to name just a few. How can parents explain exactly what gender identity is to their kids? Even when kids are familiar with these terms they may confuse gender identity and sexual orientation. How are they different? Ho do we define “queer” today? What about the term “intersex”? Hi there! I’m Saleema Noon. I'm a sexual health and empowerment educator based in Vancouver, Canada. Welcome to Growing Up Game Plan: The Podcast. Growing Up Game Plan is a six week online masterclass for preteens on being more confident, more prepared and less stressed as they navigate life. We created this podcast to support you parents to do the same. You're in the right place if you want to understand what preteens struggle with, you want to be proactive and stay one step ahead of teen angst, you want to have (or keep having) meaningful conversations with your preteen about growing up, and you’re looking for concrete, easy-to-implement tips on what to say and do. We don’t have all the answers, but we want to support you in all of these goals. Parenting preteens is no joke and sometimes you just gotta call in for back up. That’s us! So let’s do this.
