What If You've Been Underestimating Yourself?

What if you've been underestimating yourself?  Sometimes a lack of confidence isn't really about what we're capable of — it's about the beliefs we've developed about ourselves. In this episode, James Taylor shares a true story from his early days in the police that changed his career and reveals a powerful way to think about self-belief, confidence and the doors we open — and close — in our lives. When I was a young probationer, I had no intention of becoming a detective. Then, during a CID attachment, a frustrating prisoner interview and one simple lesson from an experienced detective changed the way I looked at the situation — and ultimately changed the direction of my career. The lesson involved a corridor. A corridor with doors. And that simple image has stayed with me ever since. Because perhaps we all carry a corridor like that inside ourselves. Behind some doors are possibilities, opportunities and versions of ourselves we haven't yet discovered. But behind others are old beliefs: “You can't.” “You're not good enough.” “It's too late.” “That's not for people like you.” Sometimes the doors we need to open are the ones we've been afraid to approach. And sometimes the doors we need to close are the ones carrying old beliefs that no longer serve us. The question is: How do you know what's behind a door you've never opened? In this episode, I explore: Why we can underestimate our own abilitiesHow past experiences can influence self-beliefThe difference between feeling incapable and actually being incapableWhy confidence doesn't always have to come before actionHow experience can create evidence that changes what we believe about ourselvesThe importance of questioning the beliefs we've carried for yearsWhy some doors need to be opened — while others need to be closedWhat the words “You Can't” might represent in our own livesHow curiosity can sometimes be more useful than trying to force ourselves to feel confidentWhy you don't need to see the whole path before taking the next step You don't have to open every door. But perhaps there's one you've already decided is locked. Maybe it's time to investigate. 💬 Would you like to talk about what's holding you back? If you're struggling with low confidence, self-doubt, low self-esteem, anxiety, feeling stuck or uncertainty about your direction in life, you don't have to work everything out on your own. I offer a free 30-minute consultation where we can talk about what's happening for you, what you'd like to change, and whether working together could help. I Moved to Cumbria and Everything Changed | A Therapist’s Life Reset in the Lake District

I Moved to Cumbria, and Everything Changed | A Therapist’s Life Reset in the Lake District After a long break since November 2025, I’m finally back behind the mic — and a lot has changed. In August, I made a big life move from Kent to Cumbria, settling in the heart of the Lake District — a place I’ve dreamed of living in since I was a child. In this episode, I share what that transition has really been like. Not just the practical side of moving somewhere new where you don’t know anyone… but the deeper lessons it’s taught me as a therapist, a coach, and as a person navigating change. From walking new paths using the HiiKER walking app, to unexpectedly powerful moments like cleaning years of dirt from my driveway with a pressure washer — this episode is full of simple, real-life metaphors for growth, clarity, and starting again. It’s also a reminder that some dreams take time.In my case, 44 years. As a boy, I promised myself I’d one day live in the Lake District — and now, at 54, that promise has become reality. This episode explores the idea of gestation periods, patience, and trusting that not everything has to happen quickly to be meaningful. If you’re going through change, feeling stuck, or waiting for the “right time” to move forward, this conversation will resonate with you. Because sometimes, growth isn’t about having the full map —it’s about taking the next step and allowing the path to reveal itself. 🌱 In this episode, we explore: Moving to Cumbria and adapting to a completely new environmentLife in the Lake District — slower pace, nature, and perspectiveHow a therapist navigates uncertainty and changeThe power of small steps (and why you don’t need the whole plan)Letting go of what’s built up over time (the “pressure washer” metaphor)Why some goals take years — and why that’s okay🎯 Ready to Take Your Next Step? If this episode resonates with you, and you’re thinking about making a change in your own life, whether that’s gaining clarity, building confidence, or moving forward from something that’s been holding you back. 👉 I offer a free 30-minute consultation where we can explore exactly where you are and what your next step could look like. You’ll find the booking link HERE.   No pressure. Just a conversation. 🌄 Closing Thought Sometimes the biggest changes in life don’t come from having everything figured out…They come from taking one step in a new direction — and trusting the rest will follow.
