174: The Dream I Hid for 8 Years

In 2018, I told my husband I wanted to write a book. We were alone on a hike in Singapore. My hands were shaking. I could barely say it out loud to the person who loved me most. Then came the questions. Who am I to write a book? What would I even say? What if people read it and decide I’m wrong about my own life? I didn’t go home and start writing. Life was messy. I kept coaching women, studying human behavior, building my work, and living through experiences I hadn’t yet learned how to put into words. I also wrote chapters for three anthologies. Each one gave me a little more evidence that I could share my story. Now my solo book, UNBLOCKED, is coming out. I thought the hardest part would be writing it. Turns out, I could have edited it forever. There was always one more sentence to fix and one more story to soften. At some point, editing became a way to hide. In this episode, I’m sharing what happened between that shaky conversation in 2018 and the decision to let the book go. I talk about the old identity I carried into a new life, the fear of being seen, and why you don’t have to feel like the woman who can hold your dream before you take one step toward it. I also share how UNBLOCKED and The Unblocked Integration Journal work together. The book helps you see your patterns. The journal helps you practice choosing differently. In this episode: Why it took me eight years to write the book I wanted How an old identity can keep running a life that has already changed What writing for three anthologies taught me about using my voice How I caught myself using perfectionism to delay being seen One question to ask when a dream still scares you Before you finish listening, name the thing you keep talking yourself out of. Notice what shows up right after you say it. You don’t have to make the fear disappear. What’s one response you could take that would give you evidence you can hold what you want? UNBLOCKED comes out October 6. If you named your dream while listening, DM me. I would love to hear it. 173: What If You Just Asked? The Scary Ask That Could Change Your Life with Patty Aubery

How many times have you talked yourself out of asking for what you wanted because you were already convinced the answer would be no? You decided you weren’t ready. You told yourself you hadn’t earned it. You assumed someone would notice your work and offer you the opportunity without you ever having to say a word. Look, I get it. Speaking up can feel terrifying, especially when you’ve spent years being the woman behind the scenes. In this episode of The Unblocked Woman, I’m talking with Patty Aubery, a powerhouse speaker, bestselling author, and transformational coach who knows exactly what it means to stop hiding and give yourself permission to be seen. Patty began her career as a secretary for Jack Canfield. Within months, she had reorganized the business and named herself vice president of operations. She later became president of the company and spent decades helping build Chicken Soup for the Soul into a billion-dollar brand. She co-authored 14 Chicken Soup for the Soul books, including three New York Times bestsellers. One of her books had one million copies in its first print run. But none of it would have happened if Patty hadn’t made one big, scary ask. That’s what hit me during this conversation. The opportunity that feels enormous to you may not feel enormous to the person receiving the request. Sometimes, the rejection you’re trying to avoid hasn’t even happened. You simply removed yourself from the room before anyone else could answer. Patty also opens up about the years she spent helping other people become visible while staying safely behind the scenes herself. Her mother’s final words changed that: “I did not raise a daughter to be invisible.” Today, Patty helps women show up, speak up, and be seen. She brings real strategy, decades of experience, hard-earned wisdom, and the loving kick in the pants we sometimes need. In this episode, we talk about: The bold decision that changed Patty’s career What it took to build Chicken Soup for the Soul before the success arrived Why women take themselves out of the game before anyone says no The hidden cost of waiting for people to recognize your value Why copying someone else’s success can leave your work feeling flat The difference between buying another strategy and becoming the woman who can carry the vision Why asking for help gives someone else the opportunity to contribute What it really means to tell the truth faster Being an unblocked woman doesn’t mean fear disappears. It means you stop letting fear make every decision. Do the scary thing. Make the ask. Say what you actually want. The answer might change your life. About Patty Patty Aubery is a powerhouse speaker, bestselling author, and transformational coach. She spent decades behind the scenes helping build Chicken Soup for the Soul into a billion-dollar brand. She co-authored multiple New York Times bestsellers and helped shape a movement that reached millions of people. Today, Patty helps women stop hiding, start speaking, and give themselves full permission to be seen, heard, and fully expressed. Her work combines practical strategy, hard-earned wisdom, and honest encouragement for women ready to rewrite their stories and step into leadership. 172: Why You Keep Becoming The Same Version of You

You can know better and still keep doing the same thing. You can know you need to set the boundary and still say yes. Know you don’t need another opinion and still ask five people. Know you’re capable and still overthink the decision. Know you need support and still insist on doing everything yourself. Why? Because knowing better and being patterned differently are two completely different things. In this episode, I’m breaking down The Loop™—the identity pattern that explains why we can keep recreating familiar results even when we consciously want something different. I’ll walk you through: The Loop™: Experience → Meaning → Response → Result → Reinforcement How The Default Loop™ keeps reinforcing who you’ve learned to be How The Aligned Loop™ helps you create evidence for who you’re becoming Why your identity influences the meaning you give an experience The “See? I knew it” moment that quietly reinforces old patterns Why changing your identity takes more than positive thinking or affirmations How to interrupt the Loop without needing to fully believe the new identity yet Real-life examples around self-trust, people-pleasing, boundaries, visibility, business, perfectionism, receiving, and success The one question that can help you catch the pattern in real time: Which identity is running the Loop? Here’s the biggest thing I want you to take from this episode: The woman you’re becoming needs evidence, not just affirmations. Every time you choose an aligned response—even while the old fear, guilt, or uncertainty is still there—you create another piece of evidence for who you’re becoming. You don’t have to change everything at once. See the Loop. Interrupt the Loop. Align the Loop. One rep at a time. 171: You Didn’t Choose This. But You Choose What Happens Next.

There are things in life you never would have chosen. The betrayal. The divorce. The diagnosis. The loss. The way someone treated you. The decision someone else made that changed the direction of your life. Taking responsibility for your life does not mean taking responsibility for everything that has happened to you. Some things were unfair. Some things hurt deeply. Some things changed your life through no choice of your own. But eventually, there is another question. What am I going to do now? In this episode, I’m sharing a conversation I had with one of my oldest friends that made me think differently about responsibility, patterns, and personal power. Two people can go through hard things and tell themselves completely different stories about what those experiences mean. One story says, “Look at what I’ve survived. Look at what I’ve learned. What can I choose from here?” Another says, “Why does this always happen to me?” Neither erases what happened. But the story you repeat can begin shaping the choices you make next. That is where patterns start. Choice becomes repetition. Repetition becomes pattern. Patterns, when practiced long enough, can start to feel like identity. And eventually, you can stop realizing you are choosing any of it at all. This is why awareness matters so much. The second you can see the pattern, you reopen the possibility of choice. This episode is not about pretending everything happens for a reason. It is not about blaming yourself for what someone else did. It is about asking a different question: What is actually mine now? Your boundary. Your response. Your standards. The help you ask for. The truth you finally admit. Your next decision. Sometimes taking your power back is not a huge, dramatic move. It might be telling someone you are not okay. It might be asking for help. It might be choosing not to send the text you know you will regret tomorrow. It might be saying, “I have no freaking idea what I’m doing, but I know I can’t keep doing this.” That still counts. In this episode, I talk about: • The difference between blame and responsibility • How repeated choices become patterns • Why awareness gives you access to choice again • What it means to identify what is actually yours • How to stop letting an old pattern choose for you • Why small choices still build personal power • The question that helped me through some of my hardest moments I also walk you through a simple exercise. Make two columns. On one side, write: What isn’t mine to control. On the other: What is mine to choose. You cannot control what someone says about you. You can choose whether you engage. You cannot control whether someone understands you. You can choose how you show up. You cannot change what happened five years ago. You can notice what you are allowing today because of it. Then ask yourself: What pattern wants to choose for me here? What am I choosing that keeps creating more of what I say I don’t want? What choice will I respect a year from now? You do not have to solve your entire life today. Find the choice that is actually available to you today. A Line to Sit With: “I may not have chosen how I got here, but I am here, and I don’t have to keep choosing what keeps me here.” Your life is not only the sum of what has happened to you. It is also the sum of what you choose in response. You may not get to choose every circumstance. But you still get to choose who you become inside of it. 170: How to Trust Yourself More Than Other People’s Opinions with Rosie Milsom

You know what you want to do. Then five minutes later, you’re asking three people what they think, running it through ChatGPT again, second-guessing the decision, and trying to find some kind of guarantee that you’re making the “right” choice. That’s the pattern we’re talking about in this episode. I’m joined by Rosie Milsom, Self-Worth & Success Coach and host of the Self-Worth School podcast, for a conversation about self-worth, self-trust, and why so many women have learned to trust outside opinions more than their own voice. Rosie shares how her own journey through infertility, IVF, personal development, and eventually coaching led her to recognize something she kept seeing again and again. Underneath so many of the things keeping women stuck was the belief that they weren’t good enough. And that belief doesn’t always look obvious. Sometimes it looks like asking everyone else what they think before you make a decision. Sometimes it looks like overthinking something you already know. Sometimes it looks like waiting for certainty before you move. Sometimes it even looks like using AI, coaches, friends, or family to make a decision that deep down, you already know how to make. We talk about why self-trust isn’t about always getting it right. It’s knowing that even if you make the wrong decision, you can handle what happens next. Rosie also shares why every time you ignore your intuition and look outside yourself for confirmation, you reinforce the belief that your own voice can’t be trusted. That’s where the loop begins. And breaking it starts with choosing yourself again. In this episode, we talk about: Why so many women struggle with feeling good enough How childhood experiences and social conditioning shape self-worth Why knowing what you want isn’t the same as trusting yourself enough to act on it The ways women unknowingly outsource their decisions How overthinking can become an attempt to create certainty Why certainty isn’t required before taking action The connection between self-worth and self-trust How ignoring your intuition weakens your trust in yourself Why following through builds confidence Using mistakes as information instead of evidence against yourself How optimism can be learned and strengthened What it really means to become an Unblocked Woman A line to sit with:“Self-trust is a choice. It’s a choice that you have to make over and over again.” Every time you follow through, keep your word to yourself, or choose your own voice over someone else’s opinion, you’re building your self-trust. One decision at a time. About Rosie Milsom Rosie Milsom is a Self-Worth & Success Coach and host of the Self-Worth School podcast. She helps purpose-led women stop second-guessing themselves, trust their own voice, and take the actions that move their lives and businesses forward. Combining neuroscience, psychology, and practical coaching, Rosie is passionate about helping women bridge the gap between knowing what to do and having the self-worth to actually do it. 169: Why You Can't See Your Own Pattern (and what actually let's you)

You know that moment when you finally come out of a spiral and think, What the hell was I doing? You can see it afterward. The overthinking. The people pleasing. The controlling. The text you rewrote five times. The yes you gave when you wanted to say no. The decision you almost changed because one uncomfortable moment made you question everything. But while you were in it? It felt completely reasonable. That’s the conversation in this episode. I’m talking about the patterns that are hardest to change because they don’t actually feel like patterns when they’re happening. They feel like logic. They feel like instinct. Sometimes they even sound like wisdom. I just need more information. I don’t want to disappoint anyone. I’m being realistic. I know how this needs to be done. Look... sometimes those things are true. And sometimes your old pattern has simply gotten really good at making its case. In This Episode, I Talk About: Why your patterns can feel completely reasonable while they’re running you How old patterns can disguise themselves as logic, instinct, or wisdom Why smart, self-aware women can still miss what’s happening in real time The clues that help you spot a pattern faster Why repeated situations matter, even when the people or circumstances change What defensiveness can reveal about what you’re protecting Why some patterns once made sense for your survival, belonging, or approval How curiosity helps you see what shame never will Why catching a pattern sooner is still real growth How The Mirror helps reflect back what you can’t always see on your own The goal isn’t to become a woman who never gets triggered, never overthinks, or never falls into an old response again. The goal is to recognize what’s happening sooner. To catch yourself before the pattern gets to make the next decision for you. Pay attention to the reaction that feels way bigger than the moment. Notice the situations that keep changing characters but somehow end with the same result. Listen for the behavior you immediately need to defend. Look at what keeps costing you peace, time, money, energy, relationships, or trust in yourself. That’s where the pattern usually leaves clues. And instead of immediately asking, Why am I like this? Try asking: What is this trying to do for me? That question changes the entire conversation. Some of the things you’re frustrated with today once helped you belong, stay safe, avoid disappointment, earn approval, or protect yourself. You don’t need to excuse the pattern. You need to see it clearly enough to choose something different. And if you’re catching it faster than you used to, don’t dismiss that. Three weeks becoming three days matters. Six months becoming six days matters. Typing the reactive text and deleting it matters. That is how identity changes. Not through one giant breakthrough. Through the moment you realize, Oh. I know what this is. And choose differently. A Few Questions to Sit With: What keeps happening? What do I make it mean? What do I automatically do next? What is that response costing me? What might I be trying to protect myself from? You don’t need the perfect answer. You need enough awareness to create a choice. Go Deeper If you keep thinking, I know I have patterns, but I genuinely can’t see mine, this is exactly why I created The Mirror. Bring it the real situation. The argument. The money spiral. The boundary you keep avoiding. The thing you keep doing even though you swear you won’t do it again. Sometimes what looks like five separate problems is one pattern wearing five different outfits. 168: Who Are You — And Who Did You Learn to Become

There’s a big difference between knowing your pattern and actually changing it. In this episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on why I created The Mirror™, but more importantly, I’m talking about the deeper question underneath it all: Why do we keep repeating behaviors we already know aren’t serving us? Most women don’t have an information problem. We know when we’re overthinking. We know when we’re people pleasing. We know when we’re procrastinating, abandoning a decision, or doing the exact thing we promised ourselves we wouldn’t do again. Knowing isn’t always enough. There’s usually a pattern underneath the behavior. Until you understand what’s driving that pattern, changing the circumstances won’t necessarily change the result. A new offer can carry the same self-doubt. A new relationship can activate the same fear. A new goal can bring the same old reaction. Your circumstances can change completely while your patterns stay exactly the same. I also share why I use the Enneagram, Human Design, and identity work together. Not to give you another label to live inside, but to create more context around the way you think, react, make decisions, protect yourself, and move through the world. Because one of the most powerful questions we can ask is: What is actually me, and what did I learn to become? The responsible one. The successful one. The easy one. The strong one. The woman who never needs anything. The woman who fixes everything. At some point, those identities can stop feeling like who you are and start feeling like armor. Growth isn’t always about becoming someone new. Sometimes it’s about separating who you are from who you learned you had to be. In this episode, I talk about: Why awareness alone doesn’t automatically change a pattern The difference between behavior and the motivation underneath it How the default identity loop reinforces what you already believe about yourself Why uncertainty can trigger self-distrust How the Enneagram helps uncover the strategy behind your behavior How Human Design gives another lens into the way you naturally operate The identities women adopt for love, approval, safety, and success Why self-awareness should create more freedom, not another box How to catch a pattern while it’s actually happening What real growth looks like when triggers and old reactions still show up How awareness, alignment, and abundance work together Why I created The Mirror™ as a real-time tool for deeper self-trust A question to sit with: Is this response aligned with who I’m becoming, or is it familiar because of who I’ve been? You don’t need to judge the pattern. You need to see it early enough to choose. The Mirror™ was built to help you see what’s happening underneath the surface while you’re actually in it. Bring the decision you’re overthinking. The conversation you’re avoiding. The reaction that feels bigger than the circumstance. The pattern you’re ready to understand differently. Your first 3 sessions are completely free. If you don’t know your Enneagram or Human Design, you can also take both quizzes for free inside The Mirror. 167: The Shortcut To Happiness

What if feeling better isn’t always about doing more for yourself? In this episode, I talk about something we often overlook in a culture that constantly tells us to work on ourselves, optimize ourselves, and keep becoming more. Sometimes, the shift we need comes from looking outward. I talk about the connection between joy, service, and real human presence. I also share why being connected online is not always the same as feeling truly connected in your life. I reflect on the small ways we can show up for the people around us. A visit. A thoughtful gesture. A phone call. A few intentional minutes with someone who matters. I also share a personal story from my life that changed the way I think about service. That experience reminded me that helping someone else does not always deplete us. Sometimes, it fills us in ways we did not expect. I take you behind the scenes of a very full day in my own life too. Instead of pushing meaningful gestures to the bottom of my list, I made space for them earlier. What happened surprised me. My schedule did not fall apart. I felt lighter. More connected. More present. This episode is not about adding another responsibility to your life. It is about remembering what makes life feel meaningful in the first place. What You’ll Hear Why more self-focus does not always create more happiness How meaningful connection can shift the way you feel Why real presence matters in a digitally connected world What service can look like without over giving A personal story that shaped the way I see connection Why small acts often matter more than grand gestures What happened when I prioritized people inside an already full day How to create more connection without making your life more complicated Sometimes, the thing that brings you back to yourself is the way you show up for someone else.
