The Seven Types of Pharisees, Chris' Surgery and Jesus' Questions, and Operatsye (Episode #257)

🎙️ Jew & Gentile Podcast — Episode Notes In this episode of The Jew and Gentile Podcast, Chris and Steve explore the Talmud’s fascinating—and often humorous—description of the Seven Types of Pharisees. Six represent outward, hypocritical religion: displaying good deeds for attention, delaying obedience with pious excuses, performing exaggerated acts of modesty, keeping score with God, or serving Him only out of fear. The seventh, however, is the God-loving Pharisee—someone whose obedience flows from sincere faith and genuine love for God. Chris and Steve also examine several thought-provoking questions Jesus asked in the Gospels, including, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” and “Why are you so afraid?” The conversation then turns to modern antisemitism and the dangerous stereotype that Jewish people cannot experience hatred or discrimination because they are supposedly wealthy. Rep. Becca Balint recently recalled an unnamed congressional colleague dismissing antisemitism by claiming that “all the Jews are rich”—a statement that exposes how ancient prejudices continue to appear in modern political life. Finally, learn the Yiddish word of the day: אָפּעראַציע (operatsye), meaning “surgery,” along with כירורגיע (khirurgye), the Yiddish term for the medical practice or field of surgery. God Bless America in Yiddish, Eternal Redemption, US - Israel - Iran Update, and Kleider (Episode #256)

🎙️ Jew & Gentile Podcast — Episode Notes In this episode of The Jew and Gentile Podcast, Chris and Steve continue their journey tracing the theme of blood throughout Scripture, moving from the cross to the throne room of heaven. They explore how Revelation presents the shed blood of Jesus not as something forgotten after salvation, but as the eternal song of heaven: “You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood.” From Revelation 5:9 to Revelation 12:11, Chris and Steve show how the blood of the Lamb remains central to worship, redemption, and spiritual victory. The conversation also turns to the lasting glory of the Lamb in eternity, where the marks of redemption are never erased and the work of Christ is forever remembered. Along the way, Chris and Steve discuss how believers overcome by “the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony,” reminding listeners that Christ’s sacrifice is not only the foundation of salvation but the believer’s ongoing victory. Heimish Humor, From the Last Supper to the Pool of Siloam, Ark of the Covenant Found, and Kashe (Episode #255)

🎙️ Jew & Gentile Podcast — Episode Notes This episode of the Jew and Gentile Podcast Chris and Steve open with a lighter, cultural segment celebrating "Heimish" humor and food culture, including a look at a video on making cholent and kishka, alongside updates on FOI's Equip program — new Become an Equipper resources, free stickers ("Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem," "I Love Israel," "God Bless Israel," "Israel Forever"), and two upcoming Equip classes: Dr. Will Varner teaching "Matthew: The Most Jewish Gospel" (July 9 & 16) and Dr. Peter Goeman teaching "Is the Church the 'New Israel'?" (September 3, 10, 17). The hosts then transition into current events, covering a possible archaeological discovery tied to the Ark of the Covenant, a video on the Pool of Siloam, and a segment addressing the perennial question of why American Jews tend to vote left politically. The heart of the episode is a teaching installment in the ongoing series "The Shedding of Blood: From Genesis to Revelation," anchored in Leviticus 17:11 and the truth that "the life of the flesh is in the blood." Tracing the theme of blood through Scripture, the discussion moves from Christ's blood at the Last Supper (Matthew 26:28) inaugurating the New Covenant, through the cross as the final sacrifice, to Hebrews 9–10's argument for the superiority of Christ's once-for-all sacrifice over temporal animal offerings. It then follows blood's significance into the church age (Acts 20:28, Romans 5:9, Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:20, 1 Peter 1:18–19) as the basis of justification, redemption, reconciliation, and purchase, and finally into eschatology — blood in heaven's worship (Revelation 5:9), in the believer's spiritual victory (Revelation 12:11), and in the eternal glory of the Lamb (Revelation 7:14; 19:13; 21–22). The episode closes with the Yiddish Word of the Week segment, unpacking three Yiddish words for "question" — frage (an everyday question), kashe (a philosophical or tricky question, as in the Passover Four Questions), and shayle (a question of Jewish law posed to a rabbi).   Matthew: The Most Jewish Gospel Teacher: Dr. Will Varner 📆 JULY 9, 16 What it’s about: Thinking about studying Matthew? Trump's Iran Deal: A Win for Tehran, A Worry for Jerusalem?, The Bible Runs Red, and Hock a Chinik (Episode #253)

🎙️ Jew & Gentile Podcast — Episode Notes In this episode of the Jew and Gentile Podcast, Chris Katulka and Steve Herzig share Dr. Tim Sigler upcoming FOI Equip class "When Your Jewish Friend Believes," before launching into the new teaching series, "The Shedding of Blood: From Genesis to Revelation." Anchored in Leviticus 17:11 ("it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul"), the episode traces blood as a thread running through all of Scripture, from Eden and the blood of Abel, through the covenants with Noah and Abraham, to the Passover blood on the doorposts that delivered Israel from judgment. The discussion continues through the blood sprinkled at Sinai that sealed Israel's covenant relationship with God, the Levitical sacrificial system in the tabernacle that underscored the seriousness of sin, and finally the Day of Atonement, when the high priest could only enter the Holy of Holies by means of blood. The classic hymn "Power in the Blood" by Lewis E. Jones is referenced as a musical reminder of the redeeming power of Christ's blood. Alongside the theological teaching, the episode features a look at Trump’s MOU and its usual mix of culture and current events: a YouTube clip of Matthew McConaughey sharing his favorite Bible verse, and The Yiddish Word of the Day, "hock a chinik" (literally "don't knock a teakettle at me"), figuratively means "stop bothering me" or "stop talking nonsense." The episode wraps up with mentions of the Equip program and the free sticker giveaway, featuring phrases like "Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem" and "Israel Forever." Picture an old teakettle rattling and clanging on the stove, going on and on with no signs of stopping — that's exactly the image. Figuratively, it means "stop bothering me," "stop talking nonsense," or "you're driving me crazy with all this noise."   So next time someone won't stop nagging you about something pointless, you can just say, "Okay, okay — stop hocking me a chinik!" The Flying Pastor, Trump's Faith, and the Blood That Speaks, and Blut (Episode 252)

🎙️ Jew & Gentile Podcast — Episode Notes In this episode of the Jew and Gentile Podcast, Chris Katulka kicks things off with a viral moment making the rounds — a pastor literally flying down to the stage to declare to his congregation, "Every eye will see Him," a dramatic illustration of Christ's return from Revelation 1:7. From there, Chris shares a fascinating excerpt from JD Vance's book about a candid moment with Donald Trump, who reportedly said, "I want to try and get to heaven, if possible — I'm hearing I'm not doing well," prompting Vance to reflect on Trump's personal relationship with God. The episode also touches on sobering news from Israel, including 157 people killed on Israeli roads, renewed fighting in the north and how citizens there are coping, a celebrated Jewish bakery in Berlin closing due to antisemitic harassment since October 7, and an encouraging story of 60,000 people — Christians, Persians, Hindus, and many others — showing up in Toronto for a record-breaking pro-Israel march. On a lighter note, Jewish rapper Kosha Dillz is going viral celebrating New York Knicks mania with his music video "Parade," filmed right in the middle of NBA Finals fever sweeping NYC's Jewish community. The heart of this episode launches a brand-new series titled The Shedding of Blood: From Genesis to Revelation — because as Chris puts it, the Bible runs red with blood. Anchored in Leviticus 17:11, which declares that the life of the flesh is in the blood, Chris walks listeners through the first four blood moments of Scripture: God's substitutionary covering for Adam and Eve in Eden (Genesis 3:21), Abel's blood crying out for justice from the ground (Genesis 4:10), the sanctity of human life established in the Noahic Covenant (Genesis 9:4-6), and the blood ratification of God's covenant with Abraham (Genesis 15). Along the way, Chris draws on the timeless hymn Power in the Blood by Lewis E. Jones to frame the theological weight of what blood means — life, sacrifice, atonement, covenant, and redemption. Next week the series continues with Passover, Sinai, the Tabernacle, and the Day of Atonement. Don't forget to grab your free Israel stickers at FOI's website, and tune in June 25th when Dr. Tim Sigler joins the podcast for When Your Jewish Friend Believes. Thine Is the Kingdom — But First, What's a Mummer, Population Decline, and Malkhes? (Episode 251)

🎙️ Jew & Gentile Podcast — Episode Notes This week on the Jew and Gentile Podcast, Chris kicks things off with a question you never thought you'd hear on a Jewish ministry show — what is a Mummer? If you're not from Philadelphia, you might not know that the Mummers are one of America's oldest folk traditions, but this year they showed up to march in New York's Israel Day Parade — sequins, feathers, and all — showing solidarity with Israel on the streets of Manhattan. Only in America. From there, Chris shares updates on FOI Equip and what it means to become an Equipper, and highlights the free Israel stickers available right now — Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem, I Love Israel, God Bless Israel, and Israel Forever. Links are in the show notes. There's a lot happening this week every follower of Jesus needs to hear. A Jewish man named Daniel Grand is fighting all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court after being told he needed a permit to host a prayer gathering in his own home. A Washington Nationals executive was fired after video surfaced showing he blackballed pitcher Trevor Williams from social media promotions because of his Christian faith. Antisemitism is still rearing its ugly head on New York City subways. And for the first time since the Bubonic Plague, the world is facing population decline — except Israel, where four children is the new two. That's not an accident, that's covenant. Which brings us to this — Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. Put that together with Revelation 19 and what do you get? The King is coming, and every thread of history — every courtroom, every parade, every baby born in Israel — converges on His eternal reign. The Yiddish word for kingdom this week is malkhes. And one day, that kingdom will be undeniable. Thine is the kingdom. Forever. Amen. When Your Jewish Friend Believes Teacher: Dr. Tim Sigler 📆 JUNE 25 What it’s about: You can hardly believe it—your Jewish friend has come to faith in Jesus as Messiah! But what comes next? Now if that word sounds familiar, it should, because it's borrowed straight from Hebrew. In Yiddish, malkhes carries the idea of a reign, a realm, a dominion — not just a place, but a rule. And when Jesus taught His disciples to pray "Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen" — that word kingdom is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Put it together with Revelation 19 and the picture gets breathtaking. The King rides in, every nation bows, and what was prayed for centuries becomes reality. Malkhes — His kingdom. Forever. Menschification, Deliver Us from the Evil One, Israelis UNWELCOMED at a California Hotel, and Farhern (Episode #250)

🎙️ Jew & Gentile Podcast — Episode Notes Chris and Steve open the episode with a scholarly angle — the Apostle Paul and what it truly means to be a mensch, connecting righteousness to that deeply Jewish concept of being a person of integrity and good character. They celebrate the incredible news out of Jacksonville, Florida, where Church Eleven22 baptized 2,552 people at their annual beach baptism at Hanna Park — up from nearly 2,000 the year before. The guys tie this to what they're calling "Israel's Altar Call," and highlight FOI's upcoming June 25th episode featuring Dr. Tim Sigler on "When Your Jewish Friend Believes," along with the free Israel stickers initiative and the call to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. The theological heart of the episode unpacks the Lord's Prayer — specifically "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." Chris and Steve work through the tension between James 1:13 (God does not tempt us to sin) and Matthew 4:1 (Jesus led by the Spirit into the desert to be tested), landing on the idea that testing can reveal what's in our hearts, fortify our will, and make us an example to other believers. On the news front, they cover Israel pushing deeper into Lebanon beyond the ceasefire line in response to Hezbollah drone attacks, the IDF's 78th anniversary, Elizabeth Pipko's honest reflections on fear and antisemitism in America, a Brooklyn co-op boycott vote, and the political fallout surrounding a Democrat who called for Zionists to be imprisoned. The Yiddish Word of the Week: farhern — to examine, quiz, or test.   When Your Jewish Friend Believes Teacher: Dr. Tim Sigler 📆 JUNE 25 What it’s about: You can hardly believe it—your Jewish friend has come to faith in Jesus as Messiah! But what comes next? In this class, Dr. Tim Sigler joins Jewish believers Steve Herzig and Lorna Simcox to help us think biblically and lovingly about the next steps. Together, they explore how to welcome a new Jewish believer into your congregation, how Jewish followers of Jesus relate to the Law, and how Messianic congregations factor into the conversation. If God were to bring your Jewish friends to faith tomorrow, would you be ready? Join us as we prepare to respond with wisdom, clarity, and love. In the old Jewish world, farhern was the word used when a rabbi would quiz his students on their Torah portions — a sacred kind of testing meant to reveal what had truly been learned. It's the perfect word for this week's episode, because as Chris and Steve unpacked from the Lord's Prayer, not all testing is punishment. Sometimes God's farhern is the very thing that reveals the faith already growing inside us. 🎧 Subscribe, Share & Support Listen wherever you get your podcasts: 🎧 Apple Podcasts | Spotify | YouTube 🌐 https://jewandgentile.org 💬 Free Pro-Israel Stickers Show your support for Israel with FOI’s free pro-Israel stickers 🇮🇱 📲 Text 424-444-1948 to get yours today!   ☕ MUG-ON-A-MUG Sip your coffee with some serious Jewish-ministry vibes ☕ With a gift of $10 or more to FOI Equip, you’ll receive your very own Jew & Gentile Podcast Mug-on-a-Mug! 💬 Oy—look at Steve’s punim!
