    In this weeks Headlines Unspun we’re looking at how media spin can platform specific voices and their perspectives but also carefully curate an audience based on perspectives and not content. We start with a Woke Report - a simple headline from the Post using a term that incites blood clots and high blood pressure in a certain group within society. A coverall term that means one thing to one group of people and leads to derision and belittling from another - and how does a specific MP fit into the whole thing? That’s followed up by the framing of a new plan to reduce family harm incidents - only the word new here is used when maybe it shouldn’t be.     Carjacking, Act Platforming and Righteous Anger : Headlines Unspun #1

    It doesn’t take long for media to fall in line with political rhetoric - and even if they’re showing opposition or raising issues with the way a Government is doing things, media can still find ways to back them up as well in the way they present news stories. Youth Offending Bootcamps is a Prime example. The research show they are bad and ineffective. Our history shows they are pipelines to abuse and more criminality. But one way media can create a public support wave for them is to continue to vilify those youths in the camp who don’t conform to expectations for the government that they will suddenly become model citizens. Two headlines in this week’s episode look at how activity from Bootcamp Offenders is framed as proof of their badness. The third article is one with a very specific role we used to see a lot during waves of feminism - first in the late 1800s when women sought the vote, then again in the late 50s and 60s as new age feminism swept throughout society - it’s tone policing women. This is often used by conservative media to protect the status quo and vilify those wanting change, by belittling and demeaning a perception of tone instead of the quality of content.
