Turning Pain into Purpose: Lisa Sugarman's Journey to End the Stigma Around Mental Health and Suicide

***TRIGGER WARNING - this episode contains talk about Suicide and self harm. Please use your discretion while listening. Resources: The Trevor Project: https://www.thetrevorproject.org/ Connect with Lisa: http://www.lisasugarman.com/ Lisa Sugarman (she/her) is a Boston-based author, columnist, crisis counselor with The Trevor Project, storyteller with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), survivor of suicide loss, and a mental health advocate. Her mission is to help end the stigma surrounding suicide & mental illness by normalizing conversations about MENTAL HEALTH, SUICIDE, LOSS, and GRIEF. After learning that her father Jim took his own life (35 years after he died), she had to re-grieve his death for the second time in my life. She also needed to process this new kind of loss and come to terms with the fact that he was mentally ill and suffering in silence. Sadly, since her dad was struggling at a time when talking about mental illness was taboo, he couldn't be saved. But others can. That's why she's turned her pain into purpose by working as a crisis counselor with The Trevor Project and as a mental health advocate. Now, her purpose is to share content and spark conversations to help end the stigma of suicide. One. Story. At. A. Time. She wholeheartedly believes there's strength and healing to be found within our shared experiences, that's why she's committed to sharing her story of life after loss.

Repeatedly Dead Fred with Fred Rutman

Today, we have a tale that will leave you on the edge of your seat.  My guest, Fresh from crafting his first book "The Summer I Died Twenty Times," is  here to share his personal journey that defies the odds.  Did you know that 450,000 Americans and Canadians succumb to medical errors each year? In this episode my guest will unveil his own narrative of narrowly escaping becoming a statistic in that staggering figure. Brace yourself for a rollercoaster of emotions as he recounts 11 heart procedures in 11 years, numerous encounters with clinical death, concussions, PTSD, post-concussion syndrome, brain trauma, defective pacemakers, and surgeries gone awry.  But it doesn't stop there. Add multiple instances of cognitive medical bias and misdiagnoses to the mix – they certainly tried to put him on the permanently dead list.   In a nutshell, his upcoming book, "The Summer I Died Twenty Times," is a personal medical drama spanning from 2009 to 2018. The sequel, a work in progress, delves into the period from 2019 to the present. It's a gripping account of Fred's journey through deaths, brain trauma, recovery attempts, persistent medical errors, botched surgeries, cognitive biases, defective pacemakers, and the unwavering spirit of resilience.  Join us  as we navigate the tumultuous waters, questioning faith, and discovering the potent medicinal tool of Intermittent Fasting. It's not just about resilience; it's about refusing to let the adversities define Fred's life.  This is "Without Regret," where we unravel stories that inspire you to face challenges head-on, and emerge stronger than ever.  Resources: https://www.instagram.com/p/CWWoCIRF794
