There is a fine line between proper professionalism or protocol and lazy status quo. There is a needed balance between permission to speak freely and realizing that idea NEW TO YOU may not be a new idea at all. Respect goes a long way and is best earned not demanded - on both sides.  The thing to remember on your way up the ladder is this: whoever got there first holds significant influence over your outcome.
