James 1:1-18 Verse by Verse: Joy in Trials, Wisdom, and Temptation

James 1:1-18, verse by verse: what James means by “count it all joy,” how wisdom differs from being smart, and where temptation really comes from. Pastors Dallas and Scott Ethridge begin our journey through the book of James with the first 18 verses of chapter 1. They start with who James was writing to, then work through trials, wisdom, riches, and temptation line by line. Along the way, they take on a few questions people ask about these verses, including whether God was tempting Adam and Eve in the garden and what it looks like to ask God for something without deciding ahead of time how He should answer. We’re taking James about one chapter at a time over a couple of weeks, so this is part one of chapter 1. Next week we continue in James 1 with how we receive the word. James Introduction: Who Wrote It, When, and Who It Was For

Who wrote the book of James, when was it written, and who was it for? This introduction to the book of James starts our new verse-by-verse Bible study series. Before we read the first verse, we'll spend this episode on the background: which James wrote the letter, where it fits in the early church timeline, and what was happening to the believers who first received it. If we don't know a verse's context, we can be conned by it, so we start here. Questions we work through: Which James wrote the book of James? When was the book of James written, and why does the date matter? Who were the "twelve tribes scattered among the nations"? What problems was James trying to fix in these early churches? Why does the way James introduces himself matter? Over the next several weeks, we will take a portion of each chapter per episode, so there is more room to talk through the text.
