Speaking Up

Hello Intrepid Leaders and welcome to another episode of the Leadership Log where we talk about navigating everyday leadership. Joining me in this episode is Helene Donnelly. Helene is a registered nurse with over twenty years experience working in the NHS and Social Care. She raised concerns about the failings at Stafford Hospital (part of Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust) and she was a key witness to the Francis public inquiry that followed in 2010. Helene was awarded an OBE in 2014 for this and she has since pioneered the role of ambassador for cultural change and the concept of Freedom to Speak Up Guardians which is now embedded across NHS and independent sector healthcare organisations I am so thrilled to be have had the opportunity to sit down and have a one on one conversation with the inspirational Helene. I was in awe of her candidness and at times floored by the lived examples she shared that ultimately drove her to be the ‘skunk at the picnic’ Helene brave decision to speak up about care and behaviours she was observing and sometimes experiencing first hand allowed others to feel that they could do the same. Join us as we discuss the potential challenges of speaking up and how, collectively, speaking up in healthcare isn't just about making your voice heard—it's about making a difference. Go With The Flo - Ep3: Jonathan O'Reilly - "Doing" Quality Improvement

Hello Intrepid Leaders and welcome to episode three of Go with the Flo! In this episode I am joined by a wonderful Scots man - the incomprable Jonathan O’Reilly. Johnathan and I connected through the amazing QI Twitter community and our shared passion for all things quality improvement. Join us both as we chat about ‘doing QI’ in the real world. Episode 3: Psychological Safety

In this episode we are discussing Psychological Safety (PS) with the brilliant Tom Geraghty. Tom and Becky connect through the power of twitter and a mutual passion for understanding PS and ho we can support and enable others to measure, build and maintain a climate of PS in their teams. In this episode they explore the concept of PS from its origins through to some top tips from Tom on how to start building that climate of PS in your team Tom's Bio Tom is the CEO & founder of Iterum Ltd, powering psychsafety.com. His first job title was “Experimentalist”, which set the tone for the rest of his career. He then made the move into technology, and many subsequent years of leadership including CTO and CIO roles has made Tom passionate about DevOps, psychological safety and generative leadership. Tom now focusses on organisational transformation through safety culture. Additionally, he is the founder of psychsafety.co.uk, an online resource intended to aggregate and share current research, opinion and practices related to psychological safety. They have a newsletter and community and through psychsafety also provide psychological safety coaching, workshops, consulting and training. Outside of work, Tom spends as much time as possible outdoors, and is studying for a Masters Degree in Global Health and Humanitarianism. Episode 2: A day in the Life of ..... with Andrea Sutcliffe

Hello Intrepid Leaders and welcome to another episode of the Leadership Log where we talk about navigating everyday leadership. In this episode we are doing something a little different. We thought it would be nice to get some leaders on the show to just chat with us about a day in their life, and so here is our first episode in that format. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to have a chat with the lovely Andrea Sutcliffe, Chief Executive and Registrar of The Nursing and Midwifery Council (The NMC) Listen as Andrea shares her leadership journey to date, gives us an insight into a typical day for her and provides her perspective on some of the greatest leadership challenges for nurses and midwives at the moment Andrea's Bio Andrea joined the Nursing and Midwifery Council as Chief Executive and Registrar in January 2019. Andrea has over 35 years’ experience in health and social care, at a local and national level. Previously she was the Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care at the Care Quality Commission, Chief Executive at the Social Care Institute for Excellence and Chief Executive of the Appointments Commission. She was also an Executive Director at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for seven years from 2000 having managed services for children, women, older people and neurosciences for local organisations in London in the 1990’s. Andrea is an advocate for the positive use of social media and you can follow her as @CrouchEndTiger7 and discover her love of her cat Archie, hiking, Sunderland football club, music, theatre and film as well as her thoughts on health and social care. In this episode we are going to chatting about courageous leadership with the Bethan Davies, Co-Founder of The Bravest Path , a courage building consultancy Bethan spent the first 15 years of her career in Tech and Insurance developing and coaching leaders in- house in regional and global leadership development positions. She co-founded the Bravest Path to bring a different approach to developing individuals and organisational cultures, helping leaders take more smart risks, develop empathy, and deeply connect with their people to achieve audacious goals. They develop courage, compassion and connection through psycho-educational workshops, webinars, coaching and cultural transformation. Bethan brings a warm, empathetic, and insightful approach, focused on how clients can leverage their strengths to support their development and specialises in helping leaders be bolder, self- compassionate and authentic, letting go of perfectionism and imposter syndrome to build greater courage and confidence. Her recent work includes keynotes at NHS Trusts on “Cultivating Courage and Compassion” developing empathetic and authentic leaders through individual and cultural transformation. She is currently partnering with FNF and NHS England on national webinars aiding the retention and engagement of newly registered nurses and midwives. Bethan designed and facilitated global leadership programmes at Microsoft and BP, coaching senior leaders to develop their people leaders and top talent. She regularly facilities Braver than Before TM delivered in NHS Trusts, developing self compassion, resilience and courage in clinicians. Having lived in San Francisco and facilitated multinational programmes in 15+ countries, she enjoys working across cultures and is quick to establish inclusive, appreciative, and stretching learning environments. Go With The Flo - Ep2: Gillian Knight - An FNF Global Scholar

Hello Intrepid Leaders and welcome to episode two of Go with the Flo! In this episode we chat with the lovely Gillian Knight, Nursing Officer in the Office of the Chief Nursing Officer for Wales. Gillian shares her experience of being a Global Scholar and gives us an overview of her project. She also shares with us a little about her leadership journey and how she got interested in global nursing and policy. Find out more about the FNF Global Leadership Scholarship HERE Gill registered as a general nurse in 1994 and has held a varied range of senior nursing positions across care sectors and in the NHS primarily in cancer care including clinical practice, education, Cancer Services Coordinating Group, the Wales Cancer Network and was appointed as a Nursing Officer for Welsh Government in January 2018. Gill had worked within the Welsh NHS for over 22 years since moving to Wales from her native Ireland. She now supports the Chief Nursing Officer as a nursing officer in the Welsh Government, providing professional advice for the following policy areas: nurse regulation; nursing education and career development; workforce modernisation and development including implementation of the Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act 2016. Gill is the first Welsh FNF Global scholar. Gill has worked with a number of third sector organisations as a nurse adviser to support nursing workforce developments in Uganda. Go With The Flo - Ep1: Greta Westwood

Hello Intrepid Leaders and welcome to series two of what was formally known as the Scholar Spotlight Sessions! As you can see we have had a re-brand and a change of name!!! For this first episode we chat with the delightful Greta Westwood. Greta shares her leadership journey with us and talks about the ambitious plans of the Florence Nightingale Foundation Greta has been the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Florence Nightingale Foundation since September 2019. She joined the Foundation in 2017 as the Chief Operating Officer. Greta is a Registered Nurse and a Florence Nightingale Foundation Alumna (2012 Leadership Scholar). She was a awarded a CBE in the Queen’s 2021 New Year’s Honours for Services to Nursing and Midwifery. Greta qualified as a nurse in 1983 and a midwife in 1987. She completed an MSc in Health Psychology in 1996 and a PhD in Nursing in 2010. Greta was one of the first genetic counsellors in the UK from 1987-2007. She held a joint Clinical Academic post with the University of Southampton from 2000-2005. From 2008-2012, she established, and then led, a National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Research Network. Greta held a joint post (2012-2017) with a NHS Trust and the University of Southampton as Director of Clinical Academic Practice for the university. She led the university’s clinical academic training programme for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals and was promoted to Professor for this work.
