    Tennant Creek and the Barkly Community Meeting Puts Housing in the Spotlight

    An April community meeting about rights and responsibilities in housing sparked an invitation to Minister for Housing and local member for Barkly, Steve Edgington to the September meeting at Our Community Shed. The OCS Coordinator Lucy McGarry reported to 8CCC's Brian Coleman the outcomes of the latest meeting where about 50 people attended from the town, NT Government officials and various organisations to hear answers to the community's questions from April. Quarterly meetings were agreed going forward, in order to keep transparency and accountability around housing for Tennant Creek. The group are united in pursuing locally-centred solutions that address the problems that have been brought to light. It was also announced today until 9 November, the NT Government are asking social housing tenants, Community Housing Providers, legal and advocacy services, homelessness services, Aboriginal organisations, community representatives and other interested Territorians to comment on proposed changes to the Residential Tenancies Act 1999.     Barkly Regional Council Out of the Red

    Barkly Regional Council CEO Peter Harder dropped in to the 8CCC Tennant Creek studio to share the good news the budget is in the black for the first time in ten years. New mowers and some more bins are just some of the benefits. The launch of the free pool opening was a great success, despite hearing that the NTG will not support in funding the pool's upkeep, shade and infrastructure critical work needed.     Rowan Dally from ZAZA ZOO

    Rowan Dally from Garramilla/Darwin band ZAZA ZOO joined Baini on the Big Brekky Show to discuss their upcoming vinyl EP and launch party this weekend. The 3-piece instrumental group are throwing a warehouse party this Saturday Oct 10th to celebrate the launch of their first EP. Over the past year, the band have experimented with various genres as they dazzle audiences with incredibly tight grooves that only years of playing together can create. “I have been playing with James and Evan…maybe seven or eight years now…and they’ve been playing music together for longer than I’ve been alive...I think if you don’t have that connection and don’t know how people work together, it’s really hard…because it’s all about feel.” The EP will be released on Saturday as a vinyl record. Rowan explained that the band always intended to make this an analogue experience for the listener and to steer away from streaming platforms for as long as possible. “We made this to be a vinyl. I understand that most people might not be up on it… but it’s meant to be enjoyed that way. We went a long way to make it specifically a vinyl record.” Punters can buy the record at the launch, or message the band directly to have one delivered.     Alice Springs Ordinary Council Meeting Sep 2026 with Mayor Asta Hill

    8CCC's Kate Lyons-Dawson caught up with Mparntwe Alice Springs Mayor Asta Hill to discuss the September 2026 Ordinary Town Council meeting on Tuesday. It was a record, over six hour long sitting where much was resolved, most importantly calling on the Australian Government to list buffel grass as a Weed of National Significance, while also seeking a funded partnership with the Australian and Northern Territory governments to support its ongoing management on Council-managed land. An economic summit will also be organised to share ideas and look at how Alice Springs can capitalise on economic opportunities, approving up to $10,000 from the Elected Member Projects budget to support the summit. Expected to take up to 24 months, a comprehensive review of Council's bylaws is set to begin, looking at the local rules that help shape how we live, work and use shared spaces across Alice Springs.     Greg Barnes on the C.O.F.F.I.N. Gig

    Not long ago, Gadigal/Sydney-based band C.O.F.F.I.N. came to Bustard Town for an incredible rock show with an important cause. Gig organiser Greg Barnes joined Baini on the show to discuss Frack Me Dead, an anti-fracking rock and roll show. Greg was glowing in his praise of C.O.F.F.I.N. and the singer/drummer Ben for the efforts he has put into the anti-fracking campaign. "They really spread the message strong throughout the set, unscripted, just pure energy... The singer Ben is super well-read, and is an amazing public speaker, and did some solid messaging as well as playing the best rock and roll in Australia." Greg has been instrumental in campaigning for anti-fracking messaging with these gigs and merch drops across the NT, and implored listeners to keep the fight going against fracking organisations. "Right now companies are going in and doing test drilling. It's crunch time to be able to get it at a federal level to be able to stop this threat."     Richie 1250 on Slow Grind Fever - September 2026

    Richie 1250 joined Baini on the Big Brekky Show to talk about the upcoming Slow Grind Fever at The Black Wreath. Richie has brought Slow Grind Fever to Mparntwe for a number of years thanks to the warm reception he always receives from the locals. "People there just really love it, and I just really love coming up there. It's a very welcoming town. Some places I go, it's very hard to make connections... Every time I come up I feel very welcomed in to the community. It's great!" Slow Grind Fever is know for it's smokey, dreamlike atmosphere, acting as a veil to the crowds' carefree choreography while Richie plays some of his sultriest vinyl jams.
