Book Club | TM Logan | The Weekend

What would you do if you found a backpack containing thousands of pounds in cash? That’s the moral dilemma at the heart of T.M. Logan’s gripping psychological thriller The Weekend - a story about friendship, secrets, temptation and how quickly everything can unravel when money enters the equation. In this episode of Book Club | Michelle Ford Interviews, I’m joined by Sunday Times bestselling author T.M. Logan to talk about his latest thriller, The Weekend. Six old friends head to a converted farmhouse in the Yorkshire Dales for a New Year’s Eve weekend. During a walk, they’re caught in a storm and take shelter in an old lead mine. There, they make an extraordinary discovery: a backpack containing more money than they’ve ever seen. Of course, they know they should hand it straight to the police. But as the storm continues and the weekend unfolds, temptation starts to take hold. Each of the friends has their own problems — debt, obsession, career worries and secrets — and suddenly that seemingly simple decision becomes much more complicated. As cracks begin to appear in the friendships, The Weekend becomes a tense exploration of trust, betrayal, greed, friendship and the choices we make when we think nobody is watching. T.M. Logan is the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Holiday, The Curfew, The Catch, The Daughter, Lies and 29 Seconds. His thrillers have sold more than three million copies in the UK and have been translated into more than 20 languages. The Holiday was selected for the Richard & Judy Book Club and adapted into a four-part television drama, while The Catch was also adapted for television. In our conversation, we talk about the fascinating “what would you do?” dilemma at the centre of The Weekend, the psychology of temptation, whether we ever really know our closest friends, and why moral grey areas make such compelling thriller territory. T.M. has said that the idea was inspired partly by his fascination with the choices people make when faced with a difficult moral dilemma - and by thrillers such as Scott Smith’s A Simple Plan. The Weekend is out now in hardback, paperback, ebook and audiobook. 🎙️ About Book Club | Michelle Ford InterviewsBook Club | Michelle Ford Interviews brings you conversations with bestselling authors about their books, the stories behind them and the ideas that make us want to keep turning the pages. Book Club | Dame Stella Rimington | The Hidden Hand

📚 Dame Stella Rimington on The Hidden Hand In this very special episode of Michelle Ford Interviews, Michelle revisits her first ever Book Club conversation, recorded in January 2025 with Dame Stella Rimington, the pioneering former Director General of MI5, about her final novel, The Hidden Hand. The novel is a gripping contemporary spy thriller set partly at Oxford University, where a Chinese study centre is secretly recruiting students to steal valuable research and intellectual property. When the centre's new head discovers its sinister purpose, he turns to CIA agent Manon Tyler for help. With her extraordinary career inside MI5 - including becoming the first woman to serve as Director General - Stella brought a unique authenticity to her espionage fiction. What makes this interview particularly poignant is that Dame Stella sadly died in August 2025, aged 90, just seven months after this conversation was recorded. It is therefore a privilege to be able to share one of her final conversations, in which Michelle talks to her about writing, espionage, her remarkable career and The Hidden Hand. This interview marked the beginning of Michelle's Book Club on Brooklands Radio, where Michelle continues to chat to authors every Thursday afternoon. 🎧 Listen to the full conversation on Michelle Ford Interviews wherever you get your podcasts. Book Club | A A Dhand | The Chemist & The Kingpin

📚 A.A. Dhand on The Chemist & The Kingpin In this episode of Michelle Ford Interviews, Michelle chats to Sunday Times bestselling crime writer A.A. Dhand about his gripping Idris Khan series, The Chemist and its explosive sequel, The Kingpin. The Chemist introduces Idris Khan, a respected pharmacist in Leeds who dispenses methadone and knows far more about his patients - and the secrets they carry - than anyone might imagine. When his childhood sweetheart fails to turn up for her daily dose, Idris goes looking for her and finds himself caught in the middle of a dangerous turf war between Yorkshire drug cartels. In The Kingpin, Idris is changed by what has happened to him. When his estranged brother Zidane arrives fresh out of prison with an audacious plan to take control of the drug trade across Leeds and Bradford, Idris faces an even bigger choice: walk away or become the very thing he's always feared - the Kingpin. Michelle and Amit talk about crime, drugs, morality, family, the darker side of Yorkshire and the real-life experiences that helped inspire the novels. Having worked as a pharmacist himself, Dhand drew on what he witnessed during years working at the sharp end of community pharmacy to create the world of Idris. If you love crime fiction, psychological thrillers, gritty British crime, Yorkshire noir and fast-paced, twisty storytelling, this is one to add to your listening list. Bowel Cancer | A Doctor’s Guide to Signs You Should Never Ignore | Dr Anisha Patel

In this special bonus episode, Michelle Ford is joined by Dr Anisha Patel (@doctorsgetcancertoo), a doctor and patient advocate who shares her powerful first-hand experience of bowel cancer. "There is a global epidemic of this and it's been in the news loads. There was a huge study in The Lancet recently where 27 out of 50 countries have seen this rise in the under 50s. And Cancer Research UK actually published figures that all cancers have risen by 24% since 1995 to 2019 and bowel cancer specifically has risen by 50 % in the last 25 years, which is just shocking really." Dr Anisha Patel As we mark Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, this conversation shines a light on a growing and often overlooked issue - more younger people are being diagnosed, often without the typical risk factors. Dr Anisha talks openly about her journey to diagnosis, the realities of navigating the healthcare system as both a doctor and a patient, and why we all need to be better at listening to our bodies and 'knowing our normal'. ⚠️ Why this mattersBowel cancer is no longer just a disease affecting older people. Rates in under-50s are rising, and many are diagnosed later because symptoms can be missed or dismissed. Early detection is key - and awareness can save lives. The survival rate for bowel cancer is 90% if caught early enough. If you were born in 1990 or later your chances of getting bowel cancer have increased 4X. 🧠 What we cover in this episodeThe rise of bowel cancer in younger peopleDr Anisha’s personal story and diagnosisWhy some patients don’t fit the “typical” risk profileThe importance of being listened to - and advocating for yourselfHow lifestyle, environment, and genetics may all play a role - Dr Anisha talks about the importance of fibre in our diet 🚨 Symptoms not to ignore Dr Anisha shares the key signs to look out for and an acronym to help you remember: B - Blood in your stoolO - Obvious changes in bowel habitsW - Unexplained weight lossE - Extreme tirednessL - lumps in tummy - abdominal pain or discomfort If something doesn’t feel right and it persists - get it checked - and don't ignore that NHS poop check. It only takes a second and could make all the difference. 🎯 Key takeawayYou are never too young to know your body. Paying attention to changes and acting early can make all the difference. 🎧 Listen now to hear the full conversation and Dr Anisha’s powerful message on awareness, advocacy, and early detection. Alex Partridge | ADHD and Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria

Understanding Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria with Alex PartridgeIn this bonus episode of Two Women Chatting, Michelle speaks with Alex Partridge, host of ADHD Chatter podcast and author of Why Does Everybody Hate Me? Living and Loving with Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria. Together they explore Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) - an intense emotional response to perceived criticism or rejection that is commonly experienced by people with ADHD or autism. Alex shares personal insights into how RSD can shape relationships, self-confidence and everyday interactions. What is Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria?Alex explains that RSD is one of the most challenging aspects of living with ADHD. Even small comments or situations - like a boss asking for a quick chat - can trigger overwhelming anxiety and catastrophic thinking. These reactions are often rooted in years of criticism or misunderstanding during childhood. The Emotional ImpactFor many people, RSD can cause powerful emotional responses that feel disproportionate to the situation. Feelings of sadness, anger or panic can escalate quickly, creating a cycle of shame and regret once the emotional response has passed. Relationships and Self-PerceptionMichelle and Alex discuss how RSD can affect both personal and professional relationships. When feedback feels like a personal attack, people may react defensively or impulsively - quitting jobs, withdrawing from relationships or later apologising for emotional reactions they feel embarrassed about. The People-Pleasing TrapAlex highlights how many people with RSD develop people-pleasing behaviours in an attempt to avoid rejection. While it can feel protective in the moment, constantly prioritising other people’s needs can lead to unhealthy dynamics and difficulty setting boundaries. Women and ADHDThe conversation also touches on the unique challenges faced by women with ADHD, many of whom are diagnosed later in life. Alex emphasises the importance of giving women a stronger voice in the neurodiversity conversation, particularly around hormonal changes and how ADHD can present differently for women. Key Takeaways• Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria can trigger intense emotional reactions to perceived criticism. • These reactions can create a cycle of shame that affects relationships and self-confidence. • People-pleasing is a common coping strategy but can lead to unhealthy patterns. • Women with ADHD often face unique challenges and are frequently diagnosed later in life. Through his honesty and advocacy, Alex Partridge helps bring greater understanding to RSD and offers reassurance to anyone who has struggled with feeling overwhelmed by criticism or rejection.
