Peter - "Fear God, Honor The Emperor" - I Peter 2:13-25 - Mike Maglish

Fear God, Honor The Emperor Emperor Nero (AD 37–68) Roman Emperor | Reigned AD 54–68  • Became Emperor: AD 54 at age 16 (adopted heir of Claudius)  • Early Rule: Initially stable under advisors Seneca and Burrus  • Killed His Mother: Agrippina in AD 59 (age 21) - 1 Peter written in this time  • Great Fire of Rome: AD 64 (Nero age 26)  • First Major Christian Persecution: After the fire, Christians scapegoated and executed (Tacitus)  • Likely Context for Peter & Paul’s Martyrdom: Mid-to-late 60s  • Death: Suicide in AD 68 (age 30) after losing Senate and military suppor Legacy: Became a lasting symbol of tyrannical empire and persecution in early Christian memory. Known for his Artistic obsession, political paranoia, and increasing brutality. The political structure  1. Emperor (Princeps / Augustus / Dominus)   • Nero held ultimate authority—military, judicial, and religious.   • Could issue laws, execute citizens, control the army.   • Power was personal, not constitutional.  2. Senate   • Still existed and had prestige.   • Could advise and vote, but real power depended on the emperor’s favor.   • Senators could be executed if they displeased the emperor.  3. Assemblies   • Ancient Roman citizen assemblies still existed on paper.   • In practice, they were rubber-stamps for imperial policies.  4. Provincial governors   • Controlled provinces with local military power.   • Answered directly to the emperor. He used terror as entertainment After the Great Fire (AD 64), Nero blamed Christians and inflicted grotesque punishments. Tacitus describes:  • Christians torn apart by dogs  • Crucified many Christians  • Christians Burned alive as human torches in Nero’s gardens Even allowing for Tacitus’ bias, the persecution itself is widely accepted as real. This is depravity in the form of state-sponsored sadism. 1 Peter 2:13-16 Romans 13:1-2 The WILL of God is to do in the face of EVERYONE. 1 Peter 2:16-17 τιμάω (timaō) - Honor, Show Respect, Give Recognition (Honor Others, Honor the Emperor) ἀγαπάω (agapaō) - Show Unconditional Love φοβέομαι (phobeomai) - Fear, Deep Respect, Profound Reverence JESUS SAID IT LIKE THIS…     28 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”     —Matthew 10:28     See also - Prov 1:7, 9:10, Ecc. 12:13, 1 Peter 1:17 HONOR all men and FEAR only God. 1 Peter 2:18-21 The GOSPEL creates people who do not return EVIL for EVIL Our Example 1 Peter 22:22-25 John 19:10-11 Takeaway: Christ-Followers FEAR God and TRUST His plan. LET’S GET PRACTICAL 1) Focus on eternity - We are passing through. 2) Pray for those in authority - God allowed them to have their positions. 3) Act differently than the world - We are salt and light 4) Endure suffering - God has a plan 5) Vote - We have rights, use them. 6) Share Christ Always - Don’t be stagnant because of freedom.

    Peter - "Cornerstone—Functional or Decorative?" - I Peter 1:23-2:12 - Tim Nay

Cornerstone—Functional or Decorative?I  Peter 1:23-2:12 Tim Nay Part of 1&2 Peter: Standing firm in shifting times February 1, 2026 4 “As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” —1 Peter 2:4-7  1. Our cornerstone is functional, not decorative.  23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” —Matthew 16:23  8 “and ‘A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.’ They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. —I Peter 2:8  2. Our identity is found in knowing we are God’s chosen.  23 “since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord remains forever. And this word is the good news that was preached to you.” —I Peter 1:23-25  9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.” —1 Peter 2:9-11  3. Our actions need to align with being Christ-like.  1 “So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.” —I Peter 2:1  Actions to Realign:  • Malice: A desire to harm others.  • Deceit: Dishonesty and manipulation.  • Hypocrisy: Not being genuine.  • Envy: Resenting others’ blessings.  • Slander: Speaking evil of others.  4. Our change comes through a steady diet of the Word of God.  TAKEAWAY: You will never be disappointed aligning your life with Christ.

Peter - "Get Ready for Holiness" - I Peter 1:13-25 - Tim Nay

Get Ready for Holiness I Peter 1:13-25 Tim Nay Part of 1&2 Peter: Standing firm in shifting times January 25, 2026 13 “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” —I Peter 1:13  1. We will be mentally alert & sober.  2. We will tie up loose thoughts and desires.  5 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” —2 Corinthians 10:5  The mind has a “spirit.” In other words, our mind has what we call a “mindset.” It doesn’t just have a view, it has a viewpoint. It doesn’t just have the power to perceive and detect; it also has a posture, a demeanor, a bearing, an attitude, a bent.” — John Piper  22 “to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” —Ephesians 4:22-24  3. We will fix our hope on God’s grace.  “Your worst days are never so bad that you are beyond the reach of God’s grace. And your best days are never so good that you are beyond the need of God’s grace.” — Jerry Bridges  14 “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile.” —I Peter 1:14-17  22 “Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart.” —I Peter 1:22  4. We will be obedient in all our actions.  • Be set apart in your morality.  • Be set apart in your speech.  • Be set apart in your attitude.  • Be set apart in what you watch/read/meditate on.  18 “knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” —I Peter 1:18-21  5. We will remember our free gift of salvation had a high cost.  TAKEAWAY: Our obedience invites God into our everyday lives.

    Peter - " Living As Chosen Exiles " - 1 Peter 1:1-12 - Mike Maglish

Living As Chosen Exiles Part of 1&2 Peter: Standing firm in shifting times    BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW OF 1 PETER Written by the Apostle Peter in the early 60’s AD  - Silvanus (Latin) or Silas (Greek/Aramaic) = Scribe Written to believers scattered across Asia Minor (Modern-Day Turkey)  These believers experienced: Social Pressure, Cultural marginalization, growing persecution, and misunderstanding for their faith.   PURPOSE OF THE LETTER Encourage believers to endure suffering  Ground them in identity before giving instruction  Teach them how to live holy, hopeful lives in a hostile world.   KEY THEME Hope-filled holiness in a world that doesn’t feel like home.   PETER’S UNIQUE  Denied Jesus 3 times (Luke 22:54-62)  He was a fisherman called into an entirely new mission (Matthew 4:18-20)  Faced persecution and imprisonment for preaching the gospel (Acts 4-5)  1 Peter 1:1–2    Elect – ἐκλεκτοῖς (eklektois) – v.1   Means: chosen, selected, set apart.   Not just “picked randomly,” but chosen with intention and purpose.   Used in the Septuagint (Greek OT) for Israel as God’s chosen people.  Exiles / Sojourners – παρεπιδήμοις (parepidēmois) – v.1   This is the word your group noticed.   It means:   • Temporary resident   • Foreigner   • Someone passing through   • Someone living in a place that is not their true home   It’s not just geographic — it’s identity language.  “For Obedience To Christ” - hupakoē (ὑπακοή) — “submissive listening, compliance, faithfulness.” (V 2)   • This speaks to the lifestyle and allegiance of believers.   • God chose these believers so that they would live in faithful obedience to Christ.   • Essentially: obedience is the natural outflow of election.  “for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood”   • This is deeply Old Testament covenant language.   • “Sprinkling” evokes sacrificial rites, especially in Exodus, Leviticus, and the Day of Atonement:   • Blood was sprinkled on the people and the altar to signify purification, sanctification, and covenant relationship with God (Exodus 24:8; Leviticus 4:6).   • In the New Testament context, it points to Jesus’ sacrificial death: His blood cleanses believers and sets them apart as God’s people (Hebrews 9:13–14; 1 John 1:7).   • We are sanctified and made holy by the blood of Christ, just as Israel was set apart by blood in the OT.  My IDENTITY in Christ comes before my ACTIVITY for Christ  1 Peter 1:3–5  Born Again - New Life   Living Hope - Hope Anchored In Resurrection   Inheritance - Imperishable, Undefiled, Unfading, Kept in heaven   Being Guarded - Our Very Identity And Inheritance Are Being Protected  My HOPE is alive because JESUS is alive  1 Peter 1:6–7   Trials refine my faith, they don’t define my faith   1 Peter 1:8–9   John 20:27–29   Faith is not rooted in SIGHT, but in TRUST  1 Peter 1:10–12   Meaning:   What you may take casually, heaven takes seriously. Don’t take it for granted!   Encouragement:   You are living in the fulfillment of what generations longed to see. Let it be your identity!  Our IDENTITY is God’s Holy INTENTIONALITY Takeaway: HE CHOSE ME, SO: MY IDENTITY IS SECURE, MY HOPE IS ALIVE, AND MY CALLING IS TO LIVE SET APART FOR CHRIST.

Earthly Treasures - "Stewardship: Your Monies’ Mission" - Luke 14:25-35 - Tim Nay

Stewardship: Your Monies’ MissionLuke 14:25-35 Tim Nay Part of Earthly Treasures January 11, 2026 28 “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’” —Luke 14:28-30  Budget = an estimate of income and expenditure for a set period of time.  Wise stewards budget first.  THINGS TO CONSIDER FOR A BUDGET:• Adopt a 70/20/10 or 80/10/10 ratio.  • Get an estimate of your current income.  • Write down your current bills/expenditures.  • Find out where your money is currently going.  • List what you’d like to see purchased short/long term. (Including retirement)  • Seek financial advice outside of yourself.  25 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” —Luke 14:25-27  “If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.” —Luke 14:26 NLT  Money is a tool to build character, not simply comfort.  “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.” —Malachi 3:108 “First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs. 9 For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name.” —Proverbs 3:8-9 NLT  6 “But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.” —I Timothy 6:6-9  31 “Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.” —Luke 14:31-33  We are stewards, not owners.  34 “Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? 35 It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” —Luke 14:34-35  Five phrases about salt:“You are the salt of the earth.” (Matthew 5:13)“Don’t rub salt into the wound!”“They are not worth their salt.”“I’d take that with a grain of salt!”“He’s just an old salt!”  TAKEAWAY: How I manage money impacts the world around me.

Earthly Treasures - "Biblical Stewardship - Through A Citizens Lens" - Matthew 6:19-24; Philippians 3:20, Matthew 22:21 - Mike Maglish

Biblical Stewardship - Through A Citizens Lens Matthew 6:19-24; Philippians 3:20, Matthew 22:21 Mike Maglish Part of Earthly Treasures January 4, 2026 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” —Mark 1:14–15  20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. —Philippians 3:20–21  “If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next.” - CS Lewis  CITIZENSHIP shapes STEWARDSHIP  1. The Pharisees  • Religious conservatives  • Strongly opposed Roman rule  • Popular with the Jewish people  • If Jesus endorsed the tax, He’d lose public favor 2.The Herodians  • Political loyalists to Herod Antipas and, by extension, Rome  • Supported Roman taxation  • If Jesus rejected the tax, they could accuse Him of treason  15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away. —Matthew 22:15–22  THE RESPONSE… Affirms Civil Responsibility  • Taxes, governance, civic order have a legitimate place  • Jesus is not an anarchist or political revolutionaryLimits the State’s Authority  • Caesar gets what belongs to Caesar—but not everything  • The state does not get worship, conscience, or ultimate allegianceClaims Everything for God  • Coins bear Caesar’s image → belong to Caesar  • People bear God’s image (Genesis 1:26–27) → belong to GodThis reframes the question from taxes to ultimate ownership.  STEWARDSHIP is a HEART issue  19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. —Matthew 6:19–21  13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. —1 Corinthians 13:13  Kingdom of God investment looks like…  -Spending what you can’t keep on what you can’t lose.  -Trading temporary comfort for eternal impact  -Using earthly currency to build heavenly capital  -Planting seeds you may never see grow  -Living today with tomorrow’s glory in mind  Eternal INHERITANCE is the REWARD  Takeaway: What you invest NOW echoes into ETERNITY  “I commit to being a good steward of the KINGDOM in 2026”

    "Change that Sticks in 2026" - 2 Kings 5:1-18 - Tim Nay

Change that Sticks in 2026 2 Kings 5:1-18 Tim Nay December 28, 2025 “It is no good choosing a change you’d like to see in someone else. You can’t choose ‘well-behaved children’ or ‘more attentive friends.’ You must choose something about you—such as ‘not shouting at my children’ or ‘getting less irritated by my housemates.’” (Chester, You Can Change, p. 19)  “Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master and in high favor, because by him the Lord had given victory to Syria. He was a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.” —2 Kings 5:1  1. Humility is necessary for change.   —2 Kings 5:2-6  2. Listening to other thoughts and ideas is essential.  9 “So Naaman came with his horses and chariots and stood at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean.” 11 But Naaman was angry and went away, saying, “Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper. 12 Are not Abana[c] and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage. 13 But his servants came near and said to him, “My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14 So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.” —2 Kings 5:9-14  3. Obedience before understanding is often necessary.  —2 Kings 5:17-18  I ASKED GOD… I asked for strength  and God gave me difficulties to make me strong. I asked for wisdom  and God gave me problems to learn to solve. I asked for prosperity  and God gave me a brain and brawn to work. I asked for courage  and God gave me dangers to overcome. I asked for love  and God gave me people to help. I asked for favors  and God gave me opportunities. I received nothing I wanted.  I received everything I needed. —AUTHOR UNKNOWN (tribute to a civil war soldier)  4. Real, lasting transformation begins in the heart.  18 “Hear then the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” —Matthew 13:18-23 TYPES of HEARTS affecting Change: Hard Heart - lacks understanding and does not act before it’s snatched away.  Rocky Heart - receives but runs into tough times and abandons.  Thorny Heart - receives but cares of the world and deceitfulness of riches chokes it out.  Good Heart - understands and acts immediately and continues.  TAKEAWAY: Real change comes from a heart surrendered to God.
