Most people are waiting for permission to become who they actually are. This is Hero World. A podcast about the moments that change you — the falls, the pivots, the conversations you don't forget. From Homeless & Suicidal to TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People | Desmond Meade | Hero World

In August 2005, Desmond Meade stood in front of railroad tracks waiting for a train. He was homeless. Addicted to drugs. No ID. No one who would come to his funeral. He had asked a pastor to pray for him the night before — and she told him to make an appointment. He walked out saying even God had turned his back on him. The train never came. What happened in the next few hours — the question he asked himself after crossing those tracks, the connection he made to Rosa Parks' funeral on television, the walk two blocks to a drug treatment center — became the foundation of one of the most significant civil rights stories of our time. Desmond Meade is a former convicted felon who became the architect of Amendment Four — the 2018 Florida ballot initiative that restored voting rights to 1.4 million people with prior felony convictions. TIME Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. The MacArthur Foundation awarded him a Genius Grant. His organization was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the same committee that nominated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In this conversation, Desmond takes us through the full arc: the Virgin Islands, the military, the court martial, the three years of confinement, the death of his mother, the railroad tracks, the drug treatment program, Rosa Parks, the homeless advocacy movement, and the 2018 landslide that changed Florida forever. He closes with this: "We are the heroes we have been waiting for. Tap into it." Follow Desmond: @desmondmeade44Website: https://desmondmeade.com Prefer to watch?
