From Layoff to Legacy: Carlena Davis of Spilling the Sweet Tea is Cooking Up Courage

Back in 2022, she was selling peach preserves at the end of her driveway during COVID, figuring it out in real time. Today? She’s appeared six times on Fox 5 DC, authored multiple cookbooks, built a thriving food brand, and stepped fully into entrepreneurship after being laid off from corporate America. In this powerful and heartfelt conversation, Carlena Davis, founder of Spilling the Sweet Tea, returns to the Girl, YES! Podcast to share what really happens when preparation meets purpose. We talk about: ✨ Pivoting without panic ✨ Betting on yourself after 25 years in corporate ✨ Building a brand rooted in legacy and authenticity ✨ Why “visibility” doesn’t always equal security ✨ Handling social media flops and staying consistent ✨ Family support… and the silence that sometimes comes with growth ✨ Creating opportunities without asking for permission Carlena opens up about the moment she got laid off and why instead of updating her résumé, she updated her vision. From launching her bold cookbook and social media series You Can Make That $h!t at Home to expanding Miss Lena’s biscuit mixes and preserves, she reminds us that faith and focus can coexist. This episode is for the woman who feels the nudge. The one with ideas scribbled in her Notes app. The one building in the background. The one wondering if it’s time. It just might be. Because sometimes the push you didn’t plan for becomes the permission you were waiting on.
