Ep. 246: Fly Fishing for Humanity (Ft. Jeff Stonic)

My guest is a Wisconsin-raised, Denver-based documentary filmmaker, photographer, & THE story chaperone.  After his last appearance over 100 episodes ago, he finished ‘Bad Indian,’ a short film following his close friend, stand-up comic Josh Emerson, from Denver to Los Angeles for Netflix’s first all-native show, spreading his mom’s ashes along the way.  Over the last year, he followed Ren Q. Dawe across America on the ‘Here To Pee’ Tour, capturing the moments as Ren made history as the first trans comedian to tour all 50 states.  Oh yeah, he also shot & edited crowd work for Nate Jackson, one of the greatest magic-makers on stage, bringing out pure human joy through unplanned interaction every night.  We’ve got the Brewers’ World Series run on the studio TV, so pump up the hype to 100 & join me in welcoming back to our humble Top Shelf Studios: Jeff Stonic! Follow Jeff @JeffStonicShotIt on Instagram & find his work at stonic.studio We discussed how 2025 was a year of explosive growth for Jeff as a documentarian, debated whether shooting a Halloween party in Thornton counts as art, & Sean’s dismal economist brain mourns the albums & art lost to young creatives shoehorned into the rat race.  We learn how filming & fishing with Eeland Stribling turned Jeff onto his new full-blown obsession: fly fishing, & how one seemingly helpful ChatGPT question about ‘which flies to tie’ for the Frying Pan River hollowed out his entire trip. From the ‘All Fours’ guys building a sketch around leftover blue body paint (P.E. genius), to the Brewers’ ‘legendary’ tickets that say ‘including the World Series’ right on them, to whether $500 million could do more good in an AI data center or in the pockets of independent creators.  These are the questions.  This is the show. EATIN’ (the full uncut hang featuring smoked chicken wings) is on Patreon for our supporters. First-Run tier only $2/month!  Want to support independent art?  Patreon.com/InTALLerable  Join for uncut content, hand-made merch, & to tell me I shouldn’t get another day job. Ep. 245: Diminishing Returns to Wings (Ft. Stephen Heywood)

My guest is a fellow door-guy at Comedy Works, a veteran of both the downtown & South clubs (because he actually fits in both places, unlike me).  Country roads took him from Charleston, West Virginia, through four colleges & a chemistry degree, to a fresh start in Colorado, where he just hit seven years sober and is as funny as ever.  He’s survived the Dollar Tree on Colfax, a streaking arrest in Morgantown, & recently hit 4:20.69 at the Gong Show at the Lion’s Lair. We’ve got Mountain Dew on ice for a late weeknight episode, so pump up the hype & join me in welcoming to our humble Top Shelf Studios: Stephen Heywood! Follow Stephen @stephenthinkshesfunny on Instagram & YouTube!  We discussed Stephen growing up on the country roads from the song, how West Virginia is ‘cost of living’ mogging over other states, how different kids today will be as adults after growing up surrounded by AI tools, & whether West Virginia is secretly the best place to start a family.  Sean presents his college thesis on happiness economics, but mostly uses it to defend the checkout line.  We hear Stephen’s road from rehab to the Dollar Tree warehouse (PSA: do not eat the food at Dollar Tree), the 72-hour hold he earned by telling a cop about ‘Dexter’ for 30 minutes, & four naked laps around the block in Morgantown before the cops crested the hill.  From Futurama & AI solving math that doctors in mathematics have dedicated their career towards, to Plato’s Cave & Counter-Strike conga lines. Stick around for the ‘After-Hours’ where Stephen brings an offering: a rubber duck, just like the ones mysteriously showing up all over both Comedy Works.  Who keeps planting them?!  EATIN’ (the full uncut hang featuring smoked chicken wings) is on Patreon for our supporters. A chicken-wing economics lesson in diminishing returns (graph included), ‘Frozen’ semantic gymnastics example, Sean’s first memory being 9/11 (yes, that one.), & a Tim-Dillon-esque one-man show nobody asked for.   Why not join the ’Patch? Ep. 244: Semantic Gymnastics (Ft. Jeremy Cash & Chet Tilly)

My guests are Denver-based comics, but more important: they’re friends.  A couple of walking buddies who are building & improving their stand-up acts one City Park stroll at a time.  First, a new face in Top Shelf Studios, I believe one of the best joke-writers in Denver: Jeremy Cash!  Jeremy is a New York transplant with 12 years of stand-up experience.  His resume includes background work on ‘Billions’ & a surprise stage call-up from Doug Stanhope.  Last, my counterpart on the height spectrum, a cat lover & racket-sport assassin, making his return to enjoy our signature smoked chicken wings: Chet Tilly!    Chet works in travel, which means every trip with his fiancée is a ‘honeymoon’ (money moves!)   Buy your Jeremy Cash bonds now, before the price goes up; buy low, sell high, and get hyped to welcome: Jeremy Cash & Chet Tilly!  Follow Jeremy @jeremycashcomedy & Chet @chetcomedy on Instagram!  Go out to see them perform stand-up, you won’t regret it. We discuss the 24-hour phone sabbath, AI’s widespread rotting of our collective critical thinking, & Jeremy’s first-ever joke (a haiku, on a rock, through a window).  Sean presents the concept of ‘semantic gymnastics’, but struggles to give a decent example.  We debate if bad open mics are just as valuable as good ones, & whether stand-up survives AI writing jokes.  Stick around to the ‘After-Hours’ where we hear about Jeremy mistakenly taking the A-Team’s van for travel on the set of ‘Billions’.  What?!  It looked like a bus!!  He swears.  EATIN’ (the full hang) is on Patreon this week: wing-side talk on Michael Rapaport’s 26-minute standing ovation, the death of the third meeting place, Plato’s cave, & the Turing test for humanity.  Want the vaulted & bonus episodes, the show staying ad-free, & a handmade hat when your support hits the cost of one? Ep. 243: EATIN’ For All (Ft. Papa JR 'The Pajama Man')

My guest is a Detroit-born pajama man & Denver-based stand-up comic, often found slinging drinks behind the bar at the Lion’s Lair.  He just shot the first episode of his new rotating-venue variety show called: ‘The Papa JR Show’.  Think the Eric Andre Show–meets–Johnny Carson energy, if that helps you get some idea, otherwise you will need to tune in when it gets released!  Turn your ‘Stadium Pulse’ all the way up into the red & join me fully hyped to welcoming to our humble Top Shelf Studios: Papa JR! Everybody gets the EATIN’ for this hang.  Typically, our guests get the privacy of enjoying our signature smoked chicken wings behind the safety of the Patreon paywall, but JR & I decided to open with the full EATIN’ hang for free, for all! Traeger smoked wings, Hennessy on the couch, & Papa JR walking through cutting every rope between you & the promised land of comedy.  Then we go deep on permission vs affirmation, unspoken nepotism in the packs, Billy Gardell’s Netflix-worthy hour that the business will bury, and Papa JR presents Boondocks-as-politics.  Sean wonders could-50-be-president, we make the case for listening to women, & why influencers bombing on club stages might accidentally save the art form.  A lot more honesty than a pajama set should legally allow, that’s an InTALLerable guarantee. Ep. 242: Europe is a Second-World Country (Ft. Talon Saucerman & Grant Lucas)

My guests are two comics fresh off international travel. One, a wise man with farm-kid energy from South Dakota who was exploring timeless treasures throughout the Vatican with his better half, the other, a man who drove a seven-person, diesel-powered manual van through the narrow streets of Ireland. Up Denverstandup.com — get yourself hyped as hell & welcome back to Top Shelf Studios: Talon Saucerman & Grant Lucas! We discussed Italian pizza crimes, go deep on Europe-as-second-world, hear about Navy SEAL brothers beating out Irish rental transmissions, Vatican stolen-art tours, the seemingly pending Alberta secession, the Lindsey Clancy case, and Grant explains in lay terms the Hugging Face rogue agents news to two guys struggling to keep up with his intelligence.  From Macklemore traffic to Jake & Logan Paul speaking to Dept. of War staff at the Pentagon.  A lot more than a European podcast could manage, that’s an American guarantee.  Do you have quicksand trauma?  This episode is for you.  EATIN’ (the full uncut hang) with Talon & Grant is up for our supporters on Patreon.com/InTALLerable — Only $2/month. Ep. 241: RIP Rascal (Ft. Jacob Humphries & Garrett Nygren)

My guests are returning fan-favorites. One is InTALLerable’s most prolific riffer on our couch & the other a prolific Denver comedy producer who created ‘Pallet City Comedy’, & showed up fashionably late for this hang, AKA just in time to join us for EATIN’ our signature Top Shelf smoked chicken wings. Please start shaking with energy and welcome back to our humble studios: Jacob Humphries & Garrett Nygren! Follow Jacob @ChrashCompactor on Instagram & catch him hosting the Monkey Barrel open mic every Thursday!  Follow Garrett @Garrett.Nygren & check out Pallet City Comedy on socials @palletcitycomedy — Open Mics at Locales on Tuesdays, Hazel’s on Wednesdays (NEW!), & of course the Monkey Barrel each Thursday with Jacob. We open on a tight shot with only Jacob, eager to “put me on” to internet sensation Stacy Kennison, and her alleged Sandra Bullock/witchcraft Instagram saga.  Yowza.  We learn from Jacob the value in being an AMC A-Lister & Sean finally gets to ask whether his wings inspired Jacob’s newest wing job.  In the after-hours we hear the wing ratings from our guests and Jacob & Garret each share some happy memories of their times with the rascal, Danny Mauppin.   This hang is dedicated to him.  I wasn’t fortunate enough to get to know Danny, but I have no doubt he will live on for many years in the stories of his friends on this moral plane.  You don’t have to, but if you like our show and want to support keeping us ad-free & independently produced, please consider joining our Patreon — Patreon.com/InTALLerable — Only $2/month & you get every uncut EATIN’ with wonderful guests like Jacob & Garrett.   You access the inner sanctum, get vaulted & bonus episodes with our favorite quests, & when your support hits the cost of a hat, I stitch you one with my own hands. Ep. 240: Caves Were Our First Home (Ft. Braxton Fuller)

Our guest returns to Top Shelf Studios for his third appearance, one of the most quickly-rising — or descending, rather — cavers in the Rocky Mountain West. Please welcome back, friend of the show & the Editor-in-Chief of Rocky Mountain Caving: Braxton Fuller! Follow Braxton @BraxtonAF on Instagram & go support Rocky Mountain Caving — It is the best quarterly publication in the game & powered nearly entirely by humans like you supporting!  And let’s be honest, your foyer or side table is in desperate need of high-quality film photography of caves. Trust me, you will want it in your hands.  Braxton’s Master’s from DU is being held in escrow (missed a summer email, debt collection, he’s good for it), he’s 308 applications deep with two interviews, and Whole Foods told him a Master’s degree overqualified him to work in meat & seafood.  Give him the job, Outside!  We talk “CaveWay” vs real LiDAR, Schrödinger’s box of exploration, autonomous caving robots  & Olive as the canary in the coalmine, crossing the 140° ‘Lake of Fire’ which Braxton (God knows why) plans to traverse again in two weeks, calcium carbide helmets, why drones would have ruined Silent Splendor, and finally why cavers are funny beans.  In the After-Hours Braxton reviews Sean’s signature smoked chicken wings, we learn that caves were Humanity’s first ancestral home, we discuss the Land of the Seven Caves, historical tribal stories of Spider Mother & the Sipapu, NAGPRA, and whether objective truth even exists.   EATIN’ (the full uncut hang) with Braxton is up for our supporters on Patreon.com/InTALLerable You get the inner sanctum, vaulted episodes, & when your support reaches the cost of a hat, I will stitch you one with my own two hands.  How ‘bout that?
