    Cold Water, Heavy Slabs, and the Future of Scottish Surfing with Mark Boyd What does it take to become a champion surfer in a country where the river water literally freezes as it runs into the sea? Mark shares what it’s really like to navigate Caithness's brutal winter conditions—where air temperatures regularly drop below freezing—and how he balanced a grueling summer job working on offshore rigs to fund a winter lifestyle chasing heavy slabs around the world. We also explore Mark's massive impact off the board. As a lead coach for Renegade Surf Travel, he splits his time between frigid home reefs and tropical coaching trips in the Maldives and Costa Rica.     Today we are sitting down with Craig McLachlan.  5 x Scottish National Surfing Champion.  And as of just last weekend, the mens champion of the Highland Fling wavepool competition at Lost Shore- which if you haven't seen some of the surfing then you probably should, it was insane he's also an: ISA-qualified coach. the lead coach at Lost Shore,and a man who has earned considerable respect surfing heavy reef breaks alongside Nathan Florence — which, if you have seen Nathan Florence's slab tour, tells you a lot.Craig grew up in Thurso — one of the most iconic surf spots in the world — and that background runs through everything he does as a coach. He was part of the team that just took Scotland to their best-ever Euro Surf finish, and he's now bringing all of that knowledge to surfers through Hodi.tv, coaching at wavepool camps and via online coaching.     Located in a valley, next to the town of Sion and surrounded by many famous ski resorts, Alaia Bay is Europe's #1 Wave Pool In this episode, we speak with Vincent Van Laethem, CEO of Alaia Bay and the Alaia Businesses that the group operate.  In case you didn't know, they have a skateboard park, indoor & outdoor, snow park, hotel and many other adventure sports assets in the area. Vincent has extensive experience with many other Adventure Sports and has an amazing attitude to running the business, and that is, to always focus on the customer experience and ensure that Alaia provide the most enjoyable experience. In this episode we hear Vincent talk about the timeline for creating a wave pool, what kind of people are visiting Alaia Bay, their views about facilities and experiences and what they are trying to achieve. We apologise for some of the background noise caused by the waves being pumped out at the wave pool, demo helicopters and busy management talking as when we sat down with Vincent, the Alaia Bay Winter Cup 2021 was is full swing and it was hard to find a quiet spot to speak.
