Episode 36 - The Old Days of Wargaming

Episode 36 - The Old Days of Wargaming This week the guys take a trip down memory lane, but first, the usual hobby progress and games played. Kurt spent the week rearranging his hobby and game room, a project that took much longer than expected and is still a work in progress, while also starting on his Cities of Sigmar Spearhead box. Steve stripped the paint off a set of Assault Intercessors and Space Marine Scouts and finished up two squads of Deathwing Knights. On the games side, Kurt had a Star Wars Legion game scheduled that unfortunately fell through, and Steve had a quiet week with no games to report. For the main topic, Kurt and Steve reminisce about the good old days of wargaming. They cover what the hobby store scene looked like before the internet made everything easy, from relying on your FLGS to sites like DakkaDakka and Warseer. They share their first demo games, including a memorable 40K intro using coins and sticky notes to represent Tyranids, and look back on their first armies, including a Craigslist Chaos buy and an accidental Tomb Kings purchase for the wrong game system entirely. From there the conversation shifts to the mechanics of old, covering Fantasy's chaotic magic phase, 5th edition's vehicle facing rules, wound allocation shell games, and the all day marathon that a single game of 40K used to be. They wrap up debating which old rules deserve to stay buried and which ones they'd bring back in a heartbeat.
