S3, Ep : 63. Palma Cathedral: Eight Centuries of Art

Hola Loopers! Here we are again, with another little journey through Spain, and this week we're heading to the beautiful island of Mallorca. More specifically, to one of those places that makes you stop, look up, and say, “Palma Cathedral or La Seu”. We're talking about Her today, as it's known locally. And trust us, there's a lot more to this magnificent building than its impressive Gothic towers and that spectacular setting by the sea. This time, Fran is taking the lead, and I'm right there with him, asking the questions. Because, let's be honest, when you stand in front of a building like this, you want to know what's behind all that stone, all that beauty, and all those centuries of history. How did it all begin? Why was a cathedral built on this particular spot? And how did a project that started in the Middle Ages evolve over the centuries into the extraordinary place we can visit today? But here's where things get really interesting. La Seu isn't just a medieval masterpiece frozen in time. It's a living record of changing tastes, artistic ideas, and generations of people who left their mark on it. We'll talk about its Gothic origins, the remarkable changes introduced by Antoni Gaudí in the early 20th century, and the striking contemporary work of Mallorca artist Miquel Barceló. Quite a journey, isn't it? From medieval stonework to modern art, all under one extraordinary roof. And that's what we love about exploring Spain together. There's always another story hiding behind something you've walked past a hundred times in photographs, or perhaps even seen with your own eyes. So, come and join Fran and me for a conversation about history, architecture, art, and the fascinating way the past keeps finding its place in the present. Put the kettle on, grab your coffee, or pour yourself something nice, and enjoy another episode of Spanish Loops. Because, as always, Spain has a story to tell. And we're here to tell it to you. S3, Ep : 62. Federico Garcia Lorca, La Bola Negra, and Spain’s Buried Truth

Have you ever wondered what happens when a society decides that someone is simply not allowed to be who they are? Not because they have hurt anybody, not because they have done anything wrong, but because they are different from what society expects them to be.  Well, my friends, today on Spanish Loops, Fran and I are talking about a man whose words have survived almost a century of silence, fear and injustice. A man who could make you feel the deepest sorrow with a poem, laugh through a play, or look at the world in a completely different way.   His name was Federico García Lorca.   Born in Andalusia in 1898, Lorca became one of Spain's greatest poets and playwrights. His writing was full of passion, music, love, freedom and that unmistakable Andalusian soul. But behind the beauty of his words was a man living in a country where being openly different could come at a terrible price.   Lorca was gay, a brilliant artist, and a man whose personal life and progressive ideas made him vulnerable in an increasingly divided Spain. In August 1936, just weeks after the Spanish Civil War began, he was arrested and assassinated. His exact burial place remains unknown.   And honestly, when you think about it, there is something profoundly heart breaking about a country losing one of its greatest literary voices to hatred and political violence.   But here's where the story takes an extraordinary turn.   Almost ninety years later, a film called “La bola Negra”, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, has brought Lorca's unfinished work back into the spotlight. Spain has selected it as its entry for the 2027 Academy Awards, and the film has already collected major international festival awards.   The story explores what it means to be rejected by society, to have a kind of invisible black ball cast against your name simply because of who you are.  And that, my friends, is what makes this story so powerful. We are not just talking about something that happened in Spain in the 1930s. We are talking about belonging, identity, prejudice and the price people have paid for being themselves.   So, come and join Fran and me as we remember Federico García Lorca, celebrate his extraordinary talent, and talk about why his voice still matters today. Because some stories are never truly finished. And some voices refuse to disappear. S3, Ep : 61. Spain’s Black Legend: History, Propaganda and Legacy

Hello, Loopers! Lovely to be back with you for another episode of Spanish Loops. This week, we’re talking about something that has followed Spain around for centuries: the Black Legend. And believe me, there’s quite a story behind it! Spain was once one of the most powerful empires in the world, with kings who ruled vast territories, armies fighting across Europe, and ships crossing oceans in search of wealth and new lands. But while the Spanish Crown was building its empire, its enemies were busy building a very different image of Spain. Let’s start with the Trastámaras, move on to the Habsburgs, and then bring in the Bourbons. Add the Crown of Castile, the Dutch fighting for independence, the English looking to challenge Spanish power, and a fair amount of religious and political rivalry. Suddenly, you have all the ingredients for a story that goes well beyond kings, queens and battles. Because here’s the interesting part: how much of what the world came to believe about Spain was based on real events, and how much was shaped by those who had their own reasons for making Spain look bad? Of course, Spain's imperial past had its darker side. There were conquests, persecution, violence and terrible suffering, particularly in the Americas. We’re not here to pretend otherwise. But other European powers had empires of their own, and their records deserve the same honest scrutiny. So, why did Spain acquire such a powerful reputation, who helped spread it, and why do some of those old stories still influence the way people see the country today? And perhaps just as interesting, how does the story change when you look at it from Spain, Britain, the Netherlands or somewhere else entirely? That’s what Fran and I are getting into this week. A little royal drama, a little international rivalry, plenty of history, and a few things that might make you look at familiar stories rather differently. So, make yourself comfortable, join us for another Spanish Loops, and let’s have a proper conversation about Spain’s Black Legend. And as always, thanks for being part of our little community of Loopers. You know we love having you here! Discover Spain every week with Fran And Jorge. S3, Ep : 60. Talaiotic Culture. The unknown Menorca Island.

Hello there, Loopers! Welcome back to another episode of Spanish Loops. This week, we are heading to a very special corner of Spain: the island of Menorca. And we are going back thousands of years, long before Romans, Moors, or even the first written history of the Balearic Islands. We are talking about the Talaiotic culture. Now, if you have ever visited Menorca, you may have come across some rather strange stone constructions scattered across the landscape. Towers, enormous stone walls, underground spaces, and those wonderful taulas, two huge slabs of stone carefully placed to form something that looks almost like a giant stone table. And this is where things get really interesting. The Talaiotic culture developed in the Balearic Islands during prehistoric times, but Menorca became something truly extraordinary. The island is covered with hundreds of archaeological sites, many of them remarkably well preserved. You can literally walk through landscapes where people were building these structures more than three thousand years ago. But why? That is the big mystery. We know quite a lot about the people who lived here. We know they had communities, animals, agriculture, traditions and their own ways of building. But when it comes to the exact purpose of some of these monuments, things become much less clear. Were the talaiots defensive towers? Meeting places? Symbols of power? Religious spaces? And what exactly happened around those mysterious taulas? Well… archaeologists have theories, but there is still plenty we simply don't know. And perhaps that is part of the magic. Menorca has preserved these stones through centuries of wind, rain, changing civilizations and modern life. They are not sitting behind glass in a museum. They are out there, in the countryside, surrounded by the same Mediterranean landscape that prehistoric islanders knew. So this week, Loopers, let's travel back beyond written history and into a Menorca of stones, mystery and ancient communities. Because sometimes, the oldest stories are the ones that still have the most secrets. Discover Spain every week with Fran And Jorge. S3, EP : 59. Ronda: Where History Meets the Andalusian Sky

Hello, Loopers, and welcome back to Spanish Loops! This week, Fran and I are taking you to a place that, for me, is impossible to forget: Ronda, in the mountains of Málaga, one of those Spanish places where history, landscape and everyday life seem to have decided to live together. Perched above the spectacular Tajo de Ronda, with its famous Puente Nuevo crossing the gorge, Ronda is much more than a beautiful photograph. It is a town with layers upon layers of history. Its story reaches back to prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence of human settlement going back to the Neolithic, while nearby caves preserve much older traces of human presence. Later came the Romans, with Acinipo, then centuries of Islamic history, the Kingdom of Granada, the Christian conquest, and eventually the romantic image of Ronda that fascinated nineteenth-century travellers. And you can still feel all of that when you walk through the town. There are ancient walls, Arab baths, palaces, churches, narrow streets, magnificent viewpoints and, of course, that extraordinary bridge suspended above the gorge. But what I particularly love about Ronda is that it never feels like a museum. It is a living Andalusian town, surrounded by the Serranía de Ronda, with its traditions, food, wine, stories and very strong personality. In this episode, Fran and I take you through some of the history, characters and places that have helped make Ronda one of the most fascinating destinations in southern Spain. And, as always, we will try to look beyond the postcard and get a little closer to the real Spain behind it. And stay with us right until the very end, because we have a little surprise waiting for you before we say goodbye. Nothing complicated… but I think you’re going to enjoy it! So, get comfortable, Loopers. We’re heading inland from Málaga, into the mountains, and straight into the heart of one of Andalusia’s most extraordinary towns. This is Ronda. And this is Spanish Loops.

S3, Ep : 57. How Spain Gives Retirees Holidays Worth Taking

Have you ever wondered what happens when a country decides that retirement should come with a little sunshine, a nice hotel, and a holiday? Well… Spain has an answer for that. It’s called Imserso, and if you’re visiting Spain and suddenly notice thousands of Spanish retirees heading to the coast in the middle of winter, there’s a very good chance they’re on an Imserso holiday. And honestly, it’s one of those wonderfully Spanish things that deserves a little explanation. The idea began back in 1978, originally as a way of giving older people, particularly those who lived alone, the opportunity to enjoy holidays and social activities. But there was another clever idea behind it: keeping hotels, restaurants, transport companies and other tourism businesses working during Spain’s quieter months. Fast-forward forty years, and the programme has become a remarkably large operation. For the 2026–27 season, almost 880,000 places are being offered, covering Spain’s Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, the Balearic and Canary Islands, cultural circuits, nature trips, provincial capitals, Ceuta and Melilla. And here’s the part that might make you raise an eyebrow. A nine-night coastal holiday can start at around €309, including accommodation, full board and transport in many cases. There’s even a specially reserved group of places costing just €50 for people with particularly limited financial resources. So who can actually go? What are the requirements? How does Spain decide who gets a place? Who pays for it? And why does the government consider holidays part of something as serious as healthy ageing? This week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I are taking a closer look at Imserso, the Spanish holiday programme that manages to combine retirement, tourism, social policy and a surprisingly good deal. So grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and let me tell you about one of Spain’s most curious traditions. Because retirement in Spain apparently comes with one very important rule: You’re not supposed to stop enjoying yourself.

    S3, Ep : 56. Granada’s Royal Chapel: Where Spain’s History Rests

There’s a place in Granada where history doesn’t simply sit behind glass or on the pages of a textbook. It’s right there, in front of you and carved into stone, painted on walls, buried beneath the floor, and wrapped up in one of the most fascinating stories of Spain. The Royal Chapel of Granada is the final resting place of Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, the Catholic Monarchs. And yet, their decision to be buried here was not quite as straightforward as you might imagine. Originally, Toledo had been chosen as their burial place. So why Granada? Fran and I take you inside the Royal Chapel to unravel that story, from the final years of the Reconquest and the fall of Granada to the journey their remains made before reaching the magnificent chapel you can visit today. And then there’s the building itself. The Royal Chapel is a wonderful little lesson in the transition from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance. Look closely and you’ll find symbols, religious imagery, royal propaganda, sculpture, architecture and artwork all telling part of the story. It’s almost like walking through a visual Wikipedia of Renaissance Spain, except, thankfully, there’s no loading screen. This is also one of those places that makes you understand Granada a little differently. The Alhambra tells one part of the story. The Royal Chapel tells another:  the story of the Christian monarchy, its ambitions, its faith, and the enormous political changes taking place at the end of the 15th century. And yes, Jorge includes a visit to the Royal Chapel in The Essence of Southern Spain tour, because some places are simply too important to experience through a guidebook. So this week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I are opening the doors and taking you inside one of Granada’s most remarkable landmarks. History is waiting downstairs. And it has quite a story to tell.
