    Season Five Wrap-Up: Looking Back on a Milestone Year

    Send us Fan Mail Season Five is officially in the books, and somewhere in the middle of it, On The Porch with Front Porch Music quietly crossed one hundred episodes. That milestone landed on episode 100 itself, a conversation with Owen Riegling, who wrote the show’s theme song and was the very first guest we interviewed five years earlier. We closed things out a little differently this time. Instead of a guest, Logan and Jenna sat down to look back at a genuinely massive year for Canadian country music, along with their own favorite moments from the season. A Big Year for Canadian Country It’s been a year of Canadian artists taking up more space than ever.  Nearly 40 percent of the current top 50 on country radio is Canadian. Cameron Whitcomb went from a cancelled 2024 tour to charting across every major format there is. Kelsey Kulyk will make her Grand Ole Opry debut after an invite from Lainey Wilson, and Jess Moskaluke got her invite live on television at the CCMA Awards in Saskatoon, caught completely off guard in front of the whole country. Shania Twain played Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern for the first time ever, a venue she somehow skipped entirely on her way up.  And it was a big year for the podcast itself. On The Porch picked up two CCMA nominations this season, including Country Personality of the Year, shared between Logan and Jenna as the first nomination for a non-traditional radio host in that category. Our Favorite Moments from Season Five A few conversations stuck with them long after recording. Tenille Arts talking, almost sheepishly, about breaking a chart record that used to belong to Terri Clark. Then the Owen Riegling episode itself, landing on their hundredth without either of them planning it that way, which made for a full-circle moment neither saw coming. Paige Penney telling the story of finding out she’d won Country Rising, surprised in a Nashville studio hallway with her mom there to catch it on camera. Robin Ottolini showing up to record just days after losing her grandmother and turning the conversation into something far more honest than either host expected. Brock Phillips being open about the stretch where music nearly broke him, long before it became his career. Then there were the moments that lived outside any one interview. Jake Etheridge of Thelma & James hearing a crowd at Boots and Hearts sing his own song back to him for the first time, in ear monitors pulled out so he could hear it properly. And the Joe Jonas “Country Joe” clip from Boots and Hearts that the team caught almost by accident and watched rack up millions of views across platforms within a day. We love LASSO and every year they remind us why.  We spent our time eating poutine, drinking Aperol Spritz, and taking in the festival experience - and of course, interviewing some of your favourite artists.     From Quitting His Job To CCMA Nominations and Top Of The Country with Morgan Griffiths

    Send us Fan Mail Morgan Griffiths joined us On the Porch to talk about the whirlwind that has been his life the last year and a half. He went from shy kid to full-time artist, quit his job, and has been building momentum with radio success, making the final 3 for SiriusXM's Top of the Country and having his first CCMA nominations. He also shares the story behind his latest single, "Boondocks", how Top of the Country has opened new doors and taken him to new places, and what it feels like to head into the CCMAs as a nominee. Morgan  picked up guitar during COVID, started by playing covers, and eventually began writing his own songs by humming melodies over chords. He grew up fairly shy, and playing music has helped him break out of his shell and become comfortable performing in front of people.     Shawnee Kish: Just 3 CCMA Nominees Hanging Out ...

    Send us Fan Mail Before Shawnee Kish was writing chart-worthy country songs, she was a kid doing Shania Twain impressions at local parades in Welland, Ontario, a "job" that turned into birthday parties and festival gigs long before she ever picked up a pen to write her own material. On this episode, Shawnee talks about writing as a lifeline during a hard adolescence, and how that same honesty still drives her music today. She's open about the pressure she's felt over the years to fit a certain mold, and the extra weight that's come with being a female, indigenous, two-spirit artist in country music, along with how she's learned to keep showing up as herself anyway. We also get into her whirlwind year: a Top of the Country finalist spot alongside Morgan Griffiths and Blue Ridge Band, a first-ever CCMA nomination for Alternative Country Album of the Year, and a new single called "Ride the River" landing in late August. She wrote her Top of the Country song, "Ride at Dawn," in under a week, and not long after headlined her first all-women country festival lineup, an experience she says confirmed exactly why she does this. Funny enough, this conversation turned out to be three CCMA nominees in one room. We'll see her again at Lasso and again at the CCMAs this fall.     Blue Ridge Band: Nordiques, Country Storm, and Country Music in Quebec with Jeremy Plante

    Send us Fan Mail Jeremy Plante's music career started out in pop-punk - a bit of an adjacent to country, some might say. Playing in bands his whole life, he's still in two! Before finding his way to country, he was a contestant on Star Académie. These days he's fronting Blue Ridge Band, one of Quebec's fastest rising country Bands. It's been a big year for "BRB"; a finalist spot in SiriusXM's Top of the Country alongside Shawnee Kish and Morgan Griffiths, a set at Lasso Music Festival, and enough overnight drives back and forth between Ontario and Quebec to make anyone's back hurt. On this episode, Jeremy breaks down just how different the country music landscape looks in Quebec, where major English Canadian acts barely register and building a following means playing constantly, and playing well. He also talks about starting his own festival series that still runs today. We also got into hockey, since Jeremy grew up in Quebec City, in what he calls "a full French area," where the sport isn't a hobby, it's inherited.  He played until midget and only stopped because touring stopped leaving room for practice. He's holding out cautious hope for hockey's return to Quebec City, and talks about the gap he sees in opportunities for girls trying to play at a competitive level, including why he'd welcome the PWHL expanding into the province.
