[SPECIAL EPISODE] mastered. The Business Of Music Episode 2: Record Deals

Send us Fan Mail Hey everyone! This week, we’re doing something a little different — instead of our regular On The Porch episode, we’re bringing you a full episode of our new limited series, mastered. The Business of Music. mastered. pulls back the curtain on the music industry, with real conversations about labels, touring, marketing, and what it actually takes to build a career as an artist. It’s all about giving you practical, real-world advice from people working in the business every day. We’re excited to share this episode with you, and don’t worry — we’ll be back with our regular On The Porch format next week. You can also head over to the mastered. feed to catch the rest of the series. Mike Denney has spent over 30 years in the music industry, working at major labels like Sony Music and Universal Music Canada before founding MDM Recordings. In this episode, Mike and Jenna dive into what labels are actually looking for when they sign artists — and what it really takes to be ready for that moment. They talk about building a strong foundation as an independent artist, the importance of work ethic, developing your brand and identity, and why not every artist is ready for radio or a record deal as early as they think. Mike also shares insight into how the industry spots emerging talent, common mistakes artists make, and why patience, consistency, and long-term thinking are key to building a sustainable career. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to get signed — or whether you’re actually ready — this episode is a must-listen. The Blue Collar Songwriter with Braden Lam

Send us Fan Mail This week, Jenna sat down with Braden Lam for coffee and a conversation about his career in music. Braden grew up in Uxbridge, Ontario, but has called Halifax home for a decade. He headed East to go to school for Biology & Environmental Science at Dalhousie. He immersed himself in the Halifax and East Coast music scene, and has enjoyed living next to the Atlantic ever since. Braden was first introduced to our radars when he was a semifinalist in SiriusXM's Top of the Country contest but has been cutting his teeth since his university years. RELATED: Braden Lam is a Front Porch Artist to Watch in 2026... We talked a lot about his debut album The Cloudmaker's Cry, which is a nod to the difficulty of navigating early adulthood. We also talked about the side quest business he and his wife started during the pandemic (listen to find out).  We talked about Folk as a genre and finding his sound through some of the late 2000s, early 2010s folk music. His sound balances these influences with some contemporary country. Braden's exciting announcement recently was his signing of a major record deal with Universal Music Cananda! He's excited to be working with a large team and working on his next album. Braden is currently on tour with School House for the Freewheelin' Field Trip tour for March. - We’re so excited to welcome you back for Season 5 of On The Porch with Front Porch  Music.  If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review, and subscribe … it’s one of the easiest ways to support the show and helps more listeners find us. Paradise and Hurricanes … and an ice storm in Nashville with Brad Rempel of High Valley

Send us Fan Mail High Valley has been around …a lot longer than you think! The family band started long before their first album in 2010.  We chatted with Brad Rempel about the early days of High Valley, as in when he was just four years old, and where the band is today.  High Valley has become a household name across Canadian country music families. From hits like “Grew Up On That”, “Make You Mine”, and “She’s With Me”, the band has collected accolades over the years spanning across not just Canada, but the United States as well. They’ve been nominated for ACM, CMT and JUNO Awards and have earned multiple CCMA Awards.  Brad recently scored his first US number one as a songwriter on Josh Ross’ “Single Again”. We chatted about this, along with his balance with being a football dad and artist, and the compromise he made very early in his career to be a parent first. The band hits the road for all of March across Canada on the Paradise & Hurricanes tour. -  We’re so excited to welcome you back for Season 5 of On The Porch with Front Porch Music.  If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review, and subscribe … it’s one of the easiest ways to support the show and help new listeners find us! You Can Make Anything Happen with Tenille Townes

Send us Fan Mail Tenille Townes is one of Canada's most decorated Country music artists. With 17 Canadian Country Music Awards, 2 JUNO Awards, and 2 Academy of Country Music Awards, she has navigated the the music industry for over ten years. Her breakout single "Somebody's Daughter" has been a mainstay in Canadian country music. We talked about the timeless impact of this and "Jersey on the Wall".  We also talked about the roller coaster of a year she's had, transitioning back to being an independent artist, and the feelings around that. She's really felt the sense of community and embrace from her fans during this transition. Tenille's newest single "enabling" is a self-produced, stripped back song that kicks off a new chapter, with an album in the works for sometime this year. Tenille will be hitting the road for the "Living Room Tour" this spring; just a girl and her guitar. - We’re so excited to welcome you back for Season 5 of On The Porch with Front Porch Music.  If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review, and subscribe … it’s one of the easiest ways to support the show and help new listeners find us! 5. Old Clothes in the Attic and a Drum Kit in the Living Room with School House

    JAN 20

Old Clothes in the Attic and a Drum Kit in the Living Room with School House

Send us Fan Mail School House is a folk band from Ottawa comprised of Joel, Mitch, and Dave. It's hard to sum up how their friendship's all connected and led them to become roommates and live in an old school house - but they tell us everything in our episode of the podcast. From the drum kit in the living room, to exploring the attic and finding an old box of clothes; to that box of clothes becoming part of their identity. The band recorded their first album right inside the old school house they lived in - that and a number of loud parties involving 300 lbs of old speakers, and a few more antics happened in that house. We had a great time chatting with School House about their musical influences and upbringing, winning Mariposa Music Fest's Artist Showcase and following that up with winning the Boots and Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase in 2025. This year, the band has a lot on the go.  They just dropped their brand new single "Live While I'm Alive", with their second full length album, Homeland releasing February 27th. You can also catch the band on tour with their pal (and another Front Porch Artist to Watch), Braden Lam this spring! Keep up with all things School House on Instagram and TikTok. -  We’re so excited to welcome you back for Season 5 of On The Porch with Front Porch Music.  If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review, and subscribe ... it’s one of the easiest ways to support the show and helps more listeners find us. 6. "This Is the Chapter I’ve Been Waiting For” with MacKenzie Porter

"This Is the Chapter I’ve Been Waiting For” with MacKenzie Porter

Send us Fan Mail Welcome back for the Season 5 premiere of On The Porch with Front Porch Music! A brand new season, a fresh chapter for the podcast, and an episode that perfectly sets the tone for what’s ahead. We’re kicking things off with a multi-CCMA nominated, back to back Female Artist of the Year, multi-instrumentalist, and 6-time number one at Canadian country radio. With a credit reel like that, we're more than excited to have MacKenzie Porter to kick off Season 5.  A Canadian country star, Nashville-based artist, actress, and mom joins us for an honest, wide-ranging conversation about creativity, career evolution, and doing things on your own terms. In this episode, MacKenzie takes us back to her roots in Medicine Hat, Alberta, where growing up in a musical family laid the foundation for everything that followed. From classical training at a young age to chasing big dreams far from home, her story is one built on family support, resilience, and trusting her instincts. We also dive into how motherhood has influenced her career ... not by slowing her down, but by sharpening her focus and creativity. MacKenzie shares what it really looks like to balance family life with touring, recording, and acting, and why she hopes her story encourages other women in the industry to believe they don’t have to choose one or the other. Another highlight of our chat was recounting the insane 2025 that happened for Thelma and James, the band she formed alongside her husband. What started as a spontaneous creative moment turned into a full-fledged project, reminding us that some of the best ideas come when you stop following the rules, or throw them out entirely. We also talk about what’s next for MacKenzie, including new music, an upcoming tour with Luke Combs, and her growing role in the series 9-1-1: Nashville.  Follow MacKenzie Porter on TikTok and Instagram.  -  We’re so excited to welcome you back for Season 5 of On The Porch with Front Porch Music.  If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review, and subscribe ... it’s one of the easiest ways to support the show and helps more listeners find us.
