Important Disclaimer: IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS EXPERIENCING A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS, INCLUDING THE EXPRESSION OF SUICIDAL IDEATION, CALL THE MENTAL HEALTH HOTLINE: 988 OR CALL 911 FOR YOUR LOCAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM.  This episode is for anyone and everyone willing and able to listen because suicide is something that affects us all, even if you have not dealt with it first hand. In this episode, I’ll talk about what I believe EVERYONE needs to know and hear about suicide and suicidal ideation so that we can be prepared with the right knowledge so that we can help the people we care about.  The things everyone should know that are discussed in this episode:  The seriousness of suicide: statistics regarding suicide, especially youth  How suicide, suicide attempts, and even suicidal ideation are all traumatic events, even according to the DSM-5, and how professional mental health care is needed for anyone affected either personally experiencing suicidal ideation or knows someone who has  How suicidal ideation happens (nervous system dysregulation, spiritual concerns) Debunking some of the common negative conceptions towards people who express suicidal ideation Embedded throughout the entire episode are some practical things to do or say if you have already experienced the trauma of suicide (either from yourself or someone you know), which will all be explained much more thoroughly in a future episode.  Statistics written out:  https://www.cdc.gov/suicide/facts/index.html The number of suicides was about one death every 11 minutes  13.2 million adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.8 million planned an attempt, and 1.6 million attempted  It was among the top 9 leading causes of death  It is the SECOND leading cause of death for people ages 10-14 and 25-34. (My stomach twists in just writing that). (The first leading cause is unintentional accidents for both age groups.) DSM-5 definition of trauma is this:  “ “The person was exposed to: death, threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violence, in the following way(s): Direct exposure Witnessing the trauma Learning that the trauma happened to a close relative or close friend Indirect exposure to aversive details of the trauma, usually in the course of professional duties (e.g., first responders, medics) Here’s a breakdown of what’s in this episode: Trigger Warning (01:20) Seriousness of Suicide (01:45) CDC Statistics (02:36) How big of a trauma it is (05:25) - DSM-5 definition of trauma (06:30) - How to address the trauma of it (08:55) - What to do? (09:10) - Talking to a friend isn’t enough (09:50) How does someone get to the point of being suicidal (14:35)  - Nervous system ladder (16:35) - When the sympathetic energy stops working (19:05)  - Freeze response and its implication for suicidal ideation (19:42)  Spiritual aspect/implications (31:35)  - Deliverance is not enough (33:12)  Negative perspectives (36:30) - Attention-seeking behavior (37:10) - “Being dramatic”  (40:35) - Selfish (43:30) What happens to your nervous system when you hear (46:20) Summary of what to do and what not to do if someone expresses suicidal ideation (50:00) Conclusion (51:01) Click here for the blog mentioned Contact me at: reanna@ac4ek.com Everything in this episode and future episodes are for informational purposes only, they are not intended to treat, prevent, or diagnose any type of mental health condition.
