Just Words – Brides March: Domestic Violence, Warning Signs & Why Men Need to Show Up

Brides March Executive Director Lethy Denise and Christopher join us for a conversation about domestic violence, loss, relationships, warning signs and why men need to be part of the conversation. For Lethy, this work is deeply personal. Her aunt, Gladys Ricart, helped raise her before her life was taken. Her death became part of the story behind Brides March and a movement that continues every September 26. Lethy shares what losing her aunt meant to her family and why the impact of taking one life can extend across generations. We talk about why telling someone in an abusive relationship to “just leave” ignores the financial, emotional and practical realities they may be facing, what it actually means to support someone who isn’t ready to leave and why leaving itself can be an especially dangerous moment. The conversation also turns toward men. What role should men play in confronting domestic violence? How do ideas about masculinity, providing, relationships and obsession shape our behavior? And how can men become part of the solution instead of treating domestic violence as an issue that only women need to discuss? We also get into community trauma, shame, documenting abuse, resources for survivors, learning how to hold space for someone experiencing loss and the warning signs we sometimes mistake for love. We close with a call for men, women and young people to show up for Brides March on September 26, and with Ron reflecting on one of his biggest takeaways from the conversation: sometimes the most important thing you can learn is how much more you still need to learn. Just Words – Darlenis Duran aka DEE DEE: Good Art, Bad Healthcare & AI Girlfriend

Actor, writer and teaching artist Dee Duran joins us for a conversation that starts with theater but quickly becomes about much more. We talk about her work in Repro Eco: Tomorrow Is Now, why getting people to actually show up for theater can be so difficult, who gets access to the arts and who actually gets paid behind the scenes. Dee takes us through her journey into acting, the transition from theater to film and what it was like taking on the role of the mother of a school shooter. We also get into The Blue Room, AI relationships, rom-coms and her upcoming project Swipe Right. Later, the conversation gets more personal as Dee opens up about endometriosis, writing from her own experiences and the moment she realized she had been teaching other people to write while putting her own writing aside. From healthcare and food to stress, acupuncture, microplastics and the systems affecting our bodies, this one goes in a lot of directions while somehow finding its way back to the same place: creating work that means something and putting more of what we want to see into the world. Just Words – UPTOWN VOICES: WHO GETS TO TELL THE STORY OF UPTOWN? | PART 2

Led Black and Octavio Blanco return to continue our conversation about Uptown politics, community, media and what it means to actually hold the people representing us accountable. We pick up with the fallout from the NY-13 congressional race before getting into campaign money, volunteers, political influence and the role authenticity plays in organizing. From there, the conversation expands beyond Uptown into Latin America, the Dominican Republic and Haiti, before turning the lens back on ourselves: Where do we get our information? Who do we trust? And how do independent platforms like Uptown Voices survive and grow? We close with a conversation about speaking up even when it’s uncomfortable, making your voice heard and trying not to lose our humanity in the process. Just Words – UPTOWN VOICES: WHO GETS TO TELL THE STORY OF UPTOWN? | PART 1

What happens when the people documenting your neighborhood are also living through its biggest changes? Ron and Haydee sit down with Led Black and Octavio Blanco of Uptown Voices for Part 1 of a two-part conversation about hyper-local media, community ownership, housing, harm reduction, neighborhood and district politics, and what it means to keep an eye on Washington Heights when the rest of the city isn't paying attention. We get into the evolution of Uptown Voices, the difference between being a podcast and being a local news source, sitting in the press pool, and why hyper-local journalism matters. Led and Octavio also take us through their own Uptown timelines, what they've watched change over the years, and how their experiences eventually led to the creation of Uptown Voices. Then the conversation gets deeper. We talk community land trusts, the rental market, vacant apartments and storefronts, the opioid crisis, the "heroin corridor," safe injection sites, and the bigger question behind harm reduction: Harm reduction for whom? And as everything seems to be happening at once, we get into local news coverage, the congressional race, and why having people on the ground telling Uptown's stories actually matters. But this is only Part 1 of 2. We hope you enjoy!
