Socrates on the Mountain

The only thing I know is that I know nothing, so... let's talk! Maybe, if we're lucky, we'll discover something! Philosophy, History, Politics, Society, Books, Games, and the Great Outdoors? Seems like a real mixed bag, huh? Well, that's only scratching the surface. Join me as I keep the Socratic Spirit alive discovering amazing things through great conversations and self-discovery.

    Afghanistan, AQ, and Other Things

What is up, Ghosts? We're back and keeping to the schedule! Hopefully it stays that way. Anyway, in this one we get into some current issues with what's happening in Afghanistan, population decline, and some other stuff. We also preview topics for our next couple episodes which we think y'all will enjoy!

The Return of Martin Guerre / And the Podcast!

Sorry we've been gone for so long! Life happens and things come up that demand all your attention, but things have calmed down and were excited to get back into it. Sticking with the theme of returning, Chris decided to look at the story The Return of Martin Guerre by historian Natalie Davis. It's an amusing and dramatic real-life story from 16th century France revolving around the lives of two men, one woman, and one trial. Did the stars align, or were they crossed? Find out in the return episode of Socrates on the Mountain!

    The Last Deployment Project

So... this one didn't go according to plan for a couple of reasons, but that doesn't mean it's bad.  Instead of talking about what we originally had planned, we talk about The Last Deployment Project.  What's that?  It's an initiative I started a few months ago to document the voices of the Marines and other personnel who were on the ground in Kabul, Afghanistan during the final withdraw in August 2021.  I warn you now, it's nothing like our previous episode, but we firmly believe that this project is of the utmost importance for both preserving memory and, perhaps, preserving life.  As always, feel free to reach out to us at Socrates.Mountain@gmail.com.  Hope you enjoy and we'll catch you ghosts on the next one!

    Diogenes the Cynic

Well folks, I think we did it!  Not to brag, but I think this might be the best episode we've done to date.  Join us as we go over the life of one of the most "colorful" (putting it lightly) philosopher's of ancient Greece: Diogenes of Sinope.  It was a great time recording and we hope you have a great time listening!  Please, if you like it, share it around and leave us a review wherever you listen.  Also, feel free to email us at socrates.mountain@gmail.com with suggestions for either topics to discuss or people to invite on.  Don't run from nature.  Man is born in nature.  Man is a part of nature.

Education Part 1: The Rambling One

Sorry for the late upload!  Went to bed last night and completely forgot.  Anyway, here's the first of what will probably be many episodes about education.  In this one we let you know how we really feel about the state of education from our own experience as well as some of the things I've discovered while researching for my Master's thesis.  We hope you enjoy it and feel free to share parts of your own experience (past or present) with American education by emailing us at Socrates.Mountain@gmail.com and we'll talk about it on the next one!  See you ghosts next time!

    The Marine Corps and Creativity

Yet another episode where I (Chris) sit down and talk with one of buddies from the Corps.  Hope y'all enjoy listening to this one as much as I did enjoying it.  Shell Boy was a Light Armored Vehicle Mechanic (2147) that I had the pleasure of working with and is honestly one of the funniest guys I know and a lot smarter than he lets on.  We BS a lot about our experience at our old unit as well as talk about how necessary it is to be creative to get through some of the hardest challenges life can throw at you, and what might make humans stand apart from the rest of the animals. Hope y'all are doing well, and don't be afraid to send an email to socrates.mountain@gmail.com with any topics you want to hear discussed!

    Episode 5: Mamoru Hosoda's Belle

I'll apologize upfront for all the extra background noise.  We were watching the family dog for the week and she just had to be part of the action.  Other than that, join us as we discuss Mamoru Hosoda's most recent feature film Belle.  There's a lot to talk about and it is very relevant to today's world.  Hope y'all enjoy the longest episode thus far!

Episode 4: Creativity and Nerding With the Boys

Once again keeping it hot and loose, this time with the boys!  Join me and two of my best buddies as we talk about creativity, pop-culture, and other random things.  Also, despite what Ware says, this will still be a monthly thing.  Unfortunately, I have neither the time nor the resources to upload more often.  On that note, sorry for missing last month, but we assure you we'll try hard not to let it happen again.  Hope all you ghosts are staying safe and learning something along the way.  Have a good one!
