Behind the Scenes of Sasha Graham’s Ghosts with Catherine Mary Stewart

This week on Retro Life 4 You, we welcome the wonderful Catherine Mary Stewart for a conversation that takes us beyond her iconic acting career and behind the camera! Fans know Catherine from ’80s favorites like The Last Starfighter, Night of the Comet, Weekend at Bernie’s, and Mischief, but Catherine has also stepped into the director’s chair and explored a very different side of storytelling. In this episode, Catherine talks with us about directing Sasha Graham’s Ghost Stories and Tarot, working alongside renowned tarot expert and author Sasha Graham, and bringing Sasha’s unique combination of supernatural storytelling, tarot, mystery, and the unexplained to the screen. We discuss how Catherine became involved with the project, what attracted her to Sasha’s stories, their creative collaboration, and what it was like for Catherine to approach the material from a director’s perspective rather than as an actress. We’ll also talk about Catherine’s evolution as a filmmaker, what she has learned behind the camera, and how decades of experience as an actress have influenced the way she directs and works with performers. And, of course, we’ll take a trip down memory lane and touch on Catherine’s incredible career and her place in some of the most beloved cult classics of the 1980s. It’s a conversation about acting, directing, tarot, ghost stories, creativity, and taking on new challenges with one of our favorite faces from the ’80s. The Replacements: Why Keanu Reeves' Football Movie Still Wins

The story takes place during a professional football players' strike. With the playoffs approaching, the fictional Washington Sentinels suddenly need an entire team of replacement players. Team owner Edward O'Neil turns to former coach Jimmy McGinty, played by Gene Hackman. McGinty agrees—but only if he gets to choose his own players. At the top of his list is Shane Falco, played by Keanu Reeves. Falco was once a promising quarterback, but after a disastrous college performance, his football career fell apart. By the time McGinty finds him, he's scraping barnacles off boats. But McGinty sees something in Falco that Falco doesn't necessarily see in himself. So begins one of the strangest recruiting drives in movie history. Major League Review: Can You Believe This Movie is From 1989?

We revisit the Major League movie to see how a team meant to lose became one of the greatest underdog sports team stories. This 1989 baseball film remains a staple of the genre, mixing slapstick humor with the quintessential sports comedy formula. We break down the plot where an owner tries to sabotage her own roster, only to create a squad of misfits that fans still love decades later. Whether you are a die-hard fan of the sport or just love a classic underdog story, this breakdown captures why the film works. We explore the unique dynamics of the team and how the production balanced genuine baseball stakes with comedic relief. By looking at the character arcs and the intentional failures that led to unexpected success, we provide a fresh perspective on this cult classic. If you enjoy our trip down memory lane, please consider following the podcast on your favorite platform. Today Is a Good Day to Rewind: Revisiting Flatliners

Released by Columbia Pictures on August 10, 1990, Flatliners is a science-fiction psychological horror thriller directed by Joel Schumacher and written by first-time feature screenwriter Peter Filardi. The premise is wonderfully simple and immediately dangerous: five ambitious medical students deliberately stop one another’s hearts, hold each other in clinical death for longer and longer intervals, and then attempt resuscitation—all to learn whether consciousness survives death. Nelson Wright begins the experiment as a bold scientific quest and a grab for glory. Joe Hurley sees it as another thrill. Rachel Mannus wants answers about the father she lost. David Labraccio is skeptical but curious, while Randy Steckle becomes the practical voice in a group that keeps ignoring common sense. Each trip produces vivid visions, but the real horror begins after they wake. Their past guilt returns in physical, punishing form, turning the movie from a near-death mystery into a story about accountability, confession, and forgiveness. The Abyss: How They Filmed the Impossible in 1989

Released in August 1989, The Abyss is a science-fiction adventure, survival thriller, Cold War drama, and bruised love story all at once. James Cameron wrote and directed it, with Gale Anne Hurd producing, Mikael Salomon handling cinematography, and Alan Silvestri composing the score. The story begins when the U.S. nuclear submarine Montana mysteriously sinks near the Cayman Trough. With a hurricane closing in and Soviet ships moving toward the wreck, the Navy sends a SEAL team to Deep Core, an experimental underwater oil-drilling platform. The civilian crew is led by Virgil “Bud” Brigman, played by Ed Harris. The platform’s designer—and Bud’s estranged wife—Dr. Lindsey Brigman, played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, arrives with the military team. The mission appears to be a dangerous salvage operation. Then Lindsey sees a strange light moving beneath the water. As the storm cuts Deep Core off from the surface and SEAL commander Hiram Coffey begins to unravel under pressure, the crew realizes the ocean may contain an intelligence that has been watching humanity very closely. Why You Need to Rewatch Stand By Me

Released in 1986 and set during Labor Day weekend in 1959, Stand by Me follows four 12-year-old friends living in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Oregon. After Vern Tessio overhears that the body of a missing boy has been discovered near the railroad tracks, he tells his friends Gordie Lachance, Chris Chambers, and Teddy Duchamp. Hoping to become local heroes, the boys invent an excuse for their parents and begin a two-day journey to find the body. What begins as an adventure quickly becomes something much more personal. Each boy carries his own fears and problems: Gordie feels invisible to his grieving parents, Chris worries that his family’s reputation has already determined his future, Teddy idolizes an abusive father, and Vern desperately wants to belong. The movie is based on Stephen King’s novella The Body, originally published in his 1982 collection Different Seasons. Unlike the supernatural horror normally associated with King, this is a deeply human story about grief, friendship, fear, and the painful realization that childhood cannot last forever.
