He visited Japan for two weeks in February, 2025. EASY ENGLISH GRAMMAR POINT for EPISODE #15 For today’s episode, please use the interview as a review of the grammar points covered in all the episodes so far. EASY ENGLISH USAGE POINT for EPISODE #15 For the English usage point, I would like to point out a phrase that Anthony uses. He uses the phrase, “get a kick out of” This phrase is used by English speakers when they want to describe something that they think will be enjoyable for themselves or for another person. Listen near the end of today’s podcast for when Anthony says that he thinks that his kids would “really get a kick out of a visit to Japan”. He visited Japan for two weeks in February, 2025. EASY ENGLISH GRAMMAR POINT for EPISODE #14 For today’s episode, please listen to the way Travis and Kris talk about abilities. Especially, listen for the phrase “be able to”. This phrase is used to describe abilities or things you are allowed to do. For example: “You need to be able to get past communication problems.” or “I’m able to go to Japan this summer.” EASY ENGLISH USAGE POINT for EPISODE #14 The second thing I would like to focus on in today’s interview is a phrase that Travis uses during the interview. The phrase is “for the most part”. This phrase suggests that something usually happens or happens in most cases. It is a generalization that the speaker uses so the listener knows how often you can expect a certain action to happen. For example: “For the most part, people in Japan focus on small details.” COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS FOR EPISODE #14 * What year of study is Travis completing this year? * During his visit, where did Travis stay at night? * Travis says there are little or no “what” in Japan? * What is Travis’s biggest challenge while in Japan? * What type of barrier has Travis encountered while in Japan? * What food did Travis say he missed the most? * Where does Kris say you can find good Italian restaurants in Japan? * Does Travis like hot or cold soba? * What do Kris and Travis say people in Japan focus on? * Why did some students join Travis for meals? In English we often use words like “best” or “most” that function as adjectives or adverbs. For example: “I like Gifu the most” or “Tom is my best friend.” EASY ENGLISH USAGE POINT for EPISODE #13 The second thing I would like to focus on in today’s interview is a review from Episode #1 of Season #2. The word, “actually” when it is used at the beginning of a sentence to indicate something true that might be unexpected. For example: “I went to the store BECAUSE I needed to buy some clothing.” or “BECAUSE public transportation is used so much, there is a greater effort to keep it clean.” EASY ENGLISH USAGE POINT for EPISODE #11 The second thing I would like to focus on in today’s interview is how Reuben uses the word “warm” to describe friendliness. The adjective “warm” is most often used for temperature, however, there is another meaning in English that relates to friendliness. In English we use the word “that” as a relative pronoun quite often. For example: “There are many people THAT travel to Japan.” or “My brother is the person THAT helps me the most.” EASY ENGLISH USAGE POINT for EPISODE #10 The second thing I would like to focus on in today’s interview is how Kris uses the word “maximize” to describe the act of making the most of something. In English we use the words “maximize” and “minimize” as verbs to describe how we will increase or decrease the possible amount of something. These two words are used a lot in English. “IF” is used to introduce a possible or unreal situation or condition and “WHEN” is used to refer to the time of a future situation or condition that we are sure about. For example: “If I am not busy tomorrow, I will go kayaking.” and “When I’m older, I want to start playing more golf.” EASY ENGLISH USAGE POINT for EPISODE #8 The second thing I would like to focus on in today’s interview is how Steve and Kris use the word “originally” to describe a situation that existed first. For example: “I live in Japan now, but I am originally from Canada.” COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS FOR EPISODE #8 * How often does Steve play hockey now? * What day of the week does Steve play hockey? * What is Steve’s favorite hockey team? * How long did Steve do karate? * What Japanese sport does Steve enjoy watching the most? * What was Kris wearing when he met KONISHIKI? * Where did Steve meet KONISHIKI? * What sport did Steve try recently that he thought was very difficult? * What sport would Kris and Steve like to play more if they could? * What sport does Steve say is good to do with family?
