Juvenile Detention Is Declining, but Tennessee Won’t Let the Incarceration Gravy Train End

In this episode I discuss the declining rates of youth incarceration across the United States and the troubling realities facing young people in the juvenile justice system, particularly in Tennessee. Although youth incarceration has decreased by nearly 75% between 2000 and 2023, Tennessee’s is moving forward with efforts to build and expand juvenile detention facilities.    #juveniledetention #youthincarceration #prisonindustrialcomplex #detentioncenters #thepeoplesvoicepodcast Check out the webiste for more info http://treyevansthepeoplesvoice.com/     #thepeoplesvoicepodcast #social issues Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research

The Constitution Does Not Protect Your Right to Clean Water

On Sept 4th The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals federal appeals court ruled that the U.S. Constitution does not guarantee a right to clean drinking water.. The appeals court upheld a lower court’s dismissal of a lawsuit brought by Jackson, Mississippi, residents over the city’s 2022 lead-contaminated water system problems.  In this episode,I take a closer look at the court’s decision, the residents’ constitutional claims, and what the ruling could mean for communities facing unsafe drinking water. #cleanwater #jacksonmississippi #14thAmendment #cleanwaterforall #pollution #enviromentalracism #watercrisis Check out the webiste for more info http://treyevansthepeoplesvoice.com/     #thepeoplesvoicepodcast #social issues Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research

The Court Will Appoint You Lawyer, But It Aint Free

What happens when you can’t afford an attorney and the court appoints a public defender or court-appointed lawyer for you? Many people assume that means the legal representation is completely free—but that isn’t always the case. In this episode, I break down how public defender and court-appointed attorney fees can work, who may be responsible for paying them, and why these costs can sometimes come as a surprise. I’ll walk through the difference between having an attorney appointed by the court and having no financial responsibility at all, so you can better understand what to expect when facing a criminal case without the ability to hire private counsel. #courtappointedlawyer #publicdefender #courtfees #criminalcharges #mirandarights #sixthamendment Check out the webiste for more info http://treyevansthepeoplesvoice.com/     #thepeoplesvoicepodcast #social issues Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research

End of The EEO-1 Form? Job Applications Will Stop Asking About Race and Gender

In this episode, I examine the proposed end of EEO-1 reporting and the broader debate over race and gender questions in employment applications. EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas argues that categorizing workers by race and gender, conflicts with the principles of Title VII and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. What could this change mean for workplace discrimination, minorities, white male workers, and the future of equal employment enforcement? #EEOC #EEO1Form #TitleVII #jobapplications #race #discrimination    Check out the webiste for more info http://treyevansthepeoplesvoice.com/     #thepeoplesvoicepodcast #social issues Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research

Second Chance Rights: Redefining Life After A Criminal Record

In this episode, I take a closer look at initiatives and legislation over the last decade such as Clean Slate laws, Ban the Box laws, and firearm restoration rights. These change are giving individuals with criminal records new opportunities to regain access, restore certain rights, and move forward with their lives. I also examine the controversy surrounding Joshua Smith, a former convicted felon who served a five-year sentence for a drug conspiracy conviction before rising to become Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) #secondchancerights #cleanslatelaws #banthebox #criminalrecord #nonviolentfelonies #BOP Check out the webiste for more info http://treyevansthepeoplesvoice.com/     #thepeoplesvoicepodcast #social issues Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research

NIL Under Pressure: Agents, Regulations, and Federal Power

Recent changes surrounding NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals and athlete representation are creating new standards for how student-athletes can enter into NIL agreements and how agents can enter the profession. The goal is to provide greater transparency an accountability.  At the same time, there is a growing push toward a more federal approach to NIL regulation, which could create consistent rules across all states instead of having athletes and agents navigate different state laws.  I’ll look at whether these changes truly protect athletes—or give more control to the system behind the deals.   Check out the webiste for more info http://treyevansthepeoplesvoice.com/     #thepeoplesvoicepodcast #social issues Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research

Seized By The Police: The Crime of Civil Asset Forfeiture

In this episode, I explore the issue of civil asset forfeiture, a practice that can allow the government to seize property—including cash, cars, homes, bank accounts, jewelry, electronics, firearms, and even everyday belongings—without first convicting the owner of a crime. The process can leave Americans with fewer protections than they would receive in a criminal case and have lower standards of proof which can make it easier for the government to take ownership of property. I’ll also offer my recommendatons if anyone finds theirsevles in this sitiuation.   #civilAssetforfeiture #Governmentoverreach #Propertysearch Check out the webiste for more info http://treyevansthepeoplesvoice.com/     #thepeoplesvoicepodcast #social issues Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research
