    Mightier (Part 14): Is That Your Final Answer?

    What is the unforgivable sin? Can it be committed today? Is there any hope for someone who fears they have gone too far? These are some of the most searched questions about the Bible, and Mark chapter 3 gives us more clarity than most people realize. In this message from Mark 3, we explore the moment Jesus warns about a sin that cannot be forgiven. Two groups confront Jesus with opposite conclusions about who He is. His own family believes He has lost His mind. Religious leaders from Jerusalem accuse Him of casting out demons by the power of Satan. Jesus responds with a logical argument, a powerful illustration about binding the strong man, and a direct warning about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Here is what this passage actually teaches. In this passage, Jesus and His disciples are walking through a grain field on the Sabbath when the disciples pluck heads of grain to eat. The Pharisees immediately accuse them of breaking the law. But Jesus points out something important: the disciples were doing exactly what Mosaic law permitted in Deuteronomy 23. What they violated was not Scripture but the man-made traditions the Pharisees had layered on top of it. The Pharisees had constructed thirty-nine categories of prohibited Sabbath activities, building fence after fence around the commandment until the original purpose was buried. God gave the Sabbath as a gift, a reminder of rest and relationship with the Creator. The Pharisees turned it into a burden and made their rules more important than the heart of God behind the law. Jesus responds with one of the most significant declarations in the Gospels: the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. This title connects directly to Daniel chapter 7 and the coming Messiah.
