    Moving Through the Messy Middle

    The spectrum of perception around the purpose and value of horses has never been more vast.  On one end we have horses who are still a foundational tool for human survival—beasts of burden. On the other end we have horses who are honoured and revered as healers and wisdom holders.  We have horses who are forced to do whatever they are told. And we have horses who are given choice and voice. As people who want to see improvement in equine welfare, how do we navigate this incredible expanse? As professionals, how do we measure integrity and what it means to be an advocate?     The Power of Our Words

    In this solocast I explore the power our words have on our lives. There are many teachings that speak of the power of words—especially the spoken word.  I recently read the phrase, “Your word does not come back void.” That profound sentence sent me deep into contemplation and led me to exploring the implications of this teaching in relationship to horses. As humans, words are our primary form of communication. We speak to our horses all the time, yet we may not always be aware of the greater impact those words can have on them.  I hope this episode helps to shed some light on the power of our words and how we can use them consciously to create more love, compassion and well-being in the world.     “Horse first” has become a common phrase in the equine welfare movement.  It’s a perspective that means the horse is not only being considered, but that his or her needs are being put ahead of the human’s needs, wants or desires. Many wear it as a badge of honour—I certainly did. But is ‘horse first’ the final frontier? Or is there more beyond the notion of needing to put the horse ahead of the human as the pathway to avoid causing harm?     Joyful Horsemanship Through A Trauma-Informed Lens

    What does it mean to work with horses in a trauma-informed way? I am overjoyed to have had Poppy Peach on the podcast to dive deep into the multi-faceted and nuanced topic of trauma-informed horsemanship.  When I first learned about the trauma-informed methodology for horses, I assumed it was another one-size-fits-all methodology. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Poppy explains how she applies this work on both a species-specific and individual level that is tailored to each horse and each scenario. Poppy is such an incredible source of knowledge and wisdom on the subject, which led to a fantastic conversation about the theories and practical applications of this way of being with horses.  This was one of my favourite conversations I have ever had on the podcast!
