    195 The Beast of Jersey, Edward Paisnel

    Kevin takes the lead tonight! Edward Paisnel was born in 1925 on the island of Jersey in the English Channel — a small, quiet island that had been occupied by Nazi Germany during WWII and that most people associate with tax havens and dairy cows rather than one of the most disturbing criminal casesin British history. He was a married man, a father figure to foster children, a pillar of the community who dressed as Father Christmas at local events and was known to be kind to children. He was also, for eleven years, the most wanted man in Jersey — a serial rapist who stalked his victims at night in a handmade costume of nails and toads, broke into homes, and terrorized the island's population so thoroughly that families locked their doors for over a decade while police repeatedly came up empty. The episode covers his deeply strange early life, his marriage to a woman who ran a business catering to children, the bizarre occult paraphernalia found in a secret room in his home, the eleven-year investigation that couldn'tcatch him, and the accidental traffic stop in 1971 that finally ended it. It covers his trial, his conviction on multiple counts including rape and indecent assault, his 30-year sentence, his death in 1994, and the question that his case leaves open: how does a man live a double life that specific and that monstrous for over a decade while the people around him see nothing? It also covers the detail that his wife — who had run a business called Auntie Ivu's Party for children — claimed she had no idea. And the detail that searchers found a secret room in his home containing a correspondence with a Satanic church, a specially made jacket covered in nails and concrete, four live toads, and photographs.
