Live A Better Story - The Better Story Begins

Ever tell a kid to clean their room, and twenty minutes later they say "Done!" and it's suspiciously clean? Then you look under the bed and it's the whole bedroom. Some of us still do that. Not with a room. With our lives. In the finale of Live a Better Story, Pastor Johna walks through Nehemiah. The wall went up in fifty-two days, but the book keeps going, because the wall was never the point. The people were. Scripture: Nehemiah 6:15, Nehemiah 8:1-3, Hebrews 4:12, Hebrews 3:3-4, 2 Corinthians 5:17, John 19:30, Philippians 1:6. What To Do With Opposition

Live a Better Story, Week 3: Trowel in One Hand, Sword in the Other (Nehemiah 4–6)When you start building a better story, something always shows up to stop you. Nehemiah's builders worked with a trowel in one hand and a sword in the other, building and protecting at the same time. The key is knowing where to point the sword: your spouse, your kids and the people who hurt you aren't the real enemy, and Nehemiah kept his focus by refusing to come down off the wall for fights God never gave him. Jesus already beat the real enemy on the cross, so this week pick up your trowel, strap on your sword, and put down the battles that were never yours. "I am carrying on a great project. I cannot come down." (Nehemiah 6:3)

    Who's on your wall?

Nehemiah 3 is the chapter everybody skips. It reads like a phone book — a list of names and who built what — and most people get three verses in, decide it's boring, and jump to chapter 4. Don't. More than twenty-five times that chapter says "next to him" or "next to them." The wall didn't go up because Nehemiah was a hero. It went up because ordinary people took their places beside each other. The nobles of Tekoa had the money, the platform, and the connections, and when it came time to pick up a stone — crickets. A perfume maker with no masonry résumé did it instead. So the help you need may not come from the person you expected, and some of us are so locked in on who didn't show up that we're missing who God already put right next to us. Which means the question isn't only who's in your life. It's how much access you've handed them. Everybody can be loved, but everybody shouldn't get the blueprint. Who you build with shapes what you build. Week 2 of Live a Better Story. Last week you named the wall. This week, put a name beside it. How to get the life you really want

There are some seats you can stand up from. Then there are seasons you can't escape so easily — the marriage that feels distant, the money that follows you into every room, the spiritual life that looks fine on Sunday and feels empty on Tuesday. Nehemiah is serving in a Persian palace when word arrives that the people he loves are living behind a wall that isn't there anymore. The temple had been rebuilt. Families had come home. Business had resumed. But one broken thing left all of it exposed — and before Nehemiah touches a single stone, he lets God work on him. Then he rides out alone at night and inspects the whole wall, including the stretch by the garbage gate, because you can't build the life you really want while refusing to examine the life you actually have. Every one of us lives behind five walls: God, people, finances, health, work. One of them always needs repair. Walk all five this week, tell the truth about what you see, then circle the one thing that — if it got better — would make everything better. You can't fix your whole life at once. You rebuild it one wall at a time.

    Found People Find People

Jesus finds Philip, and two verses later Philip finds Nathanael — found people find people. Philip goes to a friend from his own street, gets a face ("Can anything good come from Nazareth?"), and doesn't defend or argue; he says three words: come and see. Jesus was already at work under Nathanael's fig tree before Philip ever showed up, which means you're not the argument — you're the ride. Their no is a reaction, not an answer, so send the text again and bring your one more to Welcome Home Sunday, September 13.
