    PART 2 | WHEN RADIO STARTS THE CONVERSATION Some of the most important conversations on radio aren't necessarily the easiest ones. In Part 2 of my 919FM On-Air Showcase, I look back at three interviews that demonstrate another side of what I try to do behind the microphone — create a space where difficult subjects can be explored, challenged and discussed openly. THE COLOURED COMMUNITY CONVERSATION Following the controversy surrounding an Open Chats Podcast episode in August 2025, which sparked widespread criticism over derogatory and offensive comments about South Africa's Coloured community, I brought together friends and representatives of the community to have a conversation about the issue. Rather than simply adding to the noise, the objective was to listen. What does it feel like when an entire community is stereotyped? Where do these perceptions come from? And how do we have difficult conversations about identity, culture and prejudice without becoming part of the problem? ANNA-MART VAN WYK I also sat down with Clinical Hypnotherapist and Neuro-Behavioural Life Coach Anna-Mart van Wyk, who holds DipCH and DipNeuroC qualifications and is registered with the International Coaching Council and the National Hypnotherapy Council in the UK. We explored the mind, behaviour and the ways in which our experiences can shape the way we think, react and live. GAVIN TUCKER And then there was author Gavin Tucker, whose book If You Won't Say It, I Will deliberately goes where many people won't. It's a sharp, humorous and provocative collection of essays tackling modern life, political correctness, social media, hypocrisy, cancel culture and the things people often think but aren't necessarily prepared to say out loud. The conversation was exactly what the title suggests — an opportunity to say it, discuss it and challenge it. They weren't about having the easiest conversation. They were about having the conversation.     PART 1 | THE ART OF THE CONVERSATION My time on air at 919FM has allowed me to do what I love most about radio — have meaningful conversations with people from completely different walks of life. In Part 1 of my 919FM On-Air Showcase, I look back at three conversations that, in very different ways, represent what I believe radio should be about: entertaining, challenging perceptions and telling stories that matter. Tom London — a conversation that allowed me to explore the person, the journey and the story behind the public persona. The Car Guard Conversation — I stepped away from the studio and had a conversation with a car guard about the realities of his job and the misconceptions that many of us carry about people who work on our streets every day. Sometimes the best way to challenge a perception is simply to listen. A Teacher's Perspective — I sat down with my sister, who has spent more than 30 years as a primary school teacher, to unpack the changing realities facing teachers and learners in a modern world. Education has changed dramatically, and so have the pressures on both sides of the classroom. People have stories worth hearing. That's the core of great radio. This is a snapshot of what I try to bring to the microphone: curiosity, empathy, honesty and the willingness to ask questions beyond the obvious.     What South African Radio Can Learn from SAFM Adelaide's Head of Content Matt O' Reilly

    On my recent trip to Australia, I was lucky enough to visit one of South Australia’s biggest stations, SAFM, and sit down with their Head of Content, Matthew O’ Reilly. We had a cool chat about the Australian market, content "policies", South African radio fluidity, listener attention and loyalty, dormant versus active audiences, and some added value banter around live-streaming events to audiences. As the Programme Manager of the legacy campus station, Tuks FM, back in South Africa, I am reviving our on-air listener presence and rebuilding an edgy, forward-thinking platform for young voices to call home. Today’s listener wakes up to a Spotify playlist, scrolls TikTok while getting ready for work, listens to a podcast during a commute, watches YouTube during lunch, engages with Instagram throughout the day, and only occasionally interacts with traditional broadcast media. The challenge facing broadcasters globally is therefore not simply audience acquisition—it is audience retention, audience engagement and audience habit formation. Australia has emerged as one of the most innovative radio markets in the world in adapting to this new reality. While many mature radio markets have struggled with audience fragmentation, Australian broadcasters have successfully evolved by reimagining the role of radio itself.
