    Country Music and the Catholic Church - CHNetwork Presents, Episode 43

    What do Catholicism and country music have to do with one another? After all, from Tom T. Hall's "Me and Jesus" to the Gospel albums of Elvis and Johnny Cash, the voices of country music are overwhelmingly Protestant, and overwhelmingly low-church in their expression. But a deeper look reveals some surprising connections and overlapping themes: the harsh reality of sin, a desire for confession, a reliance upon grace, and even the tension between being authentic or just trading on aesthetics. Neither country music nor Catholicism is satisfied with a disembodied understanding of God and what He is up to in the world. Matt Swaim talks with Bo Bonner and Dr. Terrence Sweeney about their experience of the intersection of country music and Catholicism, and why there is more that connects them than many Catholics or country music devotees may realize.     Both Christopher O'Keefe and Dr. Matthew Wiseman came from families whose love of the Scriptures led them to embrace the Hebrew Roots Movement, an expression of Christianity that takes very seriously the commandments of God the Old Testament, and has a unique way of understanding of what Christ meant when He said that He did not come to abolish the law, but fulfill it. They share how this reverence for the Hebrew Scriptures cultivated in them a desire to truly honor history and tradition; but also how their frustration with the way authority functioned in that world led them to go deeper, and brought them to a place they never imagined they'd end up: the Catholic Church.     A Convert's Guide to the Catholic Lectionary - CHNetwork Presents, Episode 40

    Catholics and many other liturgically-oriented Christian traditions use a lectionary model, following a three-year cycle of readings, which means the whole Church is reading the same Scriptures together every Sunday throughout the year.     In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI issued Anglicanorum coetibus, a historic move that provided a unique new avenue for Christians from the Anglican world to join the Catholic Church while keeping elements of their liturgical patrimony. As the first head of the Personal Ordinariate in the United States and Canada, Msgr. Jeffrey Steenson shares his background as a bishop in the Episcopal Church, the meetings with then-Cardinal Ratzinger that laid the foundation for Anglicanorum coetibus, and what it was like to have a front row seat to this extraordinary moment in Christian history.
