Grief, Grace, and a Cairo Wedding

Exhausted by grief and life, I’d already decided to miss my niece's wedding in Cairo. Then the phone rang. A story about saying yes anyway — whirling dervishes, hand-fasting ceremonies, doing my best at Arabic, and the surprising discovery that across ten countries and four continents, we're all the same.  Last October, I was running on empty. Six months after losing my mother, four months after clearing out her house, and still in the middle of planning where to scatter her ashes, I got word that my niece — living in Germany, engaged to a man from Egypt — was getting married in Cairo. I was thrilled for them. But at that moment, I just didn’t think I could summon the energy to attend their ceremony halfway across the world.  I’d already made up my mind to stay home and send my  husband as the family representative — until a phone call from my niece changed everything. In this episode, I share how a spontaneous "yes" turned into one of the most moving experiences of my life: officiating my niece's wedding at a 12th-century citadel in Cairo, surrounded by 100 guests from ten countries, a Zaffa dance procession, an actual whirling dervish, a Celtic hand-fasting ceremony, and my own valiant (if imperfect) attempt at an Arabic welcome. It's a story about grief and joy showing up in the same season of life, about the plans we make versus the ones that find us, and about a dance floor in Cairo that looked a lot like a dance floor back home. Revisting Cooking Up Courage — Chef Devin Finigan of Aragosta at Goose Cove

We're re-airing one of our favorite conversations: Season 4 guest Devin Finigan, chef and owner of Aragosta at Goose Cove in Maine. Since we first spoke with Devin, Food & Wine named Aragosta the #1 hotel for food and drink in the country, and her cookbook, A Kitchen on Goose Cove: Recipes from the Heart of Maine, has officially been released. This episode also holds special meaning for me, as I open up the episode with a tribute to my late mother, Sadie B — a lifelong food lover whose recipes, generosity, and "never let anyone leave hungry" spirit set the stage for a conversation with a guest who embodies that same philosophy through her cooking. Devin never went to culinary school. She dropped out of art school, followed her instincts, signed a restaurant lease she couldn't really afford, and built Aragosta into an award-winning destination — all while staying true to her own vision. If you've ever wondered what it looks like to take the unconventional path and make it work, this is the episode for you. Manifesto Connections “The riskiest thing you can do is play it safe” — leaving art school and signing her first restaurant lease on a handshake. “There is more than one right way in life” — no culinary school, no traditional path, and it worked anyway. “Constraints are opportunities” — building Goose Cove on a tight budget by leaning on local artisans, potters, and woodworkers.   Calls to Action Learn more about Aragosta at Goose Cove or make a reservation: aragostamain.com Follow Aragosta on Instagram: @aragosta.main Support our sponsor: Interabang Books — interabangbooks.com Watch Tricia's TEDx talk, “How I Redeemed 35 Years of Regret” — TriciaRoseBurt.com or https://youtu.be/KpMSGApoLKE?si=3-u3CaywtoWcKXIm Credits No Time to Be Timid is written and produced by Tricia Rose Burt. An Unconventional Force for Art

Last week I was invited to a VIP tour of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, guided by their Chief Curator. What I found was a woman who turned grief into one of the most unconventional art collections in American history — and who once glued tea-box tinfoil to her dining room walls because she liked the way it looked. I even got to stand two feet from a Rembrandt that survived the largest unsolved art heist in history! This is the story of Isabella Stewart Gardner, and why she knew the riskiest thing you can do is play it safe,. In this episode: - Who Isabella Stewart Gardner was, and why she remains one of the most unconventional art collectors in American history - How personal loss — the death of her young son Jackie — led Isabella to start traveling and collecting art - The artists and friends in Isabella's orbit, including John Singer Sargent, Henry James, and Johannes Brahms - A close encounter with Rembrandt's 1629 self-portrait — the only surviving piece from Isabella's original five Rembrandts - The story of the 1990 Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist, the largest unsolved art theft in history - A recommendation for the podcast "Last Seen" by Kelly Horan and WBUR, which covers the heist in depth - The surprising detail about silver tea-box tinfoil glued to Isabella's dining room walls — and why it made me love her even more 👉 Get the free manifesto: triciaroseburt.com/manifesto Subscribe to the No Time To Be Timid Youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/@triciaroseburt www.triciaroseburt.com

He's the Soundtrack to My Life

What does Bruce Springsteen have to do with the No Time to Be Timid Manifesto? Everything. I recently caught Bruce live at TD Garden in Boston—from the second to last row—and couldn't stop thinking about how his 50-year career checks off principle after principle from the manifesto. From singing for three hours straight at 76 years old, to speaking truth to power since the 1980s, to calling an entire arena to be their best selves, Bruce Springsteen is a masterclass in creative courage. This one's personal, it's energizing, and it just might make you want to blast Badlands on your next long drive. --- In This Episode - What it felt like to be in the very back of TD Garden (and end up on the big screen) - How Bruce checks off three key principles from the No Time to Be Timid Manifesto: - Creativity is not a frivolous pursuit — 50+ years of music, storytelling, and human connection   - The riskiest thing you can do is play it safe — speaking against injustice and power since the 1980s without worrying about who he alienates   - There is courage in community — what it looks like when an artist calls an entire arena to rise up together - Why 76 years old and three hours nonstop is the ultimate "no excuses" reminder --- Manifesto Principles Featured in This Episode #1 — The riskiest thing you can do is play it safe #4 — Creativity is not a frivolous pursuit #9 — There is courage in community Download the free No Time to Be Timid Manifesto: [www.triciaroseburt.com/manifesto](https://www.triciaroseburt.com/manifesto) ---   Website: [www.triciaroseburt.com](https://www.triciaroseburt.com)   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@triciaroseburt   Follow along: @triciaroseburt   Questions? podcast@triciaroseburt.com ---   Enjoying the Podcast?
