Labor Day and Dolly Parton Tribute Bonus Episode: 9 to 5 (1980)

WORKING 9 TO 5… WHAT A WAY TO MAKE A LIVING! For our Labor Day Special, Steve and Megan are punching the clock and heading back to 1980 to revisit the workplace comedy 9 to 5, starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dabney Coleman. Welcome to Consolidated Companies, where Franklin Hart Jr. is the kind of boss who makes you wonder whether getting fired might actually be a promotion. After Violet, Judy, and Doralee finally reach their breaking point, a little after-work bonding turns into revenge fantasies, an accidental poisoning, a stolen corpse, a kidnapping—and eventually one of the most unusual workplace revolutions in movie history. In this episode, we're talking about the Good, the Bad & the Ugly of 9 to 5, Dolly's scene-stealing movie debut, the incredible chemistry between the three leads, Hart's spectacular awfulness, those wonderfully bizarre revenge fantasies, and whether the movie's workplace commentary still feels relevant more than 45 years later. Plus, we'll fire up The Way Back Machine for a trip to 1980, dig into History & Fun Facts, consider a few candidates for Nostalgia Amnesty, and finally deliver Our Verdict: 🟢 CHILDHOOD SAVED? 🟡 CHILDHOOD SURVIVED? 🔴 CHILDHOOD RUINED? And because it's Labor Day, we're asking the important workplace question: If you could implement ONE of Violet, Judy, and Doralee's workplace reforms at your job tomorrow, which one would you choose? 👇 Tell us in the comments—and while you're there, tell us your favorite Dolly Parton movie! 🎙️ Stop Ruining My Childhood Podcast Nostalgia is not a crime. Road House (1989): Steve Loved It. Megan Has Questions

This week, we revisit the original Road House, starring Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliott, Kelly Lynch, and Ben Gazzara, with behind-the-scenes fun facts, strange history, and a surprisingly contentious debate over just how well this movie holds up. Road House (1989) is one of the most gloriously over-the-top action movies of the ’80s—but there’s a lot more behind Patrick Swayze’s bar-brawling cult classic than flying fists and throat-ripping. We dig into the real-life inspirations behind the film, including the writer’s experiences as a bouncer and the story of a notorious local bully whose death became the subject of a remarkable real-life case when an entire town seemed unwilling to say who was responsible. We also get into Patrick Swayze’s feelings about Dalton’s infamous mullet, the making of the movie, and how Road House became a beloved action cult classic. Steve explains why he absolutely loved this movie as a 12-year-old, Megan argues that Sam Elliott is hotter than Patrick Swayze and steals the entire film, Megan realizes midway through that one of the characters was blind the entire time, and things get heated when we tackle the movie’s treatment and objectification of women. Is Road House ridiculous? Absolutely. Is it awesome? Steve has thoughts. Does Megan agree? Not necessarily. Join us for Road House (1989) trivia, movie history, behind-the-scenes stories, nostalgia, Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliott, questionable ’80s gender politics, and one very contentious trip back to the Double Deuce. Masters of the Universe (2026) — Does He-Man Finally Have the Power?

By the Power of Grayskull…we're going back to Eternia! Last episode, Stop Ruining My Childhood revisited Masters of the Universe (1987)—Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, the Cosmic Key and that strangely long vacation from Eternia—and handed the movie a C-. Now it's time to see what nearly 40 years and a new generation can do with He-Man. This week, Steve and Megan review Masters of the Universe (2026) and ask whether the new movie finally delivers the live-action adventure fans have been waiting for. ⚔️ Does the new He-Man have the power? 💀 How does this version of Skeletor measure up? 🏰 Does Eternia finally get the attention it deserves? 🐯 Did the filmmakers understand what fans love about this universe? 🎬 And is the new movie actually BETTER than the wonderfully weird 1987 version? We'll break down the good, the bad and the ugly, dig into some history and fun facts, and decide whether any questionable choices deserve a coveted… 📜 NOSTALGIA AMNESTY! Then it's time for Our Verdict, as we give Masters of the Universe (2026) its final grade and answer the question at the heart of every episode: 🟢 CHILDHOOD SAVED? 🟡 CHILDHOOD SURVIVED? 🔴 CHILDHOOD RUINED? And after reviewing BOTH movies, we're finally ready to settle the battle we've been building toward: MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: 1987 vs. 2026 ⚔️ WHO HAS THE POWER? Listen now, then tell us which version YOU choose! 🎙️ Stop Ruining My Childhood — Revisiting the movies, television and pop culture we grew up loving to find out if they're really as good as we remember.

Masters of the Universe (1987): The Infamous He-Man Movie

Masters of the Universe (1987) gave us Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, Frank Langella as Skeletor, almost none of the characters we knew from the cartoon and toys, and a production so troubled that Cannon Films literally ran out of money before they finished making it. What could possibly go wrong? This week, we're revisiting the live-action He-Man and the Masters of the Universe movie and the absolutely insane story of how it made it to the big screen. We talk about Cannon Films' financial problems, the shrinking budget, the missing characters and locations from the Mattel toys and He-Man cartoon, Dolph Lundgren's performance, and Frank Langella's surprisingly committed Skeletor. Then, we go beat by beat through the movie itself. Why does a He-Man movie spend so much time on Earth? Why is Courteney Cox here? What exactly does the Cosmic Key do? And why does the script seem determined to keep He-Man away from everything that made He-Man... He-Man? We remembered the cartoon. We remembered Skeletor. We definitely remembered the toys. But did we remember Masters of the Universe? And, in the end, did it ruin our childhood?
