Taking Back our Corners - We Own this City podcast

Sooo glad to have these guys back on a crime drama (vs garbage like TWD and comic/IP/scifi). It would have had a little more of the BM production value I’m used to with some kind of music intro (a la GOT and BB), but considering they’ve all but given up on BCS for some reason, I’ll take what I can get.

Smart and smooth. I dig their House of Dragon too! They’re more straightforward than jokey so not high on comedy, but I would listen to them discuss any show.

As a screenwriter myself I always get the nuts and bolts on a story’s DNA. Simon started covering the street if Baltimore in 84. So the drug culture he saw though old by The Wires debut was still in effect. The cell phone pay phone thing was a update if beepers which were everywhere back then (I’m a 70’s baby btw). There is a big difference between the 80/90’s drug dealers and the 70’s. Just google the infamous Nikky Barnes NY Times Magazine cover. Dude is in a suit. When I was 12 the hustlers wore track suits, Polo and lots of jewelry and an endless array of sneakers. Crack completely flipped the social order. Kids for the most part we’re selling drugs. My boys were 14-15 going outta state. By 17 they were buying quarter keys of “ready rock” and tripling their profit margins. This was during the early to mid 90’s. So much of what my boys were doing was just an upgrade on what the real dealers depicted were doing in the 80’s (that would be the well known Melvin Williams). One other thing -the streets move fast. Hustling moves faster. What was cool as a freshman in high school starts to fade by the end. Like beepers. By 94 you could see they weren’t going to be around in the next 10 or so years. Smartly when the show dropped that’s what the writers went with. So you got Bernard picking up burner phones because that’s what a 19 year old in 2003 would have.
