    Leviticus: Access - Ch. 1-7

What if one of the most overlooked books in the Bible holds the key to understanding why Jesus had to die? That is exactly what we explore as we open up the book of Leviticus, a book that most of us have quietly abandoned somewhere between good intentions and the third chapter. Far from being an ancient employee handbook for priests, Leviticus is actually answering one of the most urgent questions in all of Scripture: how can an unholy people live in the presence of a holy God? We trace the story from the end of Exodus, where even Moses himself is barred from entering the tent of meeting because God's glory fills it completely, and we feel the weight of that locked door. Then Leviticus swings it open, not all the way, but enough to show us the path. The five offerings described in the opening chapters are not arbitrary rituals. They are a visceral, blood-soaked reminder of how serious sin really is and how far God's holiness stands from our own. When we picture what it meant to lay our hands on an animal, watch it die in our place, and then carry out the entire sacrificial process, we begin to feel the gravity of what we so casually call our mistakes. The word atonement, meaning to wipe off or cover, captures what these sacrifices accomplished: not a permanent removal of sin, but a temporary covering that allowed a holy God to look upon His people with grace for a season. Leviticus does not leave us in the slaughterhouse, though. It points forward, straining toward something better, something permanent, something that would not need to be repeated year after year. That something, of course, is Jesus.
