🚀 The FUTURE of SPACE (FoS) video podcast, hosted by Daniel Fox, is a candid and informal conversation between Fox and leaders, investors, innovators, educators, celebrities, movers and shakers, who are shaping the future of humankind into outer space and here on Earth. Just like how two friends would chat and philosophize together, with one thing missing, a glass of wine! 🚀 Our guest today is Dr. Beth Shapiro. Dr. Shapiro is the Chief Science Officer at Colossal Biosciences and an evolutionary biologist who specializes in the genetics of ice age animals and plants. As Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UC Santa Cruz and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, Beth uses DNA recovered from bones and other remains to study how species evolved through time and how human activities have affected and continue to affect this dynamic process. Her work focuses on organisms ranging from influenza to mammoths, asking questions about domestication, admixture, speciation, and pathogen evolution. Her current work develops techniques to recover increasingly trace amounts of DNA such as from environmental and forensic samples. A 2009 MacArthur Fellow, Dr. Shapiro is also an award-winning popular science author and communicator who uses her research as a platform to explore the potential of genomic technologies for conservation and medicine.

    FoS Soyeon Yi

🚀 The FUTURE of SPACE (FoS) video podcast, hosted by Daniel Fox, is a candid and informal conversation between Fox and leaders, investors, innovators, educators, celebrities, movers and shakers, who are shaping the future of humankind into outer space and here on Earth. Just like how two friends would chat and philosophize together, with one thing missing, a glass of wine! 🚀 Our guest today is Dr. Soyeon Yi. Dr. Yi is South Korea's first and only astronaut. In December 2006, Dr. Yi emerged victorious from a pool of over 36,000 candidates to become South Korea's first astronaut. On April 8, 2008, she embarked on an 11-day mission to the International Space Station, on the Russian Soyuz. During her groundbreaking mission, Dr. Yi conducted numerous experiments that later contributed to South Korean science textbooks and television lectures. Her return to Earth on April 19, 2008, was quite dramatic. She endured a challenging ballistic re-entry, experiencing gravitational forces of 8Gs and a very bumpy landing, 260 miles off-course in the middle of the Kazakhstan steppes. She, along with crew mate Peggy Whitson and Yuri Malenchenko found themselves being greeted by nomads, instead of the proper landing crew. Dr. Yi's career has been marked by significant contributions to both business and education. She has held multiple leadership roles and is currently an advisor to BORYUNG, a South Korean healthcare and space investment company.

Richelle is an expeditionary artist, curator, and analog astronaut. She explores life at all levels of living systems—organisms, social structures, ecosystems, and planetary systems—to illuminate the interdependence and complexity that bind them. Her work examines neural-like networks of connectivity, revealing intricate, interwoven patterns that span disciplines and scales. By visually interpreting these structural relationships, she create narratives that integrate the biological, social, and technological systems that shape our shared existence on Earth. She is the Head of Creative Research for the analog space missions Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS), Sensoria Program, Lunares Research Station, and Astroland Interplanetary Agency. Richelle is the Co-founder of Inploration, a non-profit art and space initiative to deepen community appreciation for our planet by fostering new perspectives. Her work spans exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Venice Biennale, and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum with recent artworks on the surface of the Moon and adhered to an asteroid.
