How to Raise Middle Schoolers Without Losing Your Mind

Middle school doesn’t have to be a war zone, and your kid’s big feelings don’t have to derail your life. Megan Saxelby of Wild Feelings has seen it all. From navigating her own adolescence with learning differences to helping middle schoolers (and their parents) thrive instead of just survive. She shares real stories from her classroom and coaching work that show how small shifts in mindset and language can completely change your connection with your kid. We unpack why so many of us are trapped in the “middle school is impossible” story, how behavior is really a need trying to be met, and what it looks like when you give your child autonomy, belonging, and a sense of purpose. Megan offers practical, digestible steps for parents who want to parent from calm, connection, and clarity, not stress, guilt, or perfectionism.  By the end, you’ll see how this phase can be one of the most joyful, relationship-building periods of your family life, and why approaching it strategically can leave everyone feeling capable, seen, and relieved. Key Takeaways: Belonging is crucial for adolescents' emotional well-being. Behavior is often a need trying to be met, not a personal attack. Repairing relationships after conflict is essential for healthy dynamics. Modeling silliness can encourage children to embrace playfulness. Creating a playful environment can help ease tensions at home. Recognizing the developmental needs of adolescents can improve parenting strategies. How to Learn in Alignment with How Your Brain Actually Works

Learning the “right way” isn’t about trying harder, it’s about learning smarter. Lauren Waldman, a learning scientist and self-proclaimed “learning pirate,” spent over a decade in teaching and corporate learning, but it wasn’t until she dove into the neuroscience of the brain that everything clicked. We unpack how to learn in alignment with how your brain actually works, and in a way you can put into practice immediately. Lauren reminds us that most of us were never taught how to learn, and she introduces a simple metacognition framework: What do I know? What don’t I know? And what do I think I know that might be wrong? We explore stepping into discomfort, because growth happens when your brain is challenged, and Lauren encourages treating learning like a personal experiment. She helps you drill down on why you’re learning something, which keeps your efforts strategic, intentional, and way less overwhelming in a world full of endless resources. Key Takeaways: Learning works best when you are intentional and focused, not just consuming information. Ask yourself what you know, what you don’t, and what you might think you know to guide your learning. Growth comes from leaning into discomfort, even when your brain resists. Treat learning like an experiment: try, fail, adjust, and repeat to build skill and confidence. Focus is a skill you can train with attention exercises to learn more efficiently. Knowing your “why” keeps you motivated and helps you choose what to focus on. How to Reinvent Yourself When You're Feeling Stuck

Ever feel that quiet tug that it’s time for a change, but you’re not sure where to start?  I sit down with Anzar Khaliq, a physicist turned educator and Chief Learning Officer at San Francisco Bay University, to unpack what it really means to reinvent yourself. Anzar shares the three signals that it’s time for growth and how curiosity, humility, and self-awareness can help you move toward something more aligned and fulfilling. We explore how design thinking, iteration, and divergent thinking can guide not just your work, but your whole life.  If you’ve been craving a reset or simply want to grow with more intention, this conversation will inspire you to pause, reflect, and design your next chapter with purpose. Key Takeaways: Reinvention is essential for personal growth. Listening to the world helps identify the need for change. Self-awareness is a starting point for reinvention. Understanding different life domains can aid in self-discovery. Curiosity about oneself is crucial for growth. Experimentation allows for exploration of new possibilities. Intellectual humility fosters openness to new ideas. 2026 Goal Setting Guide: How to Set Goals You’ll Actually Keep

Already set goals at the end of last year or still figuring things out now? Either way, this is your reminder that it’s not too late to do this well.  I’m sharing the three biggest things I’ve learned about goals over the years, pulled straight from the process I use myself and the goal guide I created, because the how matters just as much as the what. We start with reflection (yes, even if the year was messy), then zoom out using both structured and big-picture thinking so you can actually see what you want more of and less of in your life.  And finally, we get practical by connecting goals to the habits that make them real, because visions don’t happen without systems. If you want your goals to feel grounded, meaningful, and actually doable this year, this episode will help you reset without starting over. Key Takeaways: Don’t just set goals. Pause first and reflect on the wins, challenges, and lessons from your past year. Combine structured thinking with big-picture dreaming to see your life clearly across all areas. Your goals are only as strong as the habits and systems that support them. Small, intentional actions can create domino effects that transform multiple areas of your life. Experiment with your goals and habits. There’s no single “perfect” way, just what works for you. Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 02:17 The step most people miss that changes everything 06:04 See your life in new ways to plan better 10:15 Habits that actually make big goals possible 13:35 Experiment and create a system that sticks Resources Mentioned: Download the 2026 Goal Guide Get Fresh Blueprints for Thought Connect with Me: Instagram LinkedIn More About Building Thinkers:  I'm your host, Tracy Clark, and this is where potential becomes reality through deliberate curiosity, reflection, practice, and play. Reflections from Season Three: Crafting Better Days and Bigger Ideas

Ever feel like your days could be more intentional and full of meaning?  As we wrap up the end of 2025, I’m reflecting on the top three episodes of season three that resonated with you most and why they matter. From Bruce Stanley’s The Art of Daycrafting, we explore designing your day with autonomy and experimenting with routines to boost energy and well-being. Megan Stevenson’s How to Land a Book Deal shows how focused creativity within a “corral” can help you manage diverse interests, and my conversation with my very own podcast manager, Alexis Archuleta, in Simple Shifts that Level Up Your Podcast Game reminds us to embrace imperfection, keep creating, and find meaning in the work we put out.  I’ll also share practical tools like blueprints for thought, actionable reflections, and ways to experiment in your own life so you can craft days that truly matter, and I hope you’ll share these ideas with anyone looking to do the same. Key Takeaways: Crafting your day intentionally can boost energy, focus, and overall well-being. Embracing autonomy and questioning inherited rules can open up new ways to structure your work and life. Focused creativity allows you to explore diverse interests without losing direction. Shipping work consistently and letting go of perfectionism helps you create momentum and meaningful output. Small experiments can help you design days full of purpose. How Modern HR is Driving Business Growth and Shaping the Future of Work

If you think HR is just about hiring and firing, think again, this episode flips that whole idea on its head.  I sit down with Bobby Conley, a seasoned HR leader, to talk about the shift from traditional “old HR” to a strategic, proactive “new HR.” Bobby explains that HR transformation can take many forms, like updating processes, technology, and talent, depending on an organization’s size and maturity, often driven by leadership changes or mergers and acquisitions. He busts common misconceptions about HR being purely administrative and shows how modern HR professionals act as strategic business partners, using data to drive business performance and culture.  We dive into the future of work, exploring how AI will increase productivity, especially in talent acquisition, while HR leaders navigate bias, legal considerations, and the need to reskill employees to integrate AI effectively. Bobby also emphasizes that change, though sometimes uncomfortable, is where the most growth happens, encouraging curiosity, experimentation, and continuous learning, ultimately framing HR as both a guide through organizational transformation and a champion of human adaptability in a rapidly evolving workplace. Key Takeaways: Modern HR is a strategic partner driving performance and culture, not just administrative tasks. HR transformation varies by company size, maturity, and often follows leadership changes or mergers. AI boosts productivity, especially in talent acquisition, but HR must manage bias, legal risks, and reskill employees. Transparency and guardrails are crucial for adopting AI while keeping humans central. Data-savvy HR professionals can shape strategic decisions and support organizational goals. AI and technology augment roles, letting employees focus on higher-value work. The #1 Skill That Makes Every Idea Easier to Understand

Design isn’t just how something looks, it’s how it makes you think. I’m joined by the incredibly talented Lucie Agolini, a designer who’s all about creating visual experiences that actually make people feel something. We talk about her journey to finding her niche in user experience design, and how asking the right questions can completely change the outcome of a project. Lucie shares some of the biggest design pitfalls she sees (hello, overcomplicated Miro boards) and tells me about her passion project, an illustration library that makes good design accessible to everyone. We also get into the business side of creativity, how to think like an entrepreneur as a freelancer, and why visuals aren’t just decoration; they’re tools for learning and communicating more effectively. Key Takeaways: Visual experiences can enhance collaboration and connection. Natural talent in design can be developed through practice. Visual appeal should not overshadow the substance of design. Many people overcomplicate design due to lack of confidence. Visuals can significantly enhance the learning experience. Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 01:36 Lucie's path to finding her creative lane 05:11 What entrepreneurs can learn from visual design 08:20 Is great design born from talent or built through practice? 11:03 Why visuals matter more than you might think 13:46 When design gets too complicated 15:45 Inside Lucie’s illustration library 18:30 The business side of creativity 20:54 Finding your rhythm as a freelancer  29:38 Wrapping up Resources Mentioned: Miro: https://miro.com/   Illustration Library: https://www.lucieagolini.com/products/cnvs-illustration-library  Connect with Lucie: Website: https://www.lucieagolini.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lucieagolini/  More About Building Thinkers:  I'm your host, Tracy Clark, and this is where potential becomes reality through deliberate curiosity, reflection, practice, and play. When You’re the One Everyone Turns To… Who Helps You Grow?

Ever wonder why the best leaders are also the most self-aware? In this episode, I sit down with Dain Dunston to unpack what it really means to lead consciously. We talk about the kind of leadership that starts from the inside out, the kind that asks you to look at yourself honestly, stay open to feedback, and be willing to grow, even when it’s uncomfortable. Dain shares his own path and how it taught him the power of building a deep sense of self and helping others do the same. We dive into concepts like beginner’s mind and relational intelligence, and how those can transform the way you show up for your team and yourself. This isn’t just another leadership chat. It’s a reminder that the willingness to feel the pain of growth and stay curious is what separates good leaders from truly exceptional ones.  Key Takeaways: Conscious leadership is essential for both business and life. Feedback serves as a powerful tool for growth and learning. Vulnerability allows leaders to connect and grow. Self-awareness is crucial for effective leadership. Learning agility is necessary in a rapidly changing world. Beginner's mind fosters creativity and innovation. Self-awareness impacts not just leaders but everyone in an organization.
