Before Your Parents Need You: The Conversations Families Should Have Now

What happens when your parents start needing you in ways they never did before? In this episode of the You Are Dope Podcast, Sharif Colbert and his daughter and co-host, Taylor Colbert, sit down with Sharif’s oldest sister, Latissue “Sissy” Colbert, for an honest conversation about aging parents, caregiving, independence, family responsibility, and the conversations families often wait too long to have. After losing their father in January, Sharif and Sissy found themselves looking back at his final years from two very different perspectives. Sissy was in Alaska and became their dad’s primary caregiver as he became less mobile and needed more help. Sharif was thousands of miles away in Atlanta, trying to remain involved while decisions about their father’s care were happening from a distance. They talk openly about the questions that come with that transition: When do you step in? How do you respect an aging parent’s independence when you’re concerned about their safety? How much say should siblings have when one person is carrying most of the day-to-day responsibility? And how do you remain someone’s son or daughter when so much of the relationship has become about caregiving? Sharif also shares lessons from friends who have cared for aging parents themselves—including what they wish they had known about medical care, insurance, finances, asking for help, loneliness, planning ahead, and the reality that sometimes you simply don’t know what you don’t know until you’re living it. But this conversation isn’t only about preparing for decline. It’s also about remembering that underneath the medications, appointments, paperwork, insurance, and difficult decisions… That’s still Mom. That’s still Dad. And sometimes the most important advice is also the simplest: Make the memories. If your parents are still healthy and independent, this episode may give you a few conversations worth having before your family is forced to have them. You. Are. Dope.
